@unboundgravel week is always special here in Emporia. Some years have been wild and chaotic (I’m looking at you 2019) and some years have been super chill. This year is SUPER chill. Riding the 25 miler with Lane is refreshing. I was able to spin 55 mile on Monday, I will ride some today. Thursday and Friday I’ll enjoy the expo and help out at @tailwindnutrition expo booth. Preride of the @unboundgravel 100 mile course was so much fun. As always I fueled with @tailwindnutrition on my ride… something I’ve been doing since 2016 when it got me my first 200 mile finish. I probably ate a little bit of candy and chip too 🤷♂️ (XL training that I just can’t give up) Second 100 miler on the pathfinder pros. 700x47. So far no issues. I probably would have stuck with my double cross but needed something wider than 42 for Coast 2 Coast in June. Overall a great day on the bike. Hoping to jump on some more soon to experience other portions of the 200 mile course up north. Ughhh that was tough. Saturday I got out for one of my longest runs since my 2022 50k @gravel_worlds Not many of you know I was planning on running a 50 miler after that event but some injuries made running not so comfortable for a few months so I went full blast into cycling (which was pain free) and then signed up for the @unboundgravel XL and my focus went solely to cycling for 2023. I kept wanting to jump back into running because I love what it does for my overall fitness, but… I have yet to really do that, SO I’ve decided I’m putting a running event back on my calendar. I have a few I’m looking at, but trying to decide and make the commitment. I’m not talking about another 50k just yet, but not also another 5k. (Think half marathon distance at a minimum). Soooo any thoughts? What do you know of in that half marathon distance that would be fun? Having Mindi in town this past week was awesome. I’ve gotten to know Mindi over the years originally through IG when she told me to look for the pink helmeted rider at the 2017 LR100. We all ended up covered in mud, cold and miserable. Since then we have done 3 Doubles together at @midsouthgravel & @gravel_worlds Her and her mother have stayed at our house when they needed a last minute place during @unboundgravel We have shared many meals at different events we have been to. Sang songs for 75 miles entertaining and possibly annoying fellow riders at the 2021 Gravel Worlds. I could go on and on… the reason I share this, is because 1. I absolutely love Mindi. Windy with Mindi. 55 miles of wild wind. Seriously. Gusts were nearing 60mph. We absolutely struggled down to Madison to get @caseys pizza and a sprite. Then flew home. That was until Mindi had a massive gash in her rear tire. I tried almost all the plugs I had and we couldn’t get it to seal. So we went to tubes. Meh 😒. It worked. All is well. Then about 3 miles later I got a puncture. Thankfully mine sealed and we were rolling. Great day on the bike. #TBT to last Friday because I haven’t jumped on the bike since then. 😒. I was going to jump on Monday but the rain we got before the snow made everything a mess. Tuesday was 5 hours of shoveling snow for our house, older ladies from church and others. I was going to zwift… but I was tired. Yesterday I was gonna zwift because everything is ice… then I smashed my knee into a door frame 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️. So maybe I zwift today. I don’t like zwift but I doubt I get outside and spinning would be nice. Lots of ice still. Not really excited about our sub zero temps for the coming week. I for one an ready for summer. 2023 ends off with a bang. 117 mile ride yesterday was filled with all kinds of crazy. Wind chills was 21 in the morning. Definitely brisk, my feet don’t like that. I rode out into the headwind for the first portion of the ride. Gravel roads were solid until crossing the County line. Then it was a mess for the next 10 miles. Even descending was challenging due to the fist sized rock from edge to edge of the roads. After a refueling headed towards Madison, KS for the next 50 miles. By then my @cedaero bag was loaded with all@the goodies to snack on. Then turned home where I met Matt for bonus miles. Turned out to be a beautiful day. Not bad at all for December 30th. Well at least it wasn’t zwift. 😆😆😆. Day didn’t go as planned. We have just been a bit saturated this past month so that even the light rain caused problems. Gravel roads were on and off sloppy. Unpredictable for the most part. Jumped on some pavement. That’s when it decided to get really fox y and then start raining. Opted to head back towards town. Once I was near Emporia the rain and dog had went away so I looped around town to get to 51 miles today. Worlds collide. On Saturday two other @leapoffaithmartialarts students (Paul & Joseph) along with Master Annika participated in Emporia’s Freedom Fest. They each ran the 5k. Their cheers along with the rest of those present were awesome both before the event and at the turn from the run to ride portion & the ride to the obstacle course portion. Tonight I was presented this shirt at the end of our class. So special. Running. I don’t mind it… but I need to do it more. Overall I was pretty happy with my 5k pace yesterday considering how little time I’ve spent running recently. Right at 29 minutes. My transition onto the bike was fast. Sub 15 second from everything I could tell. Pulled off the Speedgoats tossed on the bike shoes, helmet and jacket and took off. The first this I did was start chugging about 16oz of @tailwindnutrition in the first few bike miles to refuel/fuel myself after the 5k and 42 mile ride. Awesome day to compete. Was great coming across the finish line first for both the run and ride of us spur challenge competitors. Glad to have earned my silver spur. Will I finish 4 more for a gold spur or 9 more for a Stetson? Who knows.
