When starting out in stage combat, the rhythm of a fight tends to be rather stilted, trying to work out how to move hands and feet at the same time but in different ways. This leads students to work within "false time", using their feet to lead what will become a slower fight (as the hands are faster than the feet). Eventually, one will be able to work under the concept of "true time", which allows hands to lead a swifter motion, adjusting in real time to initiate sequences of movements to land or defend an attack.
