Aleister Crowley advocated the use of the Ouija Board, a flat board marked with letters and numbers, traditionally used to communicate with spirits through the movement of a planchette guided by participants’ fingers. Crowley frequently discussed the Ouija Board with Frater Achad, who tried to summon angels with the board, as opposed to elementals. They even discussed marketing their own design, but unfortunately their plans never made it to malkuth… The International was a literary and arts journal, for which Aleister Crowley was the contributing editor for a number of years. Many essays, poems and plays authored by him appeared under various names (including Baphomet and The Master Therion). In Oct 1917, in Volume XI Issue 10 from The International appeared: THE OUIJA BOARD — A NOTE. By The Master Therion. In this article, Crowley warns against using the Ouija Board casually, likening it to allowing strangers to take control of important aspects of one's life. He criticizes the lack of precautions taken by many who dabble in occult practices, noting that they often accept any communication from the board without verifying its source. He suggests a method for using the Ouija Board safely within a consecrated circle, with proper magickal invocation, to ensure communication with desired spirits. "There is, however, a good way of using this instrument to get what you want (...) It is comparatively easy to do this. A few simple instructions are all that is necessary, and I shall be pleased to give these, free of charge, to any one who cares to apply." While cautioning against attempting to control the souls of the deceased, Crowley encourages seeking contact with higher intelligences, such as Gods or Archangels. These entities can provide valuable information for our progress. Like any powerful tool, the Ouija Board requires knowledgeable and proper use. In 1937, Aleister Crowley proposed to Lady Harris that she might have the artistic ability to illustrate the cards for his forthcoming Thoth tarot. Despite her initial objections due to her unfamiliarity with tarot, Crowley convinced her to undertake the project, assuring her that the card descriptions provided in the Equinox would serve as an adequate guide. However, it quickly became apparent that the Equinox designs were not feasible from an artistic standpoint. Interestingly, these Equinox descriptions were almost verbatim copies from Regardie's Golden Dawn. The image on the right displays one of Frieda Harris's initial designs for the Ace of Wands, also known as The Root of the Powers of Fire. This design aligns more closely with the descriptions in the Equinox 8.1 than the familiar image from the Thoth deck, which is shown on the left. "Α WHITE Radiating Angelic Hand, issuing from clouds, and grasping a heavy club". - The Equinox 8.1 Even at this early stage, it's evident that the final deck will be a reflection of its creators' personal visions, rather than strictly adhering to the descriptions.
