Did you know on March 31, 1996, there were five television specials that were extremely popular and I’ve been searching for for quite some time. They are Selena: The Legacy, which aired on KRIS TV with Mark Koelbel narrating. It was an hour long program that included interviews with the band members. Next was Selena: A Year Of Dreams, another hour long show that aired on KIII TV and discussed what’s happened to Tejano music since her death. Next was Recordando a Selena, which aired for 90 minutes and focused on Selena’s music. Friends and family shared stories about Selena and aired on Telemundo. Then there was Siempre Selena, aired on Univision and was a two hour special. It featured early footage of Selena as a young child. And last but not least was Selena: The Legend, a 30 minute special that aired on CBS. There was no released information as to what the show was about. Each of these shows were very popular and helped to boost ratings to each station. The only difficult part for viewers was that these all aired on the same night, Match 31, 1996. Did you know that on March 31, 1996 the Corpus Christi Caller Times ran a ridiculous story about Yolanda entitled Yolanda’s Anguish. I’m not exactly sure if the writer was looking for us to sympathize with Yolanda or not. He wrote that Yolanda spent her time in her “dorm size” prison room, but later in the article it says a 9x6 foot room. That she’s confined to her cell for 23 hours a day, and had no contact with other prisoners. She was allowed two visitors per weekend. They stated that she was eligible for parole in 2030, but it’s actually 2025. The article goes on to discuss her life inside the prison and how she’s got a “secret” that she’ll tell when she’s ready. Did you know that the Nueces County Courthouse braced for around 5000 Selena fans for Yolanda’s bond hearing, but thankfully only around 20 showed up. Police stayed busy dealing with the 30+ reporters and photographers that came to cover the story. Extra security was hired to keep Yolanda safe due to the multiple death threats against her. Unfortunately Selena’s design label stopped production in 2002, but Suzette was still very successful at running the boutiques. Selena’s Sears and JC Penney clothing lines sold over $10 million worth of clothing in its first year, and Sears requested a children’s line. Did you know that on this date in 1995, a bunch of people heard that in two days (May 18th) Yolanda’s attorneys were going to ask the court for a bond reduction hearing, and they began picking outside the Nueces County jail. Some of them carried signs that demanded a 140 year prison sentence. The picketers hoped that Yolanda could see them, but the prison officials said that she couldn’t. However, other inmates on the inside could see them and began holding up their own signs to the windows demanding justice. Some just demanded to get their hands on Yolanda. Because the picketers outside were creating a disturbance inside the jail, police came and asked them to move along. They left but threatened to return the next day. Did you know that while Abraham told the jury that yes, he did indeed pull Selena out of school in the 8th grade, he made certain she received a quality education. He told the jury that he talked to school administrators and they discussed alternative methods for Selena to continue her education. Abraham told the jury that the school superintendent recommended correspondence school, and suggested one from Chicago. He said Selena graduated from the correspondence school, with honors. At the time of her death she was taking correspondence courses in business. Did you know that in October 1995, a woman named Donell Hill of Houston painted a portrait of Selena that he called Selena’s Silent Song. The painting depicted Selena surrounded by skulls, with the hands of God grasping Selena’s throat with white roses, and was put on display in a Houston for an event called The Gift Of Death. Selena’s parents were very upset with the title of the painting so the artist renamed it to Silent Song, but Selena’s family was still upset at how she was shown in the painting. The artist, in his infinite wisdom thought it would be a good idea to send an invitation to the event to Selena’s parents, along with a copy of the painting. Abraham filed a lawsuit, but the parties reached an agreement. The artist could sell the painting (asking price was $8500.00) but it could not be reproduced and resold. I used to have a picture of the painting but I’ll be Billy be frigged if I can find it. The painting was ugly and I doubt anyone bought it, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Did you know that Selena’s 7th grade teacher, Marilyn Greer testified that she didn’t like Abraham and wasn’t going to pretend that she did. She referred to him as a “has been” whose own music career tanked so he chose to live vicariously through his