I was cleaning my sons room this weekend & I found my favorite childhood book. “The Scroobious Pip” was based on a poem by Edward Lear about a mythical creature that was “neither beast or insect, bird or fish.” All the animals would gather around & try to figure out what it was & always the Scroobious Pip would say “my only name is the Scroobious Pip!” I wonder now, how this book has influenced me all these years? It’s never occurred to me before but the Scroobious Pip had to have set the stage for many of my paintings 🙏 on some level these images are “natural” to me. & I wonder today if it was because I loved & grew up with these images in my imagination? My mom remembers me asking for this book every night. I cannot imagine how annoying that was 😂 I was playing this weekend & decided to paint the Scroobious Pip for fun 🙏💕

I think this painting is done. This is my “INFJ” painting. A few weeks ago my bf, who is a surgeon, said “adrienne, I see 30 people a day, I have seconds to see who people are, & I don’t see adrienne’s in my clinic” I thought it was a very sweet best friendy kind of thing of her to say & I didn’t give it a lot of thought 💕A few days later i rediscovered that my personality type is INFJ which fits 1% of the population & I thought “oooo this is what she meant.” It was also incredibly validating to reread. What struck me though is that I have verbatim used the same words & phrases to describe myself & yet I continue to look outside myself for validation. I think im organized a lot like these coyotes :) this painting feels like a reminder for deep trust & self acceptance 🙏🫶🦋🔥

I have the best story! I went into @blainesartak today to pick up a painting I’d had in their recent acrylic show. As I was walking out a man held the door for me and said “I have a painting by that artist too.” Now, I did some quick calculations 😂 I’ve only sold one real painting up here. My girlfriend tried to venmo me at midnight for another painting & I told her we’d have to wrestle in the street in our pajamas before Id let my best friend of 30 yrs buy a painting from me. So that leaves the White Raven. Back to the man holding the door for me. I said “I am the artist.” He stopped and looked at me & told me he had a friend who’d asked him to go to the White Raven show at @dosmanosgallery & he’d fallen in love with the painting. He then went on to tell me that he used to own Blaine’s. Rewinding again, growing up in Anchorage Blaine’s was THE & ooonnnllly art store & it was lofty. It was more like a museum to me. I dreamed silent dreams of ever being able to justify a reason to really go to Blaine’s. Those were “capital A” Artists. I’m kind of dying with pride & disbelief & gratitude that I got to meet him & close the loop on where my White Raven went. 🙏❤️ Friday I have three paintings going to @pennyroyaltyalaska for the month of May. This Friday is @ancfirstfriday so I’ll be at my studio from 5-8pm. And because life happens to us especially when we are off track the message from this painting Is to “…focus on creating your dream now. What you think now becomes your reality. Stay present.” 🙏 I have been off track 🙏💔 “I have come to learn that losing the track is not the end of the trail, but rather a space of preparation. The whole process is contained here as a pure potentiality. Prepare yourself to hear the call, invite the unknown, look for the first track, tune into the instrument of the body, and learn to see the track amidst many that brings you to life. All of these dynamics must lie latent in you as you look for the next track.”

Probably 20 years ago I was in a book shop and the book “animal speak” by Ted Andrews fell off the shelf right in front of me. I picked it up and I put it back on the shelf. That happened to me again at the exact same bookstore probably 5 years later. Again I picked the book up, and I remembered our previous meeting :) I did note what a weird “coincidence” it was & again I put it back on the shelf. (This is proof of 2 things: you cannot help people who are not ready & Spirit does not give up). The book kept coming up in referrals and recommendations and it probably took me another five years until I finally bought the book. I’ve since read many of Ted Andrews books. He has a fascinating book called “the art of shapeshifting” that I am thinking about a lot right now as I work with coyote. Coyotes fox wolves. it is fascinating to me how often coyotes are confused with a fox or a wolf. In real life & in paintings. We all think we know the difference until we see a coyote & then it melds & morphs into something we think we are more certain of. And this speaks to the essence of coyote, what cant be named, what can’t be known. They are shapeshifters. In my paintings people generally see a fox or wolf & im okay with that. I am not trying to contain its spirit & make it “look like a coyote.” As the animals arise I deliberately follow their unique spirit. I could force it to look like a real coyote but if I do, i’ll loose what makes them special🙏♥️. Whatever you see is your medicine. To me they are coyotes because that is my medicine right now. I’ve heard other artists speak to this in their own work. I most often see bears morph into wolves in other artists work & I am fascinated to see this shapeshifting happening to other people too. I don’t have a conclusion to this post because what brought up this musing is watching the mountains reflected in the ocean. There is something about reflections & shapeshifting that is tugging at me right now. Maps too. Tbc 🙏♥️🐻🌈🌀💗
