For those who follow the Brisbane theatre scene with a passion the mere mention of the cast & crew associated with this current AD ASTRA production of "MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG" already has tickets selling like hotcakes. In fact, some performances are already "sold out" - and for very good reason - this show is absolutely fantastic! For starters, it's a Stephen Sondheim composition so you're already half way there to a great night out, but it's that stellar cast, the musicians, and the behind the scenes creative team which catapults this musical to stratospherically high levels of enjoyment and appreciation. STEPHEN HIRST (pictured here) plays Franklin Shepard who is one half of a Broadway musical writing team completed by Charley Kringas played exceptionally well by ALEX WATSON. This show cleverly unpacks, over a couple of decades, the course of events which finally result in the collapse of their working partnership. What we all need to do now is encourage our family and friends to see this show. The mere act of sitting in such a compact venue seeing these incredibly talented artists will surely have to translate to a wider fan base for them and increased ticket sales at subsequent events. Once seen (and heard), NEVER FORGOTTEN. That's how I feel about TALLIS TUTUNOA. She won me over with the timbre of her voice the first time I saw her perform back in September 2021 when she sang at "Broadway In The Dock" for Josh Daveta. She delivers a standout performance in the poignant “Leave Luanne” masterfully spinning the tale of a faithful yet scorned wife. The soundtrack is dynamic and, at times confronting, and the performances are all so strong that it's impossible not to be impressed by this 'not to be missed' production. It's called BROADWAY BINGO and also features Hayden Rodgers, Marcia Penman and Oliver Samson. The concept is simple yet brilliant. The songs performed are drawn at random from a large bingo cage and each person on stage is allowed a 'controlling aspect' (such as dictating the style of a song by a fellow cast member) for one song only. Audience members can use their smartphones to access a digital Bingo card and cross off squares when certain criteria are met during the show (such as when someone on stage walks backwards). The first 3 people to fill a line of 5 squares win a prize. Hannah gets plenty of opportunity to thrill us with her singing in solo, duet and group situations and you're certain to enjoy her very talented friends too. No Easter Bunny for me this year but thanks to Sue Mears who 'gifted' me her ticket to see PETER GARRETT at The Tivoli on Saturday night I would say I got a more than acceptable Easter Egg substitute. Peter Garrett & The Alter Egos played a stack of songs from Peter's second solo album “The True North” as well as some lightweight versions of some Midnight Oil favourites. The Alter Egos band also featured Midnight Oil’s Martin Rotsey on guitar plus backing vocals from two of Peter's daughters - May and Grace Garrett. It was on Valentine's Day in 2015 that DASH KRUCK presented his cabaret show "I Might Take My Shirt Off" on the Turbine Platform at the Brisbane Powerhouse. This photo is from that event. Well, I don't think there is any doubt that the MOUNTAIN GOAT VALLEY CRAWL was a huge success again this year. Fortitude Valley was absolutely buzzing last night with music fans packing into the 8 participating venues presenting a total of 40 bands across them during the course of the evening. Gold Coast band PEACH FUR was the 'must-see' act for me and I just love that they are getting slicker every time I catch one of their shows. Kurt Phelan, Sean Andrews, Stephen Hirst, Alexander Woodward and Tim Carroll with Dominic Woodhead (piano) in an intimate cabaret with music from one of the greatest musical theatre composers and lyricists of all time, STEPHEN SONDHEIM. January 10, back in 1986, was the night I took this photo of KATHY KENYON when local band ON EDGE supported PAUL KELLY & THE COLOURED GIRLS and DO RE MI at Easts Leagues Club, Coorparoo. How fabulous was ALEXIS BEEBE as Judge Popper in the recent season of "THE HISTORY OF THE DEVIL" at Metro Arts. Her portrayal of the quirky trial judge was quirky, animated and often quite humourous. Oh my gosh there is so much happening on the stages of Brisbane this weekend. One show that I can highly recommend is the comedy/drama WRITER'S BLOCK at PIP Theatre in Brisbane. Pictured here is KELLIE SILVER who is in the play, but is also the writer of this great piece of entertainment. As predicted by the title the story centres on Jane, an author, who is stuck for ideas on how to progress the plot of her next novel in which a hunky soldier character finds himself having feelings for a young German girl during World War II. Your last chance to see it is tomorrow (Dec 16) at 5.30pm. There are some great 'laugh-out-loud' moments in the play and you'll very quickly become engrossed in the story. Here's a thought, why not book tickets to