children. She felt that Selena was too young to be performing in bars until 2am. Selena missed a lot of school because of the traveling and Mrs Greer said that was falling behind in her work. He stated on April 18, 1995 that he and the Quintanilla family were concerned about the book Selena: Phenomenal Life and Death of the Tejano Music Queen by Clint Richmond because the author never got permission from the Q family to write the book. Did you know that hotel maid Rosario Garza told reporters that on March 31, she arrived to work at 9 am and at the time of the shooting (11:40 am) she was across the hotel cleaning room 215. She stated that she positioned her maid cart so that it was blocking the door to the room, for protection she said but I’m not sure what she needed protection from. Anyway, as she was cleaning the room she said she heard a heated argument, but she assumed it was just children playing in the playground. That was until she heard the shot. She claimed that she walked across the hall into room 216 and out onto the balcony and witnessed Selena running away screaming with Yolanda directly behind her, with the gun upraised ready to fire a second time. She claimed that Yolanda looked “enraged” but three other witnesses said Yolanda looked calm and unemotional. Police eventually came to the room Rosario was cleaning and told her to close the door and not open it until the police came and got her for her statement. Rosario was so distraught from what she’d witnessed that she had to seek therapy, which Days Inn paid for. Did you know that speaking of Chris’s house, his auctioneer wanted him to put images of Selena on the flyers and advisements to make it more tempting for potential buyers, but Chris said no. The house was auctioned off rather than a traditional real estate listing. Potential buyers were asked to put a $100 deposit down on the house to weed out the curiosity seekers thinking that Selena had lived in the house. The auction was held on November 15, 1998 and viewing of the home was done by appointment only. Chris stated he didn’t want the house address public because he wanted to sell the house as quietly as possible, and because he was still living in the house at the time. Did you know that on May 30, 1995, 30,000 fans paid tribute to Selena in Houston to raise money for an educational fund and scholarship set up by Selena herself before her death. Nine well known Tejano bands performed, as well as playing some of Selena’s music. All the proceeds went to the Selena Foundation to promote educational causes. This person felt Selena was far above Madonna, and that they cringed on what a dishonor to Selena’s memory it was. Did you know that Judge Westergren told Yolanda that he wanted her to appear in court in regular street clothes, as opposed to the usual orange jumpsuits. The reason was because he was afraid if she wore the jumpsuit, she would be easily spotted and someone might make an attempt on her life. Security was extremely tight, bomb sniffing dogs were brought into Judge Westergrens office every 20 minutes, and the anyone not having business on the 5th floor of the courthouse weren’t allowed be there. On this day in 2019, the lawsuit was dismissed after Chris and Abraham settled their differences. On the day of her death, Angleton Amusement had completely sold their entire stock by 4pm. Distributors in Houston reported being depleted by 2pm on the 31st, literally minutes after the announcement of her death. Stores throughout Texas and New Mexico knew the demand for Selena merchandise would be very profitable, and it was. People were cashing in all over Texas. A counter was used to keep track of the traffic to the page with only 934 people logging in over a four day period. Which was actually a lot considering how new the home computer was in 1995. Most common servers to log into the site were CompuServ and America Online. The site was used for the Selena Foundation and would direct you to where you could donate and where local tribute bands would be performing. The site wasn’t created by the Q family, but rather by a man named Alan Wallace. Abraham stated he had no idea the website even existed until it was shown in local papers. The Corpus Christi Caller Times had a section called “sound off” and people could write in how they felt about things and see their words published in the paper. On June 22, 1995 someone, who apparently wished to remain anonymous wrote in that they felt if Selena had had a gun with her that day, she’d still be alive. Did you know that on this day in 1995, Selena’s family hosted an anti-violence campaign in Selena’s honor. The family teamed up with a San Antonio advertising agency. The official campaign (The Q family) had hundreds of tee shirts made, television and radio spots, billboards and newspapers to advertise the event, and they were unveiled at Q Productions a day later.
