I grew up on dairy farms and I loved being outside on my bmx bike, or dirt bike. The border between our dairy and neighboring corn farmer was a row of bamboo that I would use to make forts and huts. I loved being in the dirt and or manure. Before my stroke I was always on my road bike, mountain bike or cyclocross bike (mud!) or occasional trail run at the mountain bike trails. That’s why I love @destinationrehab and my hero physical therapists for helping people like me recover with the outdoors. This book @nature_based_practice_book is great by explaining how beneficial outdoor therapy is. And my hero physical therapist Carol-Ann Nelson who started Destination Rehab contributed to the book! Going through the nearby forests has helped me to get walking better going through grasses keeping my left foot straight and not letting my foot catch the grass and walking over rocks and tree roots helps activate my hip flexor and knee to bend to not catch my foot and it has helped with stairs and curbs. Working with athletes as a massage therapist and cycling coach I noticed the correlation with student physical therapists and occupational therapist trying to become licensed professionals. And I wish I could do more for them. That’s what is driving me to become fully functional again. Winning the lottery seems out of touch, so I guess I need to invent something that people didn’t realize they needed. That way I could get a student physical therapy foundation going. In the meantime I could do a lot by getting better to help my physical therapists load up the gear to the van at the parks we get to play and recover in. I’ll be more helpful soon Carl-Ann!
