By the time the host pulled back the curtain and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis Presley!”, the screams were so loud that no one could hear anything. "I was screaming so hard I couldn't hear a word he was singing," Bainbridge says. “I will never forget the way he dressed, the way he held the microphone, the way he moved on stage.” “He was different, he was original and, damn, he was the coolest,” Elvis fans remember. Elvis took the stage at 9:30 o’clock, wearing a fox-hunt scarlet coat and black pants. Several hundred girls, apparently ranging in age from 12 to 17 for the most part, left their seats and made the big rush forward. There were a few teen-age boys in the crowd which barged up to be within almost touching distance, but it was the girls who touched off the sustained pandemonium that followed. One girl got through before Elvis had twanged his first note on the guitar. Sobbing and shrieking she was led off the stage by a patrolman. Then Elvis went into his act. The noise hit a higher pitch. His gyrations got looser and faster. Elvis performed at the Fox Theater, greeted the winners of the Detroit Times competition backstage, wandered around the city, shot at a shooting range, talked to reporters and, of course, enjoyed the attention of girls at an adult party. Take the room at Graceland that's come to be known as the Jungle Room. The furniture in there is massive, trimmed in wood and covered with a fuzzy, fake fur fabric. It's not your typical down-South type sofa and chair. Why did Elvis choose that to anchor his decorating scheme for this room? Because of something Vernon had said. The day before Elvis bought the furniture for the Jungle Room, Vernon and his fiancee, Sandy, had been in a furniture store in Whitehaven. Vernon had seen some furniture he really didn't like and wondered out loud to Sandy who would buy furniture that ugly. The next morning, he found out. When he got to Graceland, the delivery truck was outside and the men were removing one of the windows from the den so that they could get the furniture inside. It was too big to go in any other way. Vernon called Sandy and said, "Now I know who would buy that furniture." Then he called Elvis on the intercom. "There are a bunch of guys down here trying to decide where to put this furniture. You want to come down and tell them where you want it?" Nash, sitting in the kitchen, said you could hear Elvis' laugh all over Graceland. Though Elvis bought the furniture there as a joke, the "Jungle Room" became one of Elvis' favorite places, because Lisa Marie liked it when she was a small child. She found that the oversized chair was a perfect place for her to curl up for a nap. One night when Elvis walked off stage after taking about five or six encore, Gladys got him by the arm and led him over to the side of the stage away from everyone and said, 'Elvis, don't you have any drawers?' He said, 'No ma'am, the only pair I own was dirty and Maxine wouldn't wash 'em. I thought I would die laughing. But I had to keep it to myself because there was no way I could ever let Gladys know that her little boy didn't like to wear 'drawers', especially on stage. Hell, he knew what he was doing! Gladys would always remind me to please take good care of her son while we were out on the road. But Lord hace mercy, who was gonna watch over me while I was watching over him? Elvis began to spend a lot of time at our house in Pine Bluff after our shows rather than make the drive on to Memphis. Since our house was small, Norma would give Elvis her bed and sleep on the couch. Funny thing, though, Norma's bed was in the same bedroom with Momma and Daddy. But Elvis loved sleeping in the same room with them. He said he had grown up that way and liked the security of a mom and dad nearby. Momma told us that Elvis was a troubled sleeper and had 'the nervous leg'. The proof of that was the way he ripped up Momma's sheets with his toes. He'd start a small hole and keep wiggling his foot in it in his sleep. By morning, he'd have that sheet almost in shreds. But Momma didn't seem to mind. She'd tell him she needed some new sheets anyway because everything she had was 'hole-y'. Elvis couldn't sleep much at night no matter where he was. He never slept over three or four hours at a time at our house or in the motels where we stayed. Gladys always told us that he couldn't sleep at home either. I think the best sleep he ever got was in the back seat of the car while we were traveling from show to show. But even then he didn't sleep much. Maxine Brown Recalls elvispresleymusic.com.au
