“Cristiane ‘Crissy’ Wolfe is a self-confessed ‘deal junkie.’ “‘I love negotiating and closing deals,’ says the Atlanta attorney, who is a partner at Krevolin & Horst, LLC, where she regularly represents middle market companies in multimillion-dollar transactions, on both the buy and sell side. She thrives on the rush from working deep into the night, trying to get the final details of a deal in place. “When Melinda Bialzik was feeling the mounting pressure of doing well on her first end-of-semester exams at Harvard Law, she had an epiphany: She shouldn’t think her entire future was riding on how well she did. “’I decided I would just do the best I could and enjoy the ride,’ says the Milwaukee attorney. ‘I realized that if I didn’t succeed in this very narrow way, there were a million different ways that I could have a successful life and career. There isn’t a singular path. Just because this is what was in my mind and looks good on paper, doesn’t mean this is the only path for me. That’s a hard thing to listen to and accept sometime.’ “Her new perspective worked. The pressure lifted and she went on to earn her law degree from one of the best law schools in the country. “The irony is that when she was younger, she always swore she wouldn’t be a lawyer. She saw how hard her father worked as an attorney in business litigation and understood well how stressful the work could be. “It’s been roughly 50 years since women began entering the legal profession in large numbers. “In 1960, women comprised only 3.5 percent of the enrollees at American Bar Association-approved law schools; in 1970, they comprised 8.5 percent; another decade later, they were up to 33.6 percent, according to figures from the ABA. “Decade by decade, the percentage continued to climb until the number of women enrolled in U.S. law schools actually overtook men eight years ago, and that gap has continued to widen ever since. “The neuroscience program at the University of Minnesota encouraged undergrads to do research, which was uncommon and was one of the reasons Rebecca had chosen the school. She embraced the expectation by working in a neuroendocrinology lab where her focus centered on biological clock rhythms. Her senior thesis, however, explored neural regeneration in stroke patients, a subject that held particular personal interest for her after her grandfather suffered a massive stroke that left him partially paralyzed for the remainder of his life. “It was while she was working in the lab that a colleague first recognized a latent tremor in Rebecca’s right hand.
