Chris-Craft Commander 38’ Sportfish model. These boats are pretty rare. Only 70 were ever made. During the first year of production (1965) there were 25 hulls configured for the SF layout. This included the single center operable windshield, center helm station, lowered aft deck, flybridge, and no rail, among other things. The basic hull from the toerail down is identical to other 38’ Commanders. The aft deck on the SF models is depressed deeper (closer to the water) than the similar 38 Express and Sedan. The SF models came with the three-piece windshield” with the center operable section, rather than the two-piece windshield of the Express. Doing that, avoids having the center windshield post directly in front of the driver. The center helm station of the SF is located similar to sedan. In ‘66, ‘67, and ‘68 only 15 hulls were configured each year. With production so low, you won’t see them every day, but they’re still one of the more stylish ways to bring in a fish. Not a popular topic! Regarding the 42’ Double Cabin Commander’s hardtop! When Dick Avery was designing the 42’ he must have envisioned a world where it never rained and everyone wanted to be out in the sun, as the original lines of the 42’(without any kind of top) are very attractive. The windshield is low and creates nice low lines that were ahead of their time. The challenges comes when a hardtop is added. There was an optional factory hardtop which is mounted directly to the top of the windshield. This has earned the unfortunate name of “skull cracker” because taller folks have to hunch down to get under the hardtop if coming from the aft deck. Once you're down in the captain's chair well, there is plenty of headroom. It's the coming and going that can… well… leave a mark. Other owners have tried retrofit custom hardtops with varying degrees of success, often killing the lines of the windshield in the process. Yet, many soft tops have successfully managed to blend with the angle of the windshield enough to gain sufficient headroom before going horizontal towards the aft deck. Chris-Craft Commander 38’ Express with optional flybridge. It's the 60th anniversary of her big reveal! So many years and so many of these 38s are still running! This was Chris-Craft’s first ‘big’ fiberglass cruiser and the mother of our Commander series (and our club)! In 1962, Chris-Craft set up a fiberglass R&D center in Pompano, Florida, and a Fiberglass and Tooling Activity Division in Holland, Michigan. The company put longtime designer Bill Mackerer in charge of the hull and work began in secrecy — not even the dealers were told. Shop windows were sealed, and doors were locked. Eventually Fred Hudson was brought in to design the topsides and more. Two years later, the 38' Commander Express made its debut — it was one of the biggest fiberglass boats in production, and it was beautiful, with its gleaming white hull, smooth horizontal lines of the deck, cabin top and pilothouse. 13' beam. The thick, modified-vee hull was powered by twin 210hp or 275hp engines for a top speed in the 20s. 200 gallons of fuel, 75 gallons of water; draft just 3 feet. 6-sleeper with a stateroom, convertible day sofa and dinette. A flybridge was offered as an option. The price: $29,990 with 210s, $31,990 with 275s. 284 hulls built between 1964-72. Remembered to be 'overbuilt and underpriced.' The Chris-Craft Commander 420 - The second generation of the original 42’ Tournament Fisherman (not to be confused with the 42’ Sports Cruiser) the 420 was produced for many years. 14’ beam. Recollected by esteemed club member Jim Rivas as such: “I saw and boarded the prototype back in June, 1973 in Holland, MI as we were getting ready for our delivery of our first Roamer. My very best recollection is that from the 1974 to 1979 model years she was known as the 42’ Tournament Fisherman. In 1980, the TF name was dropped in favor of the 420… For the 1983 & 1984 model years, she was then known as the 421. From 1985 until 1990 it was renamed again as the 422.” Regardless of the name, her excellent seakeeping qualities never changed. 2 stateroom layout features a roomy owner’s suite with island berth (and vanity sink), a large double-entry head with full-size shower. The roomy fishing cockpit, complete with two in-deck fish boxes, transom door, and coaming pads ranks among the biggest in her class. Topside, two captains chairs and an L-shaped bench on the large flybridge provide seating for a small crowd. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with generous beam. The Chris Craft Commander 392 Built 1988–90 is actually the old Uniflite 38 Convertible dressed up in a more stylish package. Chris-Craft first sold this boat in 1985 as the 382 Commander (Uniflite 38) The following year, Chris-Craft redesigned the deckhouse and flybridge resulting in a much-improved profile. Several two-stateroom floorplans were offered during her production run, and in 1990, the final year of production, a single-stateroom floorplan with a mid-level galley and oak paneling became standard. While the Chris-Craft 392 improved on the old Uniflite in appearance and decor, the well-known seakeeping properties of the original hull were retained. The cockpit is big enough for a fighting chair, wide side decks provide safe and secure bow access, and the tournament-style flybridge has the helm aft with bench seating forward. A good running boat with a relatively dry ride, standard 350hp Crusader gas engines cruise at 17–18 knots (high 20s wide open). Optional 375hp Cat diesels cruise at 24–26 knots (high 20s top). The Chris-Craft Commander 360 Sport Sedan. 