Magome Juku stands out as a distinctive post town in Japan due to its location on steep and challenging terrain. It is said that the name Magome (written with "horse" and "basket") derives from the fact that travelers were forced to leave their horses at the inns because the road was too steep for horses to climb. After the decline of the Kamakura government in the 14th century and the establishment of its successor, the Muromachi government in Kyoto, Kamakura remained the political center of eastern Japan for some time before losing its position to other cities. Today, Kamakura is a small city and a very popular tourist destination. Today, Sekigahara is a quiet country town nestled in the narrow valley that lent itself so well to military tactics. Furukawa is located only about a 15 minute train ride north of the city of Takayama. Furukawa is smaller and calmer than Takayama. Like Takayama, the town gained wealth and fame through the high quality timber found in the region and the high level craftsmanship skills of the local carpenters. Furukawa has a nicely preserved old town and a famous festival. At Suiten-gu Shrine, visitors pray to the God of Water and Easy Childbirth. Just outside Kurume City is Daihonzan Naritasan Kurume Temple 's main feature is a 62-meter statue of the Mother Kannon, the bodhisattva of mercy, which can be seen from afar and is a useful landmark on the train ride from Fukuoka to Kurume. Inside the statue is a spiral staircase which allows you to climb to the top. Windows open to provide a view across southern Fukuoka Prefecture. Kora Taisha Shrine is a prestigious, and the largest shrine in the region as the first shrine in Chikugo. It is an Engishiki-nai Myojin Taisha (a shrine dedicated to specific gods under the Engishiki Code), and one of the former second-ranked, larger shrines. Its dedicated god, Kora Tamatare no Mikoto, is said to have been bestowed the highest rank by the Imperial Court. The waterway which flows by the main street is filled with lively carps, which add color and vibrance to the picturesque surroundings. It's a great place to visit offering the historical allure of Kyoto in a tranquil countryside setting. Visit Ozu Castle, which overlooks the sweeping Hiji River. Its interior is just as beautiful as the exterior; the cypress beams emanate a rich, woody scent. You can learn about the history of Ozu and see armor of the feudal lords up close. Pokopen Yokocho, a retro market, and museum, is located just a few minutes away. On select Sundays the outside street comes alive with vendors selling food and games. On a regular day, it's still well worth visiting the museum crammed to the rafters with Showa period (1926-1989) memorabilia. Then take a walk through the charming streets of the old town area to Garyu Sanso. Stroll through the perfectly landscaped moss covered gardens, towards the famous Garyu Sanso Villa . The island's highest peak, Mount Misen, was worshiped by local people as early as the 6th century. The centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine is the source of both the island's fame and its name. Formally named Itsukushima, the island is more popularly known as "Miyajima", literally "shrine island" in Japanese. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. Oshino Hakkai, or the Eight Seas of Oshino, a set of eight ponds located less than 1 hour away from Kawaguchiko Station, on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several centuries ago. The eight ponds are fed by snowmelt from the slopes of Mount Fuji that filters down the mountain through porous layers of volcanic rock over a period of several decades. Among other beautiful locations in this amazing itinerary. Along the 3.5 kilometer long course, you will pass more than a dozen common temples and shrines, the ruins of Takayama's former castle and ordinary scenes of a rural Japanese town. The district of Sanmachi Suji is a group of three main streets at the heart of Takayama city, recognized as a Historically Significant Traditional Building Preservation Area. About 1350 years ago, the 7th century Emperor Tenji (668–671) moved the imperial capital from Kyoto to Otsu. Sakamoto flourished as the temple town for Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, including the homes for monks from approximately 50 different temples, and the townscape retains the elegance of that history even today.
