We're back after a relaxing 4 day weekend off! πŸ™ŒπŸ½ Big thanks to everyone who gave us the flexibility to take care of Grace last week while she wasn't feeling well. The meds are helping a ton & she is definitely enjoying her home cooked, limited ingredient diet. Our girl is almost back to her usual, wild self ❀️ #upbaywalksandwags #dogwalkerlife #housesittingadventures #boardingdogs #daycaredogs #walkwithafriend #hikewithdogs #dogsitter #dogprofessional #professionaldogwalker #dogsofvallejo #dogsofbenicia #dogsofinstagram #dogstagram #doglovers #dogfriends #rewardsbasedtraining #forcefreedogwalking #bayareapets #bayareadogs #vallejo #benicia #muttsofinstagram #muttstagram #herdingdogsofinstagram

Everyone say Hi to our newest friend, Mr. Winkles! 🐾 He's a young, tiny pup in a big, big world so we're slowly working towards being able to come in to walk him solo or with a group. So far, he's been doing great, and even came over to meet our crew last week. He loves his dog pals, and I'm sure we'll be good pals in no time, too πŸ₯° #upbaywalksandwags #dogwalkerlife #housesittingadventures #boardingdogs #daycaredogs #walkwithafriend #hikewithdogs #dogsitter #dogprofessional #professionaldogwalker #dogsofvallejo #dogsofbenicia #dogsofinstagram #dogstagram #doglovers #dogfriends #rewardsbasedtraining #forcefreedogwalking #bayareapets #bayareadogs #vallejo #benicia #muttsofinstagram #muttstagram #littledogs #chihuahuasofinstagram #dachshundsofinstagram #rescuedogsofinstagram

For human adults, learning a new skill and mastering it can span from several days to several years! Yet, dogs, who have cognitive abilities comparable to those of a 2-2.5-year-old, are often expected to grasp new skills after just a few attempts. πŸ‘ΆπŸΆ Regrettably, we frequently fail to adequately prepare our dogs for challenging situations they encounter. We must challenge the misconception that pet dogs can effortlessly β€œdeal with it” and the belief that undesired behaviors will pass if the dog is consistently exposed to those situations. Unfortunately, this approach rarely works and often makes the behaviours worse instead. If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, even if it’s something that is more inconvenient that worrisome, it’s better to seek assistance from a qualified professional sooner rather than later. ⏳ This allows both you and your dog to acquire new skills in a less stressful settings and fosters a more positive relationship. Remember, the more a dog practices a behavior, the more likely they are to repeat it, so the β€œwait and see” approach is seldom beneficial. Comment below which area you would like to improve on with your dog and I can give you a couple of suggestions ⬇️

Don’t get me wrong, slip leads have their uses. That said, based on canine physiology and our growing understanding of how dogs learn, I have no reason to believe they are necessary in training. As I delved into research for this post, I was taken aback by the sheer volume of misleading claims circulating online. The most common was the claim that slip leads, when used correctly, are gentle and comfortable for dogs. However, this overlooks the inherent discomfort associated with aversive training methods, which rely on positive punishment and negative reinforcement to change behavior. I was also incredibly concerned that a well known company selling equipment for dogs stated on their website that placing a slip lead high up on a dog’s neck β€œmimics the natural way dogs communicate with each other”. I’ve spent a lot of time learning about canine body language and have found no evidence supporting the idea that dogs would use a noose to teach one another to walk to heel. When dogs communicate with each other, it’s mainly through what they see (body language), hear (vocalisations), and smell (olfactory cues). Touch, as a form of communication, is typically brief and part of social interactions, rarely intended to cause discomfort as it may escalate into conflict, which is not in any dog’s best interest. It’s well-documented that dogs understand we’re not fellow canines, so there’s no need for us to imitate their communication methods. Attempting to mimic canine communication is likely to lead to confusion rather than clarity. The conflicting advice doesn’t end there. Websites endorsing slip leads offer contradictory information on their suitability for different breeds, ages, and training purposes. This inconsistency not only confuses pet owner, but raises doubts about the credibility of those promoting these tools. In conclusion, it’s crucial for dog owners to approach the use of slip leads with caution and skepticism. By prioritising evidence-based practices and the welfare of our pets, we can ensure a more transparent and ethical approach to dog training. What are your thoughts? Comment below ⬇️

Welcome Juno to Rhody Paws! 🐾 Juno is a 2 year old mixed breed who needs some help with her leash skills. In addition to pulling, she can be reactive when she sees other dogs out on a walk. We spent her first session teaching her it’s worth her while to follow her mom! 🌟Trainer tip: walking backwards (or backpedaling) can be a fun way to engage your dog out on leash! β˜€οΈ #dogtraining #forcefreedogwalking #clickertraining #rescuedog #rescuedogsofinstagram

I was so delighted to meet fuzzy Gyoza for some in-home training on the weekend! Gyoza's guardians are working through some demand barking, puppy mouthing and food thievery at the moment. They've got some fantastic training foundations in place after completing puppy classes, but brought us in for some tailored help to continue building good habits with their pup. We went through some ways to refine their communication with Gyoza, as well as some strategic enrichment and management - all to keep their pup's behaviour on the right track! Bonus thanks to Gyoza for reminding us that he's still teething - and for making us laugh - by dropping a molar on the floor, pausing, then causally bending down to eat it. Too funny. . . . . . #happydogs #melbournedogs #goldenretriever #goldenretriverpuppy #puppy #puppytraining #doglover #dogwalkersofinstagram #dogwalkingmelbourne #forcefreedogwalking #rewardsbasedtraining #itsallaboutthetreats #dogtrainersofmelbourne #dogwalkerlife #dogwalker #forcefreedogwalker #melbournedogwalker #happydog #dogsofmelbourne #dogtrainersofinstagram #forcefreedogtraining #welfarefirsttrainer #dogsofinstagram #dogstagram #hellopup #forcefreedogtrainersofmelbourne #thefutureisforcefree #positivereinforcementtraining #positivereinforcementdogtrainer

There are so many different ways to train dogs but which is best? So much has changed in the dog training world in recent years as our understanding of behaviour and learning has improved. However, since dog training is not a regulated industry, many professional trainers have chosen to stay in their comfort zone and continue to train with methods that are no longer recommended due to welfare concerns. Such trainers sharing their opinions as if it is fact spreads misinformation to unsuspecting members of the public making it difficult to know what the right choice is and putting dogs and their owners at risk. Despite what you may have read, heard or been told aversive tools DO rely on discomfort or pain to modify behavior. If they weren’t uncomfortable, they simply wouldn’t work. The scientific consensus is clear, so much so that veterinary organisations including American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB), The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA),The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA), have released position statements advocating for the use of humane training techniques and opposing the use of e-collars and other punitive methods. It is never too late to learn a new, kinder way to teach that not only yields long-term results but also fosters a stronger bond between you and your canine companion. What is the most unusual thing you have heard justifying the use of aversive methods? Comment below ⬇️

Exciting News! πŸ’₯ I have officially passed the assessment and have been approved for membership with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT)! In an industry that is unregulated, I believe it is vital that members of the public can connect with professionals who have undergone strict external assessments and can demonstrate they have the necessary skills to teach dog training. APDT supplies and promotes progressive, science and evidence-based training methods for the benefit of dogs, their owners, veterinary practices, rehoming centres and other organisations. As part of my APDT membership, I have to ensure I complete my education up to date and adhere to a Code of Practice so you can be certain you and your dog are in safe hands. Ready to enhance your bond with your furry friend? Book your dog training sessions with me today and stay tuned for some exciting updates coming soon! 🐾
