April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and we will boost enforcement efforts, stopping anyone texting and driving. Cell phone use — specifically, texting, talking, and social media use — has become the most common distraction. Your safety is worth more than any notification. Don't let distractions steal your focus while driving. #WaukeganPolice #ItsNotAGame #Waukegan #PayAttentionOrPayUp #JustDrive

3/29/2024, 3:39:07 PM

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes on our roads today. Throughout April, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for texting and driving and other traffic violations. Your attention is your most valuable asset while driving. Protect it by keeping distractions out of sight and out of mind. #WaukeganPolice #JustDrive #Waukegan #PayAttentionOrPayUp #ItsNotAGame

3/27/2024, 3:00:31 PM

In recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Waukegan Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across the state. Throughout April, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for texting and driving and other traffic violations. Between 2012 and 2021, approximately 32,000 lives were lost in crashes involving distracted drivers. Everyone has the potential for distracted driving crashes, but those between the ages of 16 and 24 are especially at risk. If you need to text, pull over to a safe location, or if you have a passenger, consider appointing a “designated texter.” Whatever the solution, don’t text and drive. In Illinois, using your phone in anything other than hands-free mode is dangerous and illegal. Pay attention or pay the price. The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. #WaukeganPolice #ItsNotAGame #Waukegan #JustDrive #PayAttentionOrPayUp

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and many Illinoisans will be celebrating with parades and parties featuring green beer and cocktails. To remind motorists of the dangers of drunk driving and to help keep our streets safe, the Waukegan Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation for a stepped-up traffic safety campaign. St. Patrick’s Day can be a dangerous one on America’s roads due to increased alcohol consumption and drunk driving. There were 272 lives lost in drunk-driving crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday between 2017 and 2021. In addition to looking for alcohol and cannabis impaired drivers, the Waukegan Police Department will be stepping up seat belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving and all traffic laws will be strictly enforced. Whether you’re attending a party, hosting friends or going out to a bar, keep safety at the forefront of your day and night. When it’s time to leave, make sure your designated driver is sober. Remember that walking impaired can also be dangerous, so designate a sober friend to walk home with you. Designated drivers: Be alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs. Other important tips: • Drunk or high, it doesn’t matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. • Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and plan to get your friend home safely. • Always buckle up! The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT. #WaukeganPolice #StPatricksDay #Waukegan #DriveSoberOrGetPulledOver #ClickItOrTicket

Today is National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day! 💙 On this special day we would like to show gratitude towards SROs and the impact they have on our students, schools, and communities. The SRO assignment is unique in that these officers fill a three-part role - they serve as informal mentors or counselors, law educators and law enforcement officers to support the students and communities they serve. They are valuable and essential members of the education and law enforcement community! We would like to say #ThankYou to our very own SROs - Officer Brian Falotico and Officer Angela DiVirgilio! Both work closely with the Waukegan Public Schools, one at each Waukegan High School. Also, a special thank you to all the other SRO’s across the nation. We appreciate all that you do! #WPS60 #WaukeganPolice #SRO #Waukegan #WHS #ThankYou

Congratulations to School Resource Officer Falotico for receiving the Waukegan High School's Shout-Out! Did you know that School Resource Officers (SROs) fulfill a variety of roles? They prevent and respond to school-based crime, they foster positive relationships among law enforcement, educators, and youth, and also help to promote a positive school climate. Officer Falotico goes above and beyond for the many students he encounters daily. His positive contributions not only benefit the teenagers as they grow into adults, but also their teachers, families, and the community at large! Thank you, Officer Falotico! #WaukeganPolice #WPS60 #ShoutOut #Waukegan #ThankYou #WHS

Super Bowl parties are some of the most attended gatherings among friends and family, so keeping safety in mind is essential. Make the greatest play of the night by designating a sober driver. • Drunk or high, it doesn’t matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. • Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take their keys and help them get home safely. • Always buckle up! The Super Bowl enforcement campaign is part of the Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by IDOT. #WaukeganPolice #SuperBowl #Waukegan #DriveSoberOrGetPulledOver #BuckleUp

The Waukegan Police Department is reminding football fans that designated drivers are the best defense against the dangers of impaired driving. If your Super Bowl celebration involves alcohol or cannabis, plan for a ride home with a sober driver. Fans don’t let fans drive drunk or high! Congratulations to Officer Carrillo for being selected as Waukegan Police Department’s Employee of the Month for December 2023. In the nomination, Commander Garcia wrote, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 47% of Illinois motor vehicle fatalities involve alcohol.” For this month, I believe there is an officer that is making a big impact in curving this extreme danger. The officer that I feel is deserving of being and receiving the officer of the month award, due to her hard work and dedication in keeping the citizens of Waukegan safe is Ofc. Carrillo. In the past 5 months, Ofc. Carrillo has written 10 DUIs with 6 being in the months of December and November. Ofc. Carrillo also makes herself accessible whenever her fellow officers, or even officers from other divisions need assistance or advice in conducting a DUI investigation. I would like to note, that DUI investigations are very complex and the reports are some of the most time consuming reports you can have. It is well known that you are more likely to testify longer and be scrutinized during a DUI trial then trials involving other crimes. Ofc. Carrillo displays great professionalism on these investigations and her ability to speak Spanish is invaluable whether it’s her investigation or she is assisting other officers with the task of translating during these complex cases. Her efforts on a daily basis should be commended as it serves as an example on how serious every officer should take this extreme danger. I believe Ofc. Carrillo goes above and beyond her regular duties in trying to keep our citizens safe. For these reasons, I feel that Ofc. Carrillo should be the Officer of the Month for the Month of December.” Officer Carrillo, thank you for your dedication and service to the City of Waukegan! #WaukeganPolice #Congratulations #Waukegan #EmployeeOfTheMonth
