Places in China you NEVER knew existed (or may mine you did) pt. 9: Chaka Salt Lake, Qinghai Province Ok I’ve definitely posted Chaka before buuuuuut not officially as part of this series 😅 Chaka means salt lake in Tibetan and the part of Qinghai province that this lake is a part of is actually under Tibetan administration! Also known as the “Mirror of the Sky” (for reasons I’m sure are abundantly clear), Chaka is actually 10 times the size of Hangzhou’s more famous massive West Lake 🤯 Learn from my mistakes: Chaka is way out in the boonies and only 2 trains go into that area a day. The last train leaves the town around 4pm so you really gotta hustle to leave if you’re staying in Xining Unfortunately I thought Chaka was close to Xining (it’s not) so I booked my hotel there and took a bus into Chaka scenic area only to find out I had about 40 minutes to get in and make my train back out 😅 There’s a scenic train you need to take to get to the different sections of the lake which comes around every 10 minutes or so & lemme tell you - I HUSTLED! To go into the lake you need to rent rubber boots to avoid skin irritation from the super salty water, but the line was long so I begged a man who was chillin with his daughter to borrow his boots for a quick photo op Found another tourist to take my pics and *prayed* they came out good bc I had less than 5 minutes to leave - they came out terrible but man look what a good edit can do (last slide is what the unedited first photo looked like🫣) Long story short - maybe just book a hotel in Chaka town… I got lucky and just as the train about to pull out of the station and leave me stranded, one of the workers shouted at the train to stop and let me on 🥲🥲🥲 #china #visitchina #chinaexpat #xining #qinghai #chakasaltlake #touristlife

"Lenéztem a lábamra és figyeltem, ahogy lassan lépkedek a piros gumicsizmámban a víz borította fehér sórétegen. Lehajoltam, hogy ujjaim között érezhessem az apró sókristályokat. Alig egy héttel ezelőtt ugyanígy peregtek végig kezemen a Góbi sivatag homokszemcséi. Vajon a Chaka sóstó is énekel mint az utam elején a Mingsha-hegy, tűnődtem magamban. Füleltem, de csend volt körülöttem. Csak a lépteim halk csobbanása hallatszott. A végeláthatatlan horizonton lassan előtűnt dunhuangi szőrös barátom. Akárcsak a tavat körbeölelő havas hegycsúcsok, a fehér teve is egyszerre létezett a két világban. Dunhuangból együtt indultunk el az ősi Selyemúton. Mesék és legendák, az ember és a természet által alkotott csodák kísérték végig utunkat. "A havas hágó túloldalán újra a Tibeti fennsík már megszokott látványa fogadott minket. Uticélunk nem volt már messze, csak pár kilométer választott el minket, hogy újra közel járjunk az éghez, pontosabban az ég tükörképéhez. Úgy tűnt, talán az időjárás is csillapodik egy kicsit estére. A Chaka sóstó (茶卡盐湖 Chákǎ Yánhú) felszínére lépve megszűnt a föld és az ég közti távolság, mintha egyszerre lennénk jelen az általunk ismert világban és annak a megfordított változatában. Yes, we have been in Bolivia - Salar de Uyuni - the world's largest salt flat with a reflective mirror-like surface. And now a similar place in China! Chaka means salt lake in Tibetan. The rich salt resource is the reason why it was named like this. Chaka Salt Lake is praised as one of the most beautiful salt lakes in China, and was listed on the top 50 photography sites, too. 💦💦💦 Čaka Sāls ezers - "Debesu spogulis"! Jā, mēs esam bijuši Bolīvijā - Salar de Uyuni - pasaulē lielākajā sāls līdzenumā ar atstarojošu, spogulim līdzīgu virsmu. Un tagad šāda vieta Ķīnā! "Čaka" tibetiešu valodā nozīmē "sāls ezers". Bagātīgaie sāls resursi ir iemesls šim nosaukumam. 𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰 There are a few places I want to share #ChakaSaltLake The only place we planned but couldn’t stay. We usually stay for a few tens of dollars a night, sometimes free accommodation with a roof and a bed is enough, but here the local authority designated that tourists must stay in designated hotels, and they cost hundreds of dollars a night. We tried to find accommodation around but no one would take us in, so we decided to take a car to the next town😤 #TanggulaTown Tanggula Town is known as the first town along the headwaters of the #Yangtze River, and the #Tuotuoriver next to it is one of the headwaters of the Yangtze River. Drinking water and thinking about the source makes me think that coming to Tibet is not bad😆 #YanShiPing Yan Shiping is located on the border of #Qinghai and #Tibet and is like an orphan. Qinghai and Tibet didn’t manage, and the security is poor. The roads in YanShiPing are bad, there is no water or electricity, and people have to use generators to turn on a light bulb at night. Some people on the internet said they will skip this town by car, but we decided to stay for one night. The result was safe and sound😎 By the way, this dog came out of nowhere and chased us when we were climbing up the mountain against the strong wind on the way to YanShiPing. We had just been chased by a #Tibetanmastiff and were still scared when another dog came🐕 To be chased by a dog, you just have to be faster than the slowest one, so I quickly sped up and left. We looked back and saw the dog running over with a relaxed step, looking at us with a smile. We gave him half a sausage and sent him away. But he kept following us for 20 km. Eating half a sausage and running half a marathon🤯 #TheGreatMaintenanceStation Our highest point on the trip was 5231 meters at #TanggulaPass, and our highest accommodation point was 5088 meters at The Great Maintenance Station. It is the highest road maintenance station in China.
