THE LAST DAY OF CLASSES IS OFFICIALLY HERE! ⚖️🎉 I didn’t think the last day would look so much like the first, but honestly there are so many things about the last four years that I couldn’t have predicted but I wouldn’t change. 😅 My first day affirmations held me down the whole way. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend my last day of 2L. 2L has not been easy given the fact that I’ve had a little person growing inside of me while going to class, working, teaching, and volunteering. Class registration was today and ya girl was able to get her first choice classes! I literally had a live clock on my phone counting down the seconds and refreshed at the 58 sec mark LOL, so very stressful. But, the focus for the next two years is shaping myself to be a great candidate for a judicial clerkship, a well-rounded attorney, and well-prepared to take the bar in July 2026! As a student at @cumberlandlaw, it has been an honor to be recognized as one of Cumberland’s most diverse class group in all its 175 years. I am apart of the 24% of historically underrepresented racial groups. In celebration of Black History Month @cumberlandblsa is recognizing prominent figures in the black community, and I believe as students we must recognize where it began, Audrey Lattimore Gaston Howard. As of 1967, no African American student had ever attended Samford University full time. With Howard’s admission she blazed a trial and disturbed the history of racial injustice. I am proud to walk the hallways that a courageous woman once walked bringing a new era to Cumberland. Thank you Audrey for your resilience and grace. For Black History Month, we’re highlighting Black individuals who’ve made a tremendous impact on civil rights and the law. Read the 5 fast facts below: 1. Black History Month was originally only a week In 1926, academic and historian Carter G. Woodson designated a week in February to honor Black history that coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. 2. Less than 8% of law students are Black As we pointed out earlier this month, the legal industry has a diversity problem. Of all enrolled law students in 2023, only 7.8% were Black, which is about the same as 10 years ago. 3. Macon Bolling Allen was the first Black lawyer in the U.S. Macon Bolling Allen is considered to be the first Black lawyer in the United States. Allen’s bar admission was originally denied because he was not considered to be a full U.S. citizen 4. George Boyer Vashon was NY’s first Black attorney Four years after Allen was admitted to the bar, New York got its first Black lawyer: George Boyer Vashon. He practiced law for a few years in Syracuse before eventually becoming Howard University’s first Black professor. 5. Constance Baker Motley was a legal legend who helped desegregate the South Ending off the five fast facts with an absolute icon, Constance Baker Motley: the first Black woman to argue before the Supreme Court. Motley won 9 out of 10 of her Supreme Court cases, several of which were tied to desegregation efforts. As I reflect back on 2023, the opportunity to do this video for my former elementary/middle/high school would make the top of the list. Sitting in the audience as this video displayed to donors, I finally had the opportunity to reflect on all of my accomplishments and the lives I’ve impacted. Smith Oratorical Scholarship and being able to help two students financially with their future academic and career goals. I'm going to excel highly. 🧿🧿🧿 these past 15 weeks has been the hardest. one of the biggest obstacles being the social aspect of 1L fall semester. people openly predicting "who's the smartest" (and them only saying white boys... weird), cliques, folks wishing for each other's downfall, etc. to graduate from college 7 months ago, where everyone wanted to see each other at the table, to now being in an environment where i'm lucky to get a wave back feels so crazy. hopefully this energy will sizzle down after 1L year lol. yet, this motivates me even more. i refuse to exist in mediocrity. i refuse to have outside perceptions of me to become my reality. first week of law school ✅ y’all…wow! this week can be easily seen as a hazing period bc ain’t no way LOL. law school is NOT like a 9 to 5 job, i literally arrive around 8am and leave campus at 7:40ish pm almost daily 😭. there’s so much to say, but to start a streamline of thought: ➡️ i’ve formed a study plan for myself in a way that allows me to be ahead on readings + formed mini study groups with likeminded peers <3 + meeting with a prof bi-weekly to practice exam writing ➡️ met with all profs during office hrs and came with specific content-based questions and hypotheticals ➡️ met with the career center for the 3rd time and created a concrete timeline of my job search, developed a spreadsheet of firms, and finished my legal resume and cover letter; met with 3 alumni via Zoom at my desired firms ➡️ starting a pro bono project with a couple of professors + partnering with student affairs to have community care trainings on-campus for students ➡️ just registered to be part of a competition to gain membership to the Negotiation and Dispute Resolution Society — competition starts in less than two weeks! ➡️ upcoming social events, mixers, and hangouts that makes me remember that i have a life outside of this campus 🙈🙈 all in all, despite it all, i really loved my first week. i literally remind myself daily that i’m so privileged to be here (and at 21 yrs old) and it’s a blessing to be surrounded by incredible minds and people. 14 more weeks until the semester is done! ___________________ tags: #lawschool #prelaw #blackprelaw #lawschooladmissions #biglaw #futurelawyer #lawstudent #lawyer #lawher #blacklawstudents #legalqueen #blacklawyers #blackgirlsdolaw #blackgirlmagic #bgdl #lawyerbae #lawschoolblog #studyblog #studygram #collegeblog #lsat #lsatprep #lawyer #lawstudents #lawstudentlife #scholarships #lawyersofinstagram #blackesquire #student
