"It’s all about visual communication, expressing something that others can interpret and come to understand. Collaboration with others makes my work stronger." - Christopher Griffin Griffin is inspired by ancient artwork on cave walls, children’s art and random markings on concrete sidewalks, roads and buildings. He finds the immediacy, confidence and lack of pretence in these markings appealing, and emulates their chaotic beauty in the surfaces of his own work which he calls ‘visual noise’. It's in these scribbles, gestural markings and graphic accidents that mirror our hectic, image-laden society—often in bird, fish and animal motifs representing the pure, innocent and spiritual—that Griffin finds his inspiration. A patch of sidewalk can express everything he strives for in his work: colour, texture, pattern, line quality—as well as randomness, freeness and freshness. With similar 'visually complete moments' in mind he challenges himself to extend these experiences. For example, when mixing oil paint to imitate the colour and texture of asphalt no longer made sense to him, he began to incorporate real asphalt in his work leading to exploration of mixing asphalt with other mediums, directly applying wet asphalt to a sidewalk, then lifting a print from that onto a primed canvas. The preciousness of a blank canvas is thus removed from the equation, allowing Griffin to create more freely. Playing and being in the moment are important aspects of his work. Everything he does — from sculpting in concrete to painting murals—informs other practices and in turn helps them resonate deeper. These contrasts in scale and purpose continue to keep him interested and curious. Working from life with a dynamic model, concepts of anatomy and technique will be explored in the bright airy seaside Sunbury studio. Millar’s enthusiasm, sure-handed draftsmanship, and tested teaching methods promise to make this a very fun and useful workshop. Millar studied drawing, painting and anatomy at the National Academy of Art and the Art Students League of New York. His studio practice focuses on animals, landscape and anatomy, and perceptions of natural history. He teaches life drawing & art direction for animation at Sheridan College in Oakville, ON. His work with film director Guillermo del Toro can be viewed onscreen in the features The Shape of Water and Nightmare Alley, the Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and del Toro’s upcoming feature adaptation of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’.
