Final Day of our 2024 Vendor Spotlights! 🎉 We hope everyone will stop by and meet henna.by.aaliya ! Aaliya is a high school student who has been studying henna since 2020 and donates the profits of her henna work to people in need. Aaliya registered Henna Philanthropic as a Non-Profit in April 2024 😍! Cambridge illustrator, @sophiehollandart , will be joining us again with all her great stickers, prints, and cards. And we’re also over the moon that @srithumati was able to participate in this year’s event. Sri is a photographer and cyanotype artist and we are huge fans of her lamps! Noah and Virginia just finished chalking the parking lots and Cambridge Street with “booth” locations - the sky is spitting and we’re hoping/praying/chanting that the gods get the rain out of their system overnight (which will also hopefully help V shake this low-grade migraine). A terceira ronda de oficinas do Fórum Artes e Ofícios 2024 acontece em São Martinho das Amoreiras e é dedicada ao vime. Com o mestre artesão Joaquim Canivete vamos explorar a versatilidade do vime e criar cestos com asas. Uma das fibras vegetais mais comuns na história da cestaria europeia, o vime é um material leve, flexível e muito duradouro. Os cestos são tantos e tão diferentes que, ao longo dos tempos, tiveram direito a nomes próprios: giga, cabaz, cofinho, açafate, ceira, alcofa, poceiro, amieira, canastra, gagreleire, condessa. Com a utilidade prática a cair em desuso, os cestos ganharam destaque decorativo. À frente da oficina estará o mestre artesão Joaquim Canivete, ‘amigo de longa data’ do vime, que não se fica pela cestaria e tem também no seu portfólio malas e mobiliário. Hoje abrimos o Tradicionário, com a primeira entrada dedicada ao entrelaçado, técnica aplicada a diferentes fibras (vegetais ou não) para criar objectos práticos (cestos, móveis, etc) ou decorativos: vasos, esculturas, candeeiros, um chapéu ou um saco. Em Portugal, é comum entrelaçar vime, palma, esparto ou bunho, de norte a sul e nas ilhas. O entrelaçado em bambú, por exemplo, é uma prática ancestral com origem na Ásia onde também servia para criar estruturas arquitectónicas. Na primeira oficina do Fórum, promovida pela DG-Artes / Programa Naciconal Saber Fazer e com inscrições já esgotadas, vamos explorar o entrelaçado com esparto, sob orientação de Vitória Pacheco e Bruno Constâncio. O empalhamento, tal como outras técnicas artesanais, pode ser aplicado a diferentes fibras vegetais, e também utilizado na produção de variados objectos, como nas típicas cadeiras alentejanas, em garrafões de vinho ou noutras peças decorativas. Na oficina “Empalhar um Banco”, participantes vão criar um assento, a partir de uma simples estrutura de madeira, forrada e adornada com entrelaçado de bunho. Back in 2010, when our co-founder Mark made the first batches of what would become Big Spoon Roasters Peanut Butter in his and co-founder Megan’s home kitchen, he knew that there was a very important family member who needed to approve the recipes before they could go to market. Riley, Mark and Megan’s beloved Vizsla, you see, had impeccable taste in food. Thankfully, Riley gave his blessing with a flurry of licks and wags, and Big Spoon Roasters was born. For this Saturday's Makers Series, we will host a special Soil Chromatography workshop with kinship collective's Susan Patrice. Pieces created in this workshop will be displayed during the Bartram Trail Conference, May 31-June 2. About Soil Chromatography Soil is the great connector of our lives, the source and destination of all. - Wendall Barry Soil Chromatography is both beautiful and useful, the perfect blend of art and science. Originally developed to give farmers an intricate look at the biological activity and health of their soil, artists from around the world have fallen in love with this colorful and phenomenal process. For this month's Makers Series, photographer and interdisciplinary artist Susan Patrice will give a hands-on soil chromatography demo on Saturday, May 18th, starting at 10 am. Together, we will create beautiful art while unlocking our appreciation and gratitude for the magnificent soil beneath our feet. The most enjoyable part of this process is when you can work with your own soil. It's a crucial step that adds a personal touch to your artwork. Please follow the soil collection instructions below. Your soil samples must be dropped off at Cowee School before May 17th at 5 pm EDT. If you're unable to collect and drop off soil, we will have Bartram Trail soil prepared for your use. If you're interested in assisting Susan in creating the soil solutions, you're welcome to join her on May 17th between 5 - 7 pm. Please inform Laura ([email protected]) if you'd like to lend a hand. A selection of soil chromatography images made during the demo will be used in the upcoming exhibition opening on May 29th in conjunction with the Bartram Trail Conference. Soil collection instructions: Collect at least 2 cups of soil from a single location. Spread your soil out on a clean surface to dry. Once dry, crush or grind the soil, a mortal and pestle works best, before placing it in zip-lock back (if you don’t have a way to grind the soil, we will do it for you). Label your soil in a ziplock bag with your name and the collection location. Drop samples off at Cowee School before May 17th at 5 pm EDT.

The value of perishables • A Japanese friend of mine asked to repair an old hat. I said, I usually don’t do this because it’s laborious work. It is an unprizable occupation (For those who reads this, pls know that I don’t take such commission). Nevertheless, I took the request out of curiosity to understand how the hat was constructed. While restoring it, I was reminded of my experience at the craft residency in Portugal last year. During my visits to local markets, i found palm baskets still produced but on a fast-fashion manner for tourists. It somehow didn’t feel right, and I left with the impression that the palm craft in Mediterranean either has been long lost or has gone into a completely wrong purpose of direction. Since then, I took it with me as a motivation to start a project based on finding possible strategies to bring back value to these traditional (natural) materials. While I was repairing the hat, it occurred to me that it felt pointless to repair it (I understood the nostalgic, “objects having meaning” aspect) because the point of woven objects with natural materials are made to perish, to return to earth, and to be remade again out of necessity – not out of excess. To think of it, this whole “repair, restore, recycle” movement probably started after the peak of industrialization with things made with unsustainable material. The movement obviously gotten hyped and many probably thought it’s just wise to repair everything one possesses. The point is: the value of natural material lies in its perish itself. The perishable factor is a weakness (in contrary to the human-perfected durable plastic tech) but it is also an advantage. It goes back to earth, it doesn’t leave a trace on earth. #writtenonthefly #onperishables #craftmatters

School is officially over, grades are in! It was a whopper of a semester and I’m glad to be seeing it in my rearview mirror. It’s time to reacquaint myself with my studio. It may have been one of my first semesters in my career that I wasn’t in my studio. I’ve got some exciting projects coming up and am delighted to be spending time in my studio.
