. i picked 2lbs of fiddlehead ferns today. . i remembered that fiddleheads like to grow in swampy areas by water. i decided to hunt for them on my parents' land, with its creek and marshy area. . right before i went fiddlehead picking, i rummaged around the Rangeley Walmart, squirrel- style, (the free barn at the dump.) i found this nice pair of oboz hiking boots that fit perfectly! i wore them here. $150 shoes! i used to sell them at an outdoorsy store i worked at years ago. i really needed proper hiking boots tbh. . i picked for two hours straight. i crawled around the forest floor on my hands and knees. once i realized what the ostrich ferns looked like, i saw them everywhere!! really overwhelmed by the amount of fiddleheads growing around me. . i traveled from one clump of ferns to the next and the next... frantically picking more and more... after 2 hours, i had to find a stopping point. i lost track of time. . i forced myself to not stray too far from the path, cuz i was so focused on fiddleheads that I knew i could get turned around. everytime i stood up and moved to a different part of the woods, i made sure to check where the trail was in proximity to me and my new batch of fiddleheads.i used some internet resources to teach myself how to identify the fiddleheads, bc this was my first time hunting for them. . i was like, 'i KNOW there's fiddleheads here. i can just feel it. this is the perfect place for them to grow.' and yes, the fiddleheads were there. i was completely surrounded by thousands of fiddleheads... they were just a fifth of the size i expected . the ones i found here are way smaller than what is offered by professional forgers... the people who set up booths at farmer's markets and sell fiddleheads to restaurant kitchens. that is what confused me at first. im used to fiddleheads at a huge size, like the width of a golf ball. most of the fiddleheads i picked today were the size of a dime. 😹🙊 pretty tiny. i did find a few large ones. . #fiddleheads #fiddleheadferns #foraging #mainewoods #freshveggies #springharvest #pineforest #swamp #pickme #pickyourown #mayday #gardenofparadise #naturesbeauty #warmweather #mainemountains #greenery