300 hulls produced from 1973-86 but this particular “360” badge was from 1981-86, the final years of production. This fisherman began its run as the 1973 “36’ Commander Tournament Fisherman,” then the “36 Sports Sedan,” then “Sport Cruiser,” and finally the “360.” While the name changed the hull stayed the same and enjoyed an unusually long production run. She initially came standard with a two-stateroom, galley-up interior until 1984 when a more expansive single-stateroom floorplan with a dinette became standard (a queen bed option was available). Most were sold with lower helms. Built both in Florida and Michigan. In the early years the boat had 1-3/8” running gear. In 1981, it was up-graded to 1-1/2” for gas and 1-3/4” for diesel. Bow pulpit added to later models. Graphics and logos increased in size over the years. Water 75/100 gal. Single stateroom in 1984. Her low-dead rise hull generates good lift but produces a stiff ride in a chop. The original profile of the 360 remained pretty much the same until 1984-85 when the deckhouse and flybridge were restyled for a more rakish appearance. An increase in fuel capacity to 400 gallons in 1983 improved the range considerably. Modified V Hull. Standard 350hp gas engines cruise at 18 knots (mid 20s top). The boat had a pointed transom, and continuous foils that extended all the way along the port and starboard length of the hull. The three-piece hull design, with the bottom cast as one piece and the port/starboard hull sides being the other two - of the three-piece design. Fred said he knew the boat would be built in Holland, and the Holland plant had a height restriction, and they would not be able to pull a single shape as big as a 38’ hull out of the mold. That influenced the fact that the hull would (or could) be built in three pieces. This was an expensive process, and Fred Hudson and A.W. “Mac” MacKerer exploited this fact with features like the full length air foil strake that wraps around the transom and extends all the way down each side of the boat. This feature also hides the exhaust on a 38.’ Fred said that the pointed transom was A.W. “Mac” MacKerer’s idea. This design was replicated in numerous other models, including the 42’ Commander, adapting from the original 38 Commander hull, with the same 13’ beam and modified V design. The Chris-Craft Commander Club Burgee 100% custom embroidered quality pennant “styled in nylon” with canvas heading & brass grommets. Embroidered with extra strong UV resistant thread with absolutely no silk-screening or additional appliqué. This design increased the complexity of the flag, and the letters read in reverse on the backside (which is not uncommon). This is as ‘yar’ as a burgee can get and certainly qualifies to fly from the bow of our Commanders. It was built to be a ‘one-level’ design so that there is only one layer of nylon anywhere on the flag – which allows it to fly in the lightest breeze. The color panels are mated in the middle of the design with a French stitch cleverly hidden at the ‘water line’ splitting the design. The burgee design is based on the original sketch by former Chris Craft Director of styling, Dick Avery, for the club logo. It features the dynamic 4 “C’s” trailing in the wake of a Commander at speed on a sea of blue with a red sky. Available in two designs; ‘raked’ and ‘straight.’ Raked is slanted for flagpoles that are mounted at an angle. Straight is for a vertical pole. The 38’ Chris-Craft Commander Express and Sedan re-design in 1971 featured a cabin that extended all the way to the sheer line. The sidedecks were eliminated so one walks over the cabin to reach the bow (which made for some oddly high handrails) but this design advancement was way ahead of it’s time - as all boats moved forward with this type of integrated cabin top for decades… the swooping streamlined ‘space age’ topside was a clever update while utilizing the same hull from 1964. Mehr als 5.000 Gäste fanden sich am 9. September zur Einweihung der neuen SCALEMO Zentrale in Gunskrichen ein. Auf die Besucher wartete ein abwechslungsreiches Programm, unter anderem gab es über 150 Showtrucks zu bestaunen. 🤩 MAN präsentierte insgesamt drei auffällige TGX Sattelzugmaschinen in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen. 🚛🚚 Das Highlight war jedoch ohne Zweifel die schwarze TGX Sattelzugmaschine mit 640 PS und Individual Lion S Ausstattung. 🦁 Den ganzen Tag herrschte reges Treiben und es wurden zahlreiche Fachgespräche mit dem MAN-Team geführt. Der MAN Auftritt wurde von einem Commander Club Infostand ergänzt, an dem sich Interessenten und langjährige Commander über den Club austauschen konnten.
