On November 4, I will be in Monterey VA for the Appalachian Mountaineer gravel event. I rode the 69 mile Mountaineer course in 2021, unaware I was dealing with a 5cm tumor on my pancreas. Despite that, it was a transformative experience. Gutting out the seven mile ascent up Bald Knob and surviving the nerve wracking descent was the highlight, but the whole ride was just incredible. I had intended to ride last year, but I was selected to participate in a clinical trial on short notice and had to withdraw. Unfortunately, my journey with pancreatic cancer has taken a turn this year and I’m just not able to toe the line for 2023. I still wanted to participate however so I reached out to Gordon @quadsworth and we came up with the idea of the “Work Harder It’s Not Chemo” belt. We are still hashing out the criteria, but the idea is we want to recognize the rider who finishes this event best, if not necessarily first. I’m particularly interested in gathering intel on the field before, during and after the ride, so we can make the best decision on who deserves this awesome belt. Presenting the “Work Hard It’s Not Chemo” Award. Many thanks to the @theappalachianjourney and Gordon Wadsworth @quadsworth for allowing me to give back to your event and continue to participate. My one and only Mountaineer was a memorable and transformative experience. Still not sure how I made it 7 1/2 miles up Bald Mountain without ever putting a foot down once (unfortunately put down more than a foot on the descent though 😹😹😹). I rode the entire 69 miles of that incredible gravel route unaware I already had a growing mass on my pancreas, but that just shows you anything is possible if you train, focus and stay positive. We’re working on the criterion for this award, but I guarantee you it’s gonna hurt, but hey it’s not chemo and the winner will earn it. A lot of things can happen between now and then, but if I’m physically able, I intend to be there to present in person. One year ago this weekend I rode the 2022 MonsterCross and crushed my own personal best route time by almost 13:00. Two days later I went for an abdominal CT scan to diagnose some nagging gastrointestinal distress I’d had since the first of the year, and the next morning I got the call that would put my life on a different path. It’s been quite a year, and frankly I was not overly optimistic about my prospects in those early days. And yet here we are a year later. In the months leading up to that race I was training like a maniac, eating like a horse and I couldn’t figure out why I kept losing weight. Today I’m 20 pounds heavier, and aside from the nagging effects of a COVID diagnosis this month I feel better than I did that morning. Yes, ten months of chemo has left me with neuropathy in my hands and feet and done a real number on my balance. I went down hard on the Seven the last two times I rode outdoors, so the days of MonsterCross are probably behind me. But getting the right treatment at @vcumassey stopped the growth and spread of my pancreatic cancer and put me in a place where I’m about to have surgery to remove my pancreas tumor and hopefully get a shot at long-term health and wellness. One of the things I resolved to do back in the dark days of early 2022 was to use my time, however long it might be, to help others who are suffering from this disease. I’ve never wavered from that resolution, so I’m asking my friends to join Team Cookin’ Up A Cure one more time for the @pancan PurpleStride Richmond 2023 Walk. I’m going to keep on surviving and thriving, and as long as I do I’ll keep on supporting my fellow survivors, their families, loved ones and friends. Welcome to Team Cookin’ Up A Cure’s IG page! So glad you took the time to visit. I created this page to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer and the toll this disease takes on patients, their families, friends and loved ones. Three days after racing the 2022 MonsterCross at Pocahontas State Park, I found out I had a walnut sized mass on my pancreas which was subsequently determined to be an adenocarcinoma. I was shocked. I had just turned 60 last September, but I was in perhaps the best shape I’d been in 40 years. I’d been training especially hard for months and feeling strong. Shortly thereafter my diagnosis I began treatment at the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond VA. I’m currently undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy to reduce the tumor size and maximize the possibility of surgical removal. As crazy as this may sound, I actually feel fortunate. Sharon and I have a nice home, financial security, good jobs that allow us to work around my illness and we live 25 minutes away from a world class cancer treatment facility. Unfortunately, many suffers of this disease are not as fortunate. So I wanted to do some thing for those who need a hand and Team Cooking Up A Cure was born! I’ve got a lot of ideas bouncing around on how we’re going to help, and a few of them are already in progress. First of all, we have created a team to participate in the PurpleStride 2022 Richmond walk to end pancreatic cancer on April 30, 2022. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, we’ve raised almost $11,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). PanCAN helps pancreatic cancer patients, survivors and families through one-on-one support, funding for research on early detection advances in treatment and raising awareness of this disease which is the third leading cause of dancer deaths in the United States.
