Echo II class submarines: For NATO the whole 34 ECHO were quite close as to share the same identifier, but for the Soviet Union they were two well separated classes, albeit sharing a lot together, as shown by their respective project numbers 659 and 675, they also diverged on many points, starting with the final missiles adopted (the much better SS-N-12), and how many: Eight under six. They were also hundreds of modifications across the board. Despite of this, most of the previous design was repeated. Also, unlike the ECHO I that stayed in service as SSGN all along their career until the end of the cold war whereas their forebears were quickly converted as SSNs. Weekly Update ! Echo I class submarines: The controversial 1st generation of Soviet nuclear-powered submarines is illustrated well by the story of the Project 659 boats (NATO ECHO I). Some of these could deserve the title also of "widowmakers" (after the November and Hotel) and for good reasons. In this strategic duo indeed, Project 658 (HOTEL) ballistic submarines were to be complementary to the Project 659 boats (ECHO), first Soviet subs to carry cruise missiles. These were of the crude, 1st gen SSN-3C "shaddock" (P-5 "Pyatyorka"), subsonic, bukly, innacurate, but tipped with powerful nuclear warheads. Their tactical role was to emerge close to US West coast shores from their Pacific base, fire a volley of six, and then submerge and disappear again. They were to nuke most valuable industrial centers and factories in case of war, notably the main Boeing factories at Seattle. The major issue with the design (in addition to the poor missiles), was the top down choice to rush production at all cost, with the five first boats built at the inexperienced Komsomolsk on Amur yard and forced to use the abysmal 1st gen reactors of Project 627 SSNs (the infamous November class). As the result they had a short service life plagued with incidents, between reactor cooling leakages and fierce fires in their complicated powerplant, some deadly for dozens of sailors like in K-122. They were also converted soon into SSNs and retired in the late 1980s. This marks an increase of over 100% in production demand. To meet this ambitious goal, it's crucial that we expand and strengthen the resilience of the submarine industrial base. This expansion is not just about meeting construction demands; it's about supporting tens of thousands of high-skill, high-wage jobs across our nation. Despite experiencing a steady decline over the past 30 years, there's a silver lining. We can reverse this trend with sustained effort, including supplemental supplier funding and stable, predictable submarine production. A steady production cadence of 1 + 2 is within our reach, ensuring the industrial base is robust and ready for the challenges ahead. Twenty years ago today, USS Michigan (SSBN 727) began conversion to a guided missile submarine. For 21 years, Michigan made strategic deterrent patrols as a ballistic missile submarine, until Navy requirements and nuclear treaty terms reduced the need for 18 Ohio-class submarines. The first submarine designed and built to launch Regulus guided missiles, USS Halibut (SSGN/SSN 587), was commissioned #OnThisDay in 1960! Halibut's purpose-built design included a large missile hangar that created distinctive bulge on her forward end, giving Halibut the appearance of a snake that just swallowed its prey. Two months after commissioning, Halibut became the first nuclear-powered submarine to launch a guided missile. The following year, in February 1961, she began the first of seven deterrent patrols. As more ballistic missile submarines entered service, offering the enormous advantage of submerged missile launches, the Regulus guided missile program was phased out. Halibut found a second life after Regulus's end — in 1965, after a major overhaul, Halibut began service as an attack submarine. You may or may not know, but when sailors are out on a Submarine, they have very limited communication. All communication is done via email. As you can imagine, the emails do not always have the opportunity to go through in the short window for broadcasting. This can mean days, even weeks, of no communication from your Sailor. As this is my second go round for deployment, I have developed strategies for coping with the lack of communication. 1. Never look at the news. The only thing that looking at the news is going to do is to make you anxious. The news should also be considered propaganda. Any news on the boat is carefully curated to support the mission. 2. Keep yourself busy. Any activity that will keep you away from the computer or phone will do. I have noticed that when I do not have something to do, I tend to sit around in a state of paralysis, constantly refreshing my inbox. This is not healthy. 3. Continue to send emails even during this time. I write my husband an email once a day as I am getting ready for bed. I know that he will eventually get it, and many times, I will receive multiple emails in one day replying to all of my previous emails. Not everyone chooses to do it this way. You should email as often as you are comfortable. 4. Talk with other spouses going through the same thing you are. Most people can not begin to imagine the hardship that comes with deployed life. The good thing is that the submarine community is very tight knit. We are all going through it and it is nice to be able to vent to someone who understands. Be careful not to dwell too much on the negativity. These are just a few of the things that I make sure to incorporate into my daily life. #SubSunday: The crew of guided missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729) and U.S. Marines from Task Force 61/2 conduct a launch and recovery training exercise from USS Georgia, March 2022. Originally a ballistic missile submarine, Georgia was converted into a guided missile sub in the mid-2000s, rejoining the fleet in March 2008 in her new role as an SSGN. As part of her conversion, Georgia's two forward-most missile tubes were permanently converted to lock-out chambers that allow clandestine insertion and retrieve of Special Operations Forces (SOF) personnel. Each lock-out chamber can also accommodate a dry deck shelter to further support SOF equipment and operations. Between 2002 to 2008, the U.S. Navy converted USS Ohio, USS Florida, USS Michigan, and USS Georgia into SSGNs at lower cost and in less time than building new platforms. USS Ohio paved the way, beginning its conversion first — 21 years ago today! — at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. USS Ohio (SSBN/SSGN 726) celebrates 42 years today! The “always first” submarine was commissioned #OnThisDay in 1981 as a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). Seventeen more Ohio-class subs followed over the next nine years. Ohio conducted strategic deterrent patrols as an SSBN for the first 21 years of her service life. In late 2002, she began a three-year conversion into a guided missile submarine at PSNS & IMF on the Waterfront.
