Donated by Henriette Nigrin in 1956 to the Municipality of Venice after Mariano’s passing, Palazzo Fortuny was to be “perpetually used as a center of culture in relation to art” according to the deed, “and the central hall on the first floor must retain the characteristics of what was Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo’s favorite studio, with the works, furniture and objects currently found there.” Through a long-standing sponsorship program, @fortunyvenezia and @palazzofortuny_venezia carry forward Mariano Fortuny’s legacy in the two original places where his art flourished: Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei, the original home and laboratory which today houses the namesake museum, and the factory on the Giudecca island, where the large-scale production of extraordinary printed cottons for interior furnishings began, and which continues to operate following the traditional methods. We are pleased to announce the reopening of the Brick House, the iconic modernist landmark in New Canaan, Connecticut, designed by Philip Johnson in 1949. Completed just months before the renowned Glass House, the Brick House was an integral part of the architect’s original plan for the site, offering two essential halves to a single composition. Closed to the public since 2008 due to ongoing damage from water infiltration, half of the property’s core architectural story was left untold. Until now. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of @theglasshouse_newcanaan, we partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation (@savingplaces) to replace the water-damaged fabric wall-coverings with a donation of the same fabric envisioned by Mariano Fortuny and utilized by Philip Johnson. An exclusive production of Piumette pink, aquamarine, and gold was created by our artists in Venice and is now an integral part of this historic restoration project. Ciao Venezia! For my textile followers a series of photos from the Fortuny Museum, which has been on my bucket list for some time. Sumptuous printed velvets, cottons and silks. Ever since volunteering at the NGV in the 90’s in Textiles, I have been intrigued by Fortuny’s invention of the finely pleated silks for the ‘Delphos’ and ‘Peplos’ dresses. I loved his idea of attaching Murano glass beads to the sides of the dress to weight it so it fell perfectly on the body. In 2023, @theglasshouse_newcanaan embarked on the restoration of the Brick House, the architectural counterpoint of Philip Johnson’s renowned American mid-century icon, The Glass House. In anticipation of the unveiling of @fortunyvenezia’s contribution of producing the fabrics of the walls and panels as they originally were in the bedroom of this extraordinary 1949 building, we are sharing some archival images of this architectural landmark. Discussing the concept behind his design of the Brick House and his choice of Fortuny fabric to upholster all the walls, Philip Johnson said, “I learned from Sir John Soane the wonderful thing of lighting coming in from around a curved surface to make you cuddle. This was a bedroom, why not get cuddly? Lighting can be challenging. To find the right fixture for the dining room in this 1920s Gothic Tudor home meant designing a custom lamp.
