ASIKWATI LOKUNJE | Just when we thought our football was a fixable matter, others decided to throw it in the sewer. In match number 176 in the National First Division fixture pitting Nyalinyali Celtics and Louis XIV was cancelled because of the unavailability of soccer balls in Manzini Club. Mr Ray Thwala, whom according to the match officials was the one responsible for a playable pitch and the availability of playing soccer balls (Stadium coordinator), was left in owe after learning that the match officials had after at least 30 minutes (from the scheduled Kick-off time) decided to call-off the match as there were still no match balls. When inspection was done, the pitch was also found swimming in a pond of human waste on one side. The grass too was a bit bigger than it should be for a playable pitch. Both teams were left devastated as they were told that the might be a rematch of this fixture. Team officials were swollen headed as they were left with no answers of compensations for their game preparation spendings. I AM A SOLDIER AND I WILL DIE ON THAT HILL | The story of one of the country's best players, Leon Manyisa during the final of the Ingwenyama Cup 2024. The late Coach Gcina 'Magiyane' Dlamini (MHSRIP) once described Manyisa as a player who fights to dictate the game. A player who wants the opponents to dance to his guitar. And a player who can make football very difficult for his opponents. Now, Many were left in awe when the young lad (Manyisa) signaled not to be ready to be subbed out during the final. It is acknowledgeable that there are all reasons to criticise his actions but again there are reasons to validate his actions. A true soldier is a winner after giving his all. At this point, the young man felt he still had a lot to give on the pitch and indeed most spectators saw eye to eye with him as they opted for another sacrifice instead of him. In the pitch, Leon made Green Mamba's normal game a fairytale, he refused to see them play good football in the middle and he was strong and solid with his marking and tussles. Often times he ignited Swallows' attack, allowing the likes of Neliswa 'Tiger' Dlamini more time in the other half. He played like a soldier until after his substitution confirmed where Green Mamba was trapped as they began to make meaningful movements in the middle. This is by no means near disrespecting the coaches' decision nor to condone such an absurd behaviour in football, but to just highlight the silver lining on this dark cloud. Players of Manyisa's calibre should be protected and well groomed for they are capable of being the pillar of our football and a good role model to upcoming players. He has a never die spirit, he refuses to lose and he fights to contribute the best for his team. GREATNESS REWARDED WITH GREATNESS | It hasn't gone unnoticed that in a sport dominated by men, a female referee was given an opportunity to call the shots in a game of such a magnitude. Letticia Viana, the Eswatini female referee was the main referee for the Sincephetelo MVA Fund Ingwenyama Cup finals 2024. She rewarded those who appointed her for this duty with GREATNESS. It is common that the loosing side will see a mistake if not two which costed them the game from the referee hence this piece might attract such energy. Nonetheless, Viana was on fleek. She was very decisive and spot on with her decisions. Her level of concentration in the pitch is one tool that helps her not to be intimidated by fans harassing her from the stands. Her movements and runs were approximate as in most times she was found in the right position to see everything in most actions. She applied the law correctly and managed the game well. To anyone with an argument, they will have to raise instances where the referee either broke the law or took an unlawful decision to favour any of the teams. At some point she even went against her assistant just to make sure they do justice in their decisions. Let us give her the praise for this one and we hope to see more improved performances of this sort from all our referees.
