Details of this innovative initiative were presented at the event by Mr. Muhammad Shahid Shafiq of the Sindh Judicial Academy, Mr. Sabghatullah Patoli, Incharge of CAMC at the High Court of Sindh, and Mrs. Sadaf Abbas, Mediator at CAMC. The debut edition of Pakistan International Disputes Weekend (PIDW) 2023, Asia’s premier legal and industrial conference, made rounds internationally as a groundbreaking conference for ‘reviewing, reflecting and reviving’ the global disputes terrain. Held almost a year ago in Lahore, Pakistan, on the 20th and 21st of May 2023, the rippling effects of the conference are still widely felt with recent developments in the disputes landscape and a generally conducive environment for ADR in the country. A few key takeaways from PIDW’23: PIDW’23 marked the unique gathering of the esteemed five high courts of Pakistan, various public sector organizations, international ADR centers, foreign delegates, law firms, and various stakeholder representatives from Pakistan’s industrial sector. This collective presence at PIDW showcased the collaborative commitment to enhancing a robust and fair dispute resolution system in Pakistan. PIDW’23 was the launchpad for the Arbitration Act 2024, and the CIArb Pakistan Branch produced the first draft of the Arbitration Act 2023 at PIDW’23. Under the guidance of the luminary of legal field and Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, Honorable Mr. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, this Act is now tabled with the National Assembly and aims to replace the 1940 Act with more modern and comprehensive legislation. PIDW’23 was the first step in transforming Pakistan’s image globally as an emerging hub for dispute resolution.
