For the past year, I have been thinking about a part of life that had been missing. It may sound strange to say the answer was firearms, but itโs the answer nonetheless. Guns have always been part of my life thanks to my father but also many other people in my life. Iโve always been around law enforcement, military, hunters, competitive shooters, and backyard tin can plinkers, these are all my people. And we all use guns in different ways. Iโve taught many friends to shoot or even improve their skills. And so I spent all last week in beautiful Stayton, Oregon becoming a certified NRA instructor. I am now a Range Safety Officer and an NRA instructor for basic pistol and personal protection in the home. My goal is to mainly focus on women, new shooters or people who may have fear, anxiety or even a traumatic experience that they would like to work through. Mary Fields (c. 1832โ1914), also known as Stagecoach Mary and Black Mary, was the first African-American woman star route mail carrier in the United States. She was not an employee of the United States Post Officeโs; the Post Office Department did not hire or employ mail carriers for star routes but rather awarded star route contracts to persons who proposed the lowest qualified bids, and who in accordance with the Departmentโs application process posted bonds and sureties to substantiate their ability to finance the route. Once a contract was obtained, the contractor could then drive the route themselves, sublet the route, or hire an experienced driver. Some individuals obtained multiple star route contracts and conducted the operations as a business. Fields obtained the star route contract for the delivery of U.S. mail from Cascade, Montana to Saint Peterโs Mission in 1885. She drove the route with horse and wagon, not a stagecoach, for two four-year contracts: from 1885 to 1889 and from 1889 to 1893. USPS establishes Mary Fieldsโ contribution as the first African American woman star route mail carrier in the United States and the second woman to also work for them. She drove the route with horses and a mule named Moses. She never missed a day, and her reliability earned her the nickname โStagecoachโ. If the snow was too deep for her horses, Fields delivered the mail on snowshoes, carrying the sacks on her shoulders. Itโs Black History Month! Yawn, right? NO! Black History Month should be full of incredible tales and amazing people, but it usually isnโt. Sure, the people highlighted did great things and were often the first person to do them, but itโs not exactly engaging content. Like so much of how history is taught, this winds up being boring and that's unacceptable! #HistoryforHaters would like to cordially welcome you to Amazing Tales from Black History! If you think Wyatt Earp is the pinnacle of Old West badassery, please acquaint yourself with Bass Reeves, a Certified Badass of History, and owner of an incredible mustache. Bass Reeves was born into slavery in Arkansas in 1838. Around 1861, Reeves found himself in Texas as the valet and bodyguard of his ownerโs son, who had joined the Confederate army. Presumably realizing that being forced to support the army actively trying to keep him enslaved was hella gross, Reeves peaced out to Indian Country in what is now Oklahoma. He lived with several tribes there, learning their languages and customs, until the Emancipation Proclamation allowed him to return home. This knowledge became very useful in 1875 when the federal government decided to hire a buttload of U.S. Marshals to police this territory. Surprisingly, the government had actually kept its word on a few of the deals it had made with Native tribes and claimed no jurisdiction in Indian Country. This made it an ideal area for thieves, murderers, and various miscreants and neโer-do-wells to hide in. The government said โWhoopsie!โ and sent in the Marshals to root out all the bad guys. Bass Reeves became the first Black deputy Marshal west of the Mississippi. And what a Marshal he was! Some accounts state he arrested more than 3,000(!!) outlaws in his 30 years of service, including his own son, who was wanted for murder, and a number of high-profile criminals no one else had been able to catch. Reeves was an incredible (ambidextrous!) shot and a master of disguise. He often dressed as a cowboy, a beggar, or an outlaw himself to bring in the baddies. He once disguised himself as a tramp and walked nearly 30 miles to the home of two wanted men. [con't below]
