Chhabi Chitrakar from Biridokan, Keshabbar is one of them elderly potuas, who are still involved in making bird faced Jo dolls of Midnapore, out of humble clay.. being more or less a regular visitor to her, sometimes I do demand her to finish few half-done dolls (the models absent in own collection) in the evenings, when her spects stays nowhere near to be found.. and, she never disappoints (alongwith regular complain of "you always arrive in a hurry").. as sidenote, this same cycle continues every time.. 😋 some of her dolls bring out some wonderful "pouranik" stories and characters from ancient Hindu scriptures, and I really sometimes wonder, what if I started collecting their dolls from five more years back! Introducing, lost wooden dolls of Durmut and two of their ace-of-their-time creators - Mr. Haradhan Sutradhar on left and Mr. Hem Sutradhar on right.. It was an uphill task to reach them, coz there was no prior documentation on wooden dolls of Durmut.. to my utter surprise, met famous chhou dancer Taraknath Sutradhar all on a sudden, at the same spot while talking to artisans, Durmut being his own in-laws place.. If someone have any interest in wooden dolls of Bengal, he/she ought to know the name of nutangram.. nutangram have become the synonym of wooden dolls of Bengal, in due course of time.. Maestro Brindaban Sutradhar lives at a corner of the village in his humblest dwelling, amidst concrete ceilings.. quite naturally I bonded with him over years, "avoiding" other artisans from same village, solely because of his simplicity.. few months back, one of my artist seniors @anirbanmitrapainting and I found out images of some old works from nutangram, and gave him printouts to recreate the same, for us.. and it was fireworks in front of my eyes, yesterday! After giving finishing touches to the "Krishno-Kali", a six handed Devi Kalika with touches of Lord Krishna in posture - entirely in nutangram style, I can say nothing more than "this person breathes his craft".. added, if you see closely, few bygone shapes of nutangram's wooden owls are present too, in the background.. I will post another picture of two of his creations, later, which were gone extinct from the history of nutangram, because those were not commercially reasonable (read, effort vs revenue ratio).. if you can give creative freedom to artisans, and can provide a fair price for their effort and time, do expect nothing but masterpieces! A very energetic person, and he invests his majority of time on intricate repairworks on wooden chariots of lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra - across his base.. he made these signature wooden dolls after roughly 7-8 years of halt, and there is no inconsistency visible, to be brutally honest! Wooden dolls are one such handicraft of West Bengal that you will find across the state, piled up in baskets for sale, looking vibrant & beautiful! Natungram is a small village of Bardhaman district in West Bengal and is the craft hub for wooden doll making. There are around 51 families living in this area that are involved in doll making craft and it is their primary livelihood. This is a family run craft in which men are skilled in wood carving and women do the painting. The doll makers have their last name as either, ‘Bhaskar’, meaning sculptor or ‘Sutradhar’, meaning story teller. The most popular doll figures are either the Indian Bride, King & Queen, Gaur-Nitai, Shiva, Kali or Durga. Owlets, however are the most popular dolls in the making, with its origin rooted in religion. There are many old families in Bengal who still worship a pair of painted wooden owls to seek the blessings of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. They are believed to represent the pair of owlets, according to mythology, who had helped a poor mother and son earn fortunes by recommending them to the goddess of wealth. Despite being poor, the little boy never failed to share his food with the birds, which later stood him in good stead. The craftsmen are now incorporating these dolls into different products, like, furniture, small stools & laptop tables.
