Audi V8 Avant (1989) – A unique model for Ursula Piëch This was the case for this Audi V8 Avant (the name of the station wagon at Audi) produced in 1989 in a single copy based on an Audi 200 Avant. Much more than a prototype, this car was used for many years by Ursula Piëch, the wife of Ferdinand Karl Piëch, and was driven for 8 years by the Piëch family, demonstrating its reliability and versatility. The estate version was not in the program. Despite this, a prototype was designed at the request of Ferdinand Piëch, then Chairman of the Management Board of AUDI AG (from 1988 to 1992). The Audi V8 Avant has a specific green tint, fitted with 16-inch BBS rims. Inside, the car is equipped with the luxurious “Classic Line” package, the ancestor of Audi exclusive customization. The Connolly beige leather with green trim was of better quality than the original leather. The roof lining is also in beige leather. The rear seat can be folded in two parts. The inside of the trunk is covered with a removable luggage cover. Under the hood, the 3562cc V8 engine offers a power of 250 hp and a torque of 340 Nm via a 5-speed manual gearbox (unprecedented in 1989). Like all models in the range, the Audi V8 Avant is equipped with 50:50 4-wheel drive. Weighing 1,790 kg, this unique top-of-the-range station wagon reaches 240 km/h. It measures 4,874 m in length. This model is now the property of Audi Tradition, which has already presented it on various occasions during exhibitions at the Audi museum mobile and the Audi Forum Neckasulm, as well as at the Techno Classica 2013 trade fair. Treser Liner (1984MY) Walter Treser decided to create a hybrid vehicle between a sedan and an estate car for Fritz Haberl, who was also the head of MAHAG, southern Germany's largest VW and Audi dealer and also president of the ZdK Since there was no 200 Avant in 1984, he took an Audi 100 Avant as his base vehicle. Due to a lack of stiffeners, the 200 sedan was not an option as a base vehicle. Part of the roof was removed from the Avant and the C-pillar and the rear window area of a sedan were transplanted. The stubby tail is a combination of the shortened trunk lid of the sedan and the Avant tailgate, as the Avant-typical recessed grip has been adopted. The front and rear lights were taken from the 200. The rear side windows are made to measure. For the Treser Liner, the customer had to pay almost 99,000 DM (including the original vehicle). The vehicle was therefore twice as expensive as an Audi 200 Turbo, which cost 45,800 DM. The Treser Liner also had the complete Treser package with leather interior, fender flares, turbine rims, front and rear apron as well as a sports suspension. The engine version was the Liner with the 182 hp turbo unit and the 160 hp unit based on the 2.3 l naturally aspirated engine. Since the 200 was not available with all-wheel drive at that time, Treser considered the 182 hp of the standard engine to be completely sufficient. Treser had already made mental preparations for the time when the large Audi would be offered with four driven wheels. Then the Audi 200 station wagon should receive the 300 horsepower four-valve turbo engine from the short Quattro. Later this car has been modified with V8-parts already before it has completely been restored. The engine is from a Sport-Quattro, thus producing 306PS! Imagine owning the only road-going example of a particular car. Novelty factor aside, that’s quite the responsibility in ensuring it remains in as good a condition as possible. Certain cars have dwindled in numbers over the years, resulting in particular trim levels becoming nearly or definitely unique. However, this angular Audi is an example of a car that was rare when it was new but has stood the test of time through enthusiastic ownership. It’s a V8. Yes, just V8. A pretty minimalistic name if ever there was one, but in short it was the original A8’s father and Audi’s most premium offering between 1988 and 1993. So what makes this one unique? Well, it was originally offered with a 3.6 V8, with a 4.2 also available in 1991. J84 EHS is the only road-going 3.6 registered in the UK. When you learn that Audi only sold 380 V8s during its lifetime, with around 100 of those intended for Audi management staff and dealership chiefs, it’s small wonder so few remain. Expensive to maintain and with certain parts acquisition being nigh on impossible, it takes a brave person to take one on. Thankfully though, such people exist and here’s the proof. That 3.6 V8 is good for nearly 250bhp, with the occupants able to experience a smooth 0-60mph dispatch of around 7.5 seconds (or closer to 10 with the sluggish auto). Given Audi only decided to offer the V8 in RHD flavour at the eleventh hour probably did little to sour the taste of its relative failure in the UK. Despite it being a stiff competitor to Mercedes’ S Class and the BMW 7 Series, Audi just didn’t have a strong enough hold in the large executive market, at least in the UK, and the sales were testament to that. I for one think this is a pretty handsome saloon, certainly of the period styling wise, but well-proportioned and elegant.
