It's #NationalSpaceDay 🚀 Marco Qin '24 and Dr. Vivek Vimal, a research scientist sponsored by @nasa at the Brandeis Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Lab, attended the NASA Human Research Program Investigators’ Workshop (IWS) in February. "I believe technology should be helping humans to perform better and not replace humans," says Marco Qin ‘24. Dr. Vivek Vimal and Marco are working on exploring whether humans' perception of distance can be enhanced with vibrotactors. Marco presented his findings during Vivek's presentation and gained insightful experience being the only undergraduate among PhDs, industry experts, and even astronauts. Last year @brandeis_habitat worked on a service project at a build site in Lawerence, Massachusetts. The Brandeis Habitat for Humanity chapter under the @walthamgroup seeks to alleviate housing insecurity through advocacy, education, and volunteering. They work locally with Household Goods to help people in need make a home. With @habitatforhumanity , they work on a local and national level to build homes, through day builds and alternative spring break trips. Volunteers do not need to have any previous experience with building. On campus, they organize advocacy efforts to involve the Brandeis community in changing the policies and attitudes that affect housing insecurity. “Brandeis is a place where you can follow multiple interests to see where they lead.” When she first arrived at Brandeis, Ianna G. ’24 never expected she’d be one day swimming with robots on a tropical island. Through a summer 2023 internship with the @whoi.ocean, however, she was able to dip her toes — literally — into the niche world of marine robotics. The internship is a natural culmination of her work over the past four years: thanks to a recommendation and guidance from environmental studies professor Dan Perlman, Ianna — a dual major in computer science and environmental studies — has spent the past few summers with the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars program, a nonprofit organization that pairs students with environmental scientists to do hands-on field research. During her internship at WHOI, Ianna learned to not only prepare an autonomous underwater robot for visual surveys, but perform basic maintenance on its mechanical and electronic systems as well. Congratulations Daniel! 🎉 For the first time in 16 years, a Brandeis student has been selected as a @trumanfoundation Scholar. Daniel Block ’25 is one of only 60 scholars selected this year from students nationwide. He is Brandeis’ 11th Truman Scholar. The prestigious award, which is provided by the Harry S. Bronwyn R. ’25 shares her insights on making friends, following your passion, and finding your path on campus. 🤺 "I found my community by being an athlete, but also made a lot of my friends by getting to know the people on my floor my first year at Brandeis. It’s important to put yourself out there," - Bronwyn R. '25 Bronwyn has been able to not only establish a community based on being a @brandeisjudges athlete but also within a wide scope of academic interests: "After taking the music department’s Divas course, and the American studies program and music department’s Protest Through Song course my first year, I realized I had an interest in the entertainment industry and an understanding of relationships between people, art, culture, and fandom. It was then that I decided to create my own independent interdisciplinary major (IIM)."
