Female Space Marines Recently @alessandraplays40k has been making some superb Female Space Marines, and Adeptus Custodes, and has been encouraging other hobbyists to share their own as part of #femalespacemarineshowcase so here are three of my Female Imperial Fists, from My Rogue Trader style Horus Heresy army. I know that Female Marines is a topic of some contention within the hobby with certain very vocal people raging anytime someone suggests the idea. Personally, I've never seen the problem with having Female Space Marines. The Canon of Warhammer 40000 has changed constantly and even contradicted itself at times, dating all the way back to the Rogue Trader era, and retcons have been common throughout the history of the game. One of my first exposures to Warhammer 40,000 was a piece of short fiction that my Dad wrote back in the late 80s on a typewriter, which featured an Ultramarine protagonist who was a Female Lieutenant. Sadly, those few sheets of A4 with the unfinished story on are likely lost to time now (though if I ever find them, you bet I'm posting them). However as my first exposure to 40k (I'd only played Heroquest and LotRSBG at the time) it completely normalised the idea of Female Space Marines in my young brain, so when I delved properly into the lore later on, I was more surprised to learn that Marines were all male, at least canonically... Meet Ciara, Tribune and Kataphraktoi Prefect. In this picture, infiltrating the Deathwatch as a blackshield in archaic pattern power armour. As a Custodes she would likely tower over her firstborn companions, to that end I utilised some primaris legs I carved into. A very old character of mine - from when I first came back to the hobby after 15 years away - A female Custodes from at the latest, 2018. (This particular picture from Feb 2019) female Custodes are not new - many of us have embraced them as long as Custodes were an army. Notably, this is in the form of a Female Space Marine, and that’s a complicated story that I likely won’t tell anymore. Her Custodes form never got made, due to the end of that same complicated story (and this is partly why this model and paintjob was never finished or repaired. Custodes Kitbashing! I already have an old grumpy dude with axe. So I'm making an old grumpy lady with an axe. No official GW heads work the scale, though, so I used some from @statuesqueminiatures from a few years ago. They are now available as stls. (Shoutout to @holyfireman for pointing them out!) I took a standard marine head with the neck brace. Then I drilled out the face and skull, leaving an empty armored collar. The female head was dropped into the recess, thus making a Female Custodian Captain with a proper power armor collar... and robot eyes! Robot eyes make everything cooler. Squad Sergeant Agrippa of the Crimson Fists. A lightly kitbashed RTB01 Imperial Space Marine for the Paint it Blue ‘24 painting challenge in support of UK Mental Health Awareness week. I’ve fancied trying my hand at a female space marine since watching @arbitorian ‘s video on the subject. I recognise that this is a particularly touchy subject at this time; however, Rogue Trader is my thing, not the current lore. I’ve always seen RT as a sandbox in which you can do what you want. I love the frontier feel. An empire in retreat, humanity scratching out a living and searching for riches at the boundaries of known space. Set upon by raiders, pirates and xenos. In my universe the Space Marines will happily recruit on merit. Show the correct levels of grit, merciless aggression and unflinching delivery of violence then you’re in! As many implants and psychotic drugs as needed to get the job done. This is the beauty of our hobby. You can shape it how you wish, limited only by your imagination. WARHAMMER IS A LIBERAL FANTASY Okay so here's one thing that the whole"anti-woke" crowd doesn't understand. LACK OF FEMALE SPACE MARINES HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICAL VIEWS OF DESIGNERS. In fact Warhammer doesn't even acknowledge the basic scientific fact that men are on average significantly stronger than women with same level of training. Like it views gender roles as purely socially constructed. Many armies have no women or few women but it has nothing to do with differences of physical capabilities. Similarly Space Marines are all male basing on biological compatiblity, not on differences in physical capability. Another thing that Wh40k was also more liberal with gender roles than reality. So since gamesworkshop has confirmed female custodes, there has been many posts/topics for yay or nay for them and to be honest i'm for it. Because it opens up for more lore, novels, models, armies, factions/subfactions, etc. And to be honest i long wonderd why they didn't do it sooner since you already had the sisters of battle faction. In any case i hope they will push this more true and eventually bring more out like this but for like the other armies where it could be implemented for or a full new army with a primearch ... wishfull thinking i know. In truth, the chapter is led in all practical matters by its acting lieutenants, for Durgana herself succumbed to the madness of the Black Rage millenia ago, imprisoned in bejeweled finery and golden chains within the throne room of the Sin Eaters' battlecruiser nearly since the chapter's founding. Acting as a figure of worship and living relic in the most literal sense, chapter librarians scribble her