Over the next few days, we will be spending some time focusing on physical wellness. The physical wellness pillar acts as a foundation for our overall well-being and can impact our quality of life and if we are thriving or declining. The state of our physical body encompasses an interconnected relationship with the other pillars of well-being. Caring for our physical body can include: - Regular exercise - Proper nutrition - Adequate sleep - Stress management - Regular health checkups - Doctor - Dentist - Optometrist - Massages - Maintaining personal hygiene - Spending time outdoors - Honoring your individuality - Listening to your body and nurturing its needs - Limit harmful substances Some suggested activities to nurture our physical wellness can include: - Walking, yoga, cycling, swimming, strength training, dance, or any type of movement that you enjoy! - Walk to work or school - Add more fruit or vegetables into your meals - Try a new healthy recipe - Drink extra water - Limit sugar and processed foods - Pay attention to posture - Set up a sleep routine to encourage a good night sleep - Get 7-9 hours of sleep - Practice meditation or breathing exercise to reduce stress - Make that overdue appointment with your (insert health care professional here!) Over the next few days, we invite you to spend some time focusing on environmental wellness. This wellness pillar encompasses our relationship to our environment(s). Consider that our environment has multiple layers. Our inner environment (thoughts and emotions), our outer environment (home, work, school), and of course the natural environment. We are impacted and have the ability to impact, either positively or negatively, the environment and space that we occupy. To care for and acknowledge our environment(s) it is necessary to recognize those impacts. Take some time to notice how your environment affects your inner thoughts and feelings. How can you adjust your outer environment to bring a sense of peace to your inner environment. How can you honor and respect the natural environment and its importance in our survival? Some suggested activities to nurture our environmental wellness can include bringing awareness to one or all the layers of our environment through the following activities: - Paying attention to our inner dialogue - Reflecting on how our environment makes us feel - Caring for our physical body - Tackling small jobs around the house - organizing clutter - cleaning out a closet - making repairs - Redecorating a room - Tending to yard work - Planting flowers or trees - Reduce, reuse, recycle & recover - Picking up garbage - Conserving water - Connect with nature - Acknowledge environmental issues - Reduce pollution As many of you may be heading out to spend time in nature for the long weekend consider leaving your environment in a better state then when you found it. Over the next few days we will be spending some time focusing on spiritual wellness. Spiritual wellness encompasses finding meaning and purpose in our lives. While it is often thought of as involving religion and spiritual practices, it is broader than this container. And specific and personal to each individual. Understanding this pillar involves taking note of your core values and what is most important to you and honoring these things throughout your day. Some questions to ask yourself as you explore this pillar. What makes you feel inspired, how do you feel connected, what matters to you most. A component of spiritual wellness is exploring your core values and how they relate to your daily life. Over the next few days we will be spending some time focusing on emotional wellness. Caring for ourselves and our emotional wellness requires mindful attention on acknowledging, expressing, validating and effectively managing our feelings. Keeping this pillar in mind as you complete the remainder of the challenge that emotional wellness impacts and is impacted by all of the other pillars. As we move though our day we are constantly receiving sensations throughout our body that can give us important information about our state of well-being. It is important to acknowledge these messages and respond and adjust ourselves in a way that resonates. In a non-judgmental approach, take a moment to look at how you are socially connected and how these connections make you feel. - Is there an existing social connections that require attention? A relationship with a friend, a family member or have you been active in your usual communities? This can look like calling to check in, setting a necessary boundary, or setting a long overdue date!