stay on afterwards to see Adam Bartlett in LIFE IS A GAYBARET, followed by BRISBARET (a curated variety night bringing you a smorgasbord of local talent) hosted by Sophie Banister & Thien Pham. Most writers have a technique for helping them to establish a plot and the actions of the characters in their novels. In the delightful comedy WRITER'S BLOCK our author, Jane can actually see and talk to her characters. But, as the title suggests, she's struggling with inspiration for how to progress the storyline of her latest romance/war drama and her characters start to offer their thoughts and constructive critiscisms. Jane's story is centred on a German girl and British soldier sheltering in a shack during a World War 2 bombing raid and includes all the romance and drama lacking in her own life. RORY IMPELLIZZERI and LUCY BANCROFT, both pictured here, play the characters in Jane's novel superbly. Written by Australian playwright/novelist Kellie Silver, and directed by Lachlan Driscoll it's an easily enjoyable 60 minutes in the theatre that's sure to take your mind off the worries of the world and give you some new oxygen to breathe. Brisbane-bred rap queen, KAYLAH TRUTH gave a great performance on the CLANCESTRY stage on Sunday night. The others on the bill were Emily Wurramara, Cloe Terare and Barkaa. Kaylah comes from a long line of women who have something to say and who speak up about injustice. She intends to carry on that tradition through her music. During her set Kaylah won over the kids in the audience, and their parents. Always a pleasure to see on stage in any setting this is JAMES LEES on stage with ISIS in acoustic mode at Stranded Bar in Fortitude Valley last night. Along with Lucinda Shaw, Toni Lawson, Ruth Gardner and Karl O'Shea they kicked the nights' entertainment off in fine fashion and were later followed by Tim Steward, The Double Happiness and The Dream Poppies. I think it's more than fair to say that the extent of their talent was not lost on the sold-out crowd. Oh, what a joy it was to see AURELIE ROQUE exercising her vocal chords in the most exciting way during the BROADWAY IN THE DOCK extravaganza last night at BackDock Arts in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley. JOSH DAVETA and JDProCo have truly excelled themselves with this show and are to be commended for bringing top quality artists to the cabaret stage for devotees to enjoy. P.S. I love the expression of "Wow" on the face of NYKITA O'KEEFE. Talk about a picture being worth a thousand words. Well I don't know about the rest of you, but I've invested my 2023 BRISBANE FESTIVAL money in a ticket to see "I LEFT MY HEART IN HIGHGATE HILL" this Sunday afternoon. Today (Aug 29, 2023) is 20 years since Brisbane's music venue FESTIVAL HALL was officially closed, so I thought I'd share this photo that I took there 50 years ago. It's none other than my childhood idol, the world famous pianist LIBERACE. The photo you see here is not the first picture I took at this concert. I was actually sitting so far back that my hero was little more than a speck in the first photo I took from my seat. Clearly the man was incredibly special to me because in this room of 4000 people I mustered the courage to leave my seat in the 'nose-bleed' section of the side bleachers and make my way closer to the stage. The next pic was taken on the stalls floor still a reasonable distance from the stage. Two images after that show how I edged closer and closer, and this one here proves just how close I got to him in the end. The camera I was using was most likely a Kodak Instamatic with a fixed lens (no zoom or focus features), and I would have had to wind the film on before taking each shot. However, I still managed to get 3 photos of him that were this close and I would have even been able to touch his hand too, if some other woman hadn't pushed her hand in front of mine at the crucial moment. BETTE MIDLER at Festival Hall (Brisbane) in 1978 was without doubt one of the best concerts I have EVER seen. The mere fact that I am STILL GUSHING about it 45 years later is a resounding testament to my claim. I can't begin to tell you how amazing that night was, but it was one of those shows that those who weren't even born then should be kicking themselves that they missed it. I had a front row seat. Tickets were just $12.00. I know I have a better, clearer copy of this photo somewhere but this will have to do for now. I might be a little disappointed with the quality of my most recent photo of GARRET LYON but I'm never disappointed with his performances. His voice is incredible, and so easy to listen to. I'm so pleased that I was one of the fortunate ones to see him at BackDock Arts on Friday night in the SO MILLENNIAL concert staged by JDProCo. The show featured a playlist of songs which were hits in the 2000's and included Garret singing "Leave (Get Out)", the song he auditioned with this year on THE VOICE. Those who saw the broadcast will recall Jessica Mauboy also singing it with him as a duet.