every utterance for insights into her constant visions of their holy primarch. She is made all the more terrifying for her rare moments of prophesized lucidity, orchestrating the thousands of Sanguinius' adopted maniacs in a grand, shared delusions of apocalyptic doom. . So I recently realised that GW changed Custodes exactly when the Siege of Terra series has ended. And it got me thinking that it may be signifying a new era. Like the novels were a big part of why lore about Imperium needed to stay somewhat consistent. But now that it's over, a financial incentive to keep continuity has disappeared. But even so, but how important Black Library it really is? Like looking at goodreads ratings, the readership peaked at Horus Rising with 27k ratings and then it all went downhill with Legion being last novel with 10k+ ratings, Know no Fear being the last one with 5k+ ratings and first Siege of Terra and Dark Imperium books having 10x less ratings than Horus Rising and further books in these series also having less ratings. This sugests that Black Library is much less important to GW than it used to be at start of Horus Heresy era. As I mentioned before, GW design studio is now faceless corporate entity and the old guard of designers that came from historical wargame or outright history and archeology background is gone. They were the counterbalance to the low brow aspects of Wh40k like commercial decisions to sell more toys and Bolter slop. Now they are gone. I think that what they are going to do is dumbing-down the lore and reducing 40k to Bolter slop and selling toys. After reboot, GW can attract new fans with animations like Astartes but leading them to dumbed down setting and game and Warhammer+ and Marvel Wh40k comics Without deep lore, development will become much easier and they will have it easier to push shitty episodic content and it will be easier to use abusive sales tactics against their new dumbed-down audience. Of course all under guise of "progress". Lore fans aren't important to GW, what they really want is people that will compulsively buy piles of boxes of miniatures that they won't even paint. Basically, Wh40k will become like these shitty superhero comics and old fans will be reviled as somehow backwards. So, it has begun. The vibe shift at Games Workshop. Most of the old guard of designers is gone, John Blanche is gone, game books don't even have credits anymore. They are written by faceless corporation. So, obviously female Custodes are the first step on the road to female Space Marines. But why now? As I have said, the old guard, people who cared about the seting are gone. I think there's a new direction. Old fandom that the game has accumulated is scholarly, intellectual. Learning lore, reading novels, debating about the setting. Hard to please. GW has to put in effort to remain consistent. But then they have another option. Like think how many people got in through Dawn of War and the Astartes animation. Now they can just make an animation showing "TEH AWSUM!!!" visceral action and get new customers. It's about a shift from intellectual to visceral. It's about geting the lore out of the way and identifying with TEH AWSUM Space Marines. Of course it also means lowest pandering like female Space Marines. Getting girls to identify with TEH AWSUM and turning Wh40k into more anti-intellectual superhero slop. It's nothing new - the same happened when Bethesda took over Fallout. And even earlier with Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel who didn't give a damn about the lore. So yeah, I saw a video of Arch talking with some outsiders about the female Custodes drama and it was just so cringe. Like he started with explaininng that Wh40k is about painting miniatures... Black Library and hundreds of 40k novels including the bestseller Horus Heresy series? What is it? Like "it's just a game" is the argument of those who want to wreck the continuity of the setting and the lore for their selfish wants and he's playing right into it. Let's remember that reading novels is the most accessible way of being a 40k fan, especially if there's a well stocked library nearby. Then he went off the deep end and started talking some right wing conspiracy theories. wtf? He also has shown ignorance of basic facts about history of the seting and people who worked on it - people like John Blanche, Rick Priestley, Andy Chambers, Jervis Johnson, etc. who happen to no longer work in GW which is now an anonymous faceless corporation. Ultimately it's not abought right wing vs left wing. It's about being pro-social and respecting and centering the setting and the lore which is common good of the community vs narcissitic "me! me! me! me!" Like wanting female marines is all about putting one's ego and wants above the lore, there's no real left wing politics in it, it's pure narcissism. If there's a political goal in it, it is to push a narcissitic girlboss ideology that will naturally align iself with far right social Darwinism of the elites. Dont forget Games Workshop execs are trying to sell the IP to Bob Iger and Disney for a fat payout since they know the traditional business model of tabletop wargaming is significantly going to die due to increased global costs and home 3d printing etc. That's why warhammer + was created and the push to change the business focus away from niche tabletop gaming to mass market consumable product through video games, plushies, action figures and TV shows.
