La prehnita, un silicato alumínico cálcico, debe su nombre al coronel holandés Hendrik von Prehn, naturalista y coleccionista de minerales, y a quien se le atribuye su descubrimiento en el año 1774 en Cabo Buena Esperanza (Sudáfrica). En lo que respecta a su cristalización, pertenece al sistema rómbico, en cristales tabulares y prismáticos, aunque es muy habitual encontrarla como agregados cristalinos de estructura radiada (ver foto 1). La prehnita puede presentarse en color verde oliva o marrón, existiendo una variedad de color pardo-amarillenta con efecto ojo de gato. Suelen ser semitransparentes o traslúcidas. #IGELab Los tratamientos con bórax, como el que ha sido aplicado al zafiro de la fotografía, son bastante habituales en corindones. Consisten en el relleno o cicatrización de las fisuras con un vidrio o flux caliente, que disuelve el corindón de la pared de dichas fisuras al penetrar en ellas. Cuando enfría, el vidrio se solidifica, y también precipita el corindón previamente fundido, sellando la fractura 🩹 🔬 Al observar la gema al microscopio se aprecian estructuras alargadas (similares a “gusanitos”🐛), como las de la imagen, que corresponden a los residuos del vidrio. Cuando la cicatrización es apreciable en fracturas y cavidades más grandes, y cuando la cantidad empleada es significativa, se considera un tratamiento grave. En los cuarzos y, en especial, en las amatistas, son frecuentes las maclas polisintéticas según la ley de Brasil, que producen figuras características en polarizadores cruzados. Cuando se observa esta macla podemos confirmar que la piedra es natural, ya que las piedras sintéticas no dan este maclado. Just love interesting inclusions! 😍Inclusions are so valuable in gemstones giving us info on what the possible identity of a stone may be , occasionally they may even be diagnostic for the gemstone giving us the full ID . Other useful inclusions can give an idea of geological origin , treatments and sometimes geographical locations ( very important for some gemstones value). This is a fluorite gem rough I picked up recently that has these just beautiful octahedral inclusions inside with metallic lustre. Bit of research later and they are probably chalcopyrite. But soo pretty sprinkled through the stone like stars ✨ ! Question is do I risk trying to cut into a gem 💎 - tricky material to cut because if it’s cleavage! چقدر کیانیت میتونه چیزای جالبی داخلش باشه. این نوع اینکلوژنهای نارنجی قهوه ای که اتفاقی درون یکی از کیانیت ها یافتم، احتمال داره آندالوزیت یا استورولیت باشن چون میتونن همراه با کیانیت همبستر بشن. در این تصویر صفحات رخ موازی نیز مشاهده میشه. تصویر آخر نمونه از کیانیت همراه با بلورهایی از استورولیت هست. با اینحال نتونستم مشابه این نوع اینکلوژن ها تصویری در گوگل پیدا کنم. ©عکس از حسن کرمی #کیانیت #kyanite #geminclusion
The goal is not always to get the cleanest stone and sometimes not even a good performing one... Don't you agree? In this case, I got some dragon garnet rough from @east_african_gems and I wanted to send a sample to the @igegemologia, so they could have a nice reference stone. Just the rough wouldn't be useful for studying some of its properties, getting its refractive index and looking into its inclusions. A simple solution would be to cut and polish one flat facet, but that wasn't a fun thing to do. Cutting a conventional gem would waste top much material and leave some of the inclusions out... So, what should I do? I decided to follow the shape of the stone, put some facets here and there, leave some natural surfaces and keep all the inclusions. The result in the microscope is simply spectacular and the even the stone in real life was so beautiful!! Take a look at the last video and make an opinion yourself... It could even be used for jewelry, or not?
