Frankenstein Unbound / Munchies / Stepmonster (1990 / 1987 / 1993) ... All three of these I believe I've shared absurdly recently but I can't even recall. Frankenstein Unbound had to go up cause it was Roger Corman's final film as director. Based on a story by the incredible Brian Aldiss, the movie features a different spin on the Shelley classic, throwing time travel, Shelley herself, and wantin disregard for the prime directive into the mix. Practicals on Frankie and the Bride were handled by Nick Dudman, Suzanne Reynolds, et al. Munchies was Roger's budget go at Gremlins. Being everyone else was getting in on that, it seemed only logical. The movie is a bit friskier than its peers as the Munchies themselves are quite rude 🤣🤣🤣 It is intended to be kid-friendly, but there's certainly some awesomely questionable content in there. Look at that brilliant poster, for instance 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The Munchies puppets were created by Michael W. Moore. Yeah, I def did Stepmonster recently so I'll be brief. This is a balls-awesome kiddie flick that manages to be good, clean, fun and provide younglings with a taste of horror. They did a phenomenal job putting the thing together and I highly recommend it. Humanoids from the Deep (1996) ... And finally (but to be continued), the remake of Humanoids, one of many made for Showtime as part of a TV presentation called Roger Corman Presents. For the most part, I actually kinda dig this version more. Honestly, the only thing really missing from this one is the aesthetic of the period. Had this been the version of the movie released in 1980, it woulda been perfect. There's a new element introduced to the Humanoid modus operandi which eliminates the 'need' for graphic R-word scenes and there's far more tension to the end. While the film does use footage of Bottin's Humanoids from the first, most of the creature stuff is new and has undergone a cool redesign. They actually play around with the rubber beasties a bit more too. The hatchling actual gets up and runs around in a fun sequence and the full-grown beasties have a new tongue thing that they can launch out chameleo-style in order to snare hard-to-reach quarry!!! Roy Knyrim and Jerry Macaluso oversaw effects for this one with Michael Todd working creature stuff. Demon of Paradise (1987) ... Roger did also love to revisit and redo past pictures of his. The next stretch saw several of his efforts remade, some of them not long after they were originally created. Demon of Paradise is a Philippines-shot budget schlocker that functioned as a remake of sorts for the previously-posted Up from the Depths. As such, it has elements of a Jaws knock-off but with the added benefits of a soggy, bipedal monster. I don't like it quite as much but it works just fine. I still haven't got the faintest idea who did the practical work on this lovely boy. If anybody can help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated!!! Humanoids from the Deep (1980) ... This period in Roger's career went full exploitation and gave us some of the greatest posters... and equally memorable poster lies!!! Thankfully, this movie does actually live up to its poster, tho I must warn, as per usual, that it gets pretty ugly. The Humanoid modus operandi will be problematic for some people: The creatures are all about putting folks in the family way by force. The dreaded R-word thing thus makes numerous appearances. Hunanoids are quite rude. The rubber is facking great and cult iconic, tho, and the movie and its aesthetic are kinda quintessential period AWESOME. The practical work was handked by Rob Bottin, with Roger George, Chris Walas, Margaret Prentice, et al. Steve Johnson's hand is inside that newborn critter and every time an Humanoid has something rude done to it, it's Steve inside the suit. Up from the Depths (1979) ... Now we're talkin' my bag. Up from the Depths is an expressly more apparent Jaws clone than Piranha for sure, but the flick still musters up an unique take and a great bloody time. Another fun experience worth watching on its own terms. Playful humour and blessed exploitation abounds!!! My favourite bit has this bloke croaking on a boat while hunting the big ol' catfish thing and his friends toss his carcass overboard, dragging it behind them as a lure 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Practicals for the film were handled by Sandy Hill, Robert Short, and Chris Walas. Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961) ... A bit more frisk to this one as we get closer to the almighty bikini movie and liberation from the stinky Code. Also, an even more ridiculous rubber monster that I, again, love to pieces. Creature from the Haunted Sea has some rude stuff going down and being blamed on a legendary sea monster. Imagine the surprise when the thing turns out to be more than myth!!! This creature is usually recognised by a certain generation due to its being featured in the intro to Malcolm in the Middle. It Conquered the World (1956) ... We're gonna continue our leap-frogging thru the decades in tribute to Roger Corman cause, quite frankly, we wouldn't have Rubber Monsters of Schlockland without him and it is indeed right and salutary. WTF good are we if we can't flood the damn place with Corman?! Thanks for making it a fine celebration. I'm happy to see so much love going round. It Conquered the World is yet another schlock staple. In this earlier period, Roger had the incomparable Samuel Z. Arkoff and American International along with him. Their respective mantras tended to be aligned and are 100% RMoS approved. It's a formula to be reckoned with and only required the breaking of the Code to be utilised in full force (we weren't there yet in the 50s). I love this film's great big ridiculous rubber monster to pieces, man, as well the additional rubber. Practical effects for the picture were handled by Paul Blaisdell and Bob Burns, with Karl Brainard serving as prop man. Frankenstein Unbound (1990) ... Gonna have to shoot the entire day's output out in a rapid-fire sequence cause a friend came by out of the blue. Apologies in advance for the spam!!! I covered The Big Cube today over on the @schlocklandmarathon and that got me thinking about mind-altering chemicals which, in turn, got me thinking about Brian Aldiss and Barefoot in the Head... and that leads us to Frankenstein Unbound. This flick, an adaptation of an Aldiss retelling of the Shelley classic, is, to date, the last film Roger Corman personally helmed. Willow (1988) ... I really felt the desire to do a Willow spread again. What can I say? The movie stuck with its target audience like freakin' magic!!! The film's world and practical beasties are bloody cool AF and most certainly provided nightmare fuel for some. Nick Dudman and co. saw to a lot of the rubber work. Phil Tippett took on the big ol' Eborsisk dragon. This thing was named after critics Siskel and Ebert as a rather unflattering jab. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets / The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Eight ... Alright, Harry's turn to lead the grand finale. Sorry, Pete!!! The second Potter flick went pretty hard on the practical side of things and I had a magnificent time with it. Much as I love how the series grew with its intended audience, I dig how innocent and British quirky the first few are. Pictured above are the saxy saxy practical Aragog, an epic hollering mandrake (they're probably my favourites), the big dirty rubber basilisk head that was used for a few shots, and the gorgeous, very practical Fawkes animatronic. Nick Dudman and his crew took care of all of these. The second Lord of the Rings book got the treatment in '02 as well, treating us to the first big battle as the mighty Saruman and his legions attempted to crush Rohan in The Enemy's name. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring / Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Eight ... The grand finale for 2001 was always gonna be Peter Jackson's adaptation of the first novel in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Despite noticeable differences, this thing was so beautiful, man, and I especially love how all of a sudden there were an whole lot more people to talk with about the books I'd loved for so long. It was a banger and we couldn't wait for more. Here are various orcs and Lurtz the Uruk. Some had a bit of digital assistance but they were mostly practical, this lot. The ever-wonderful Weta Workshop on this rubber stuff, as well as Middle-Earth-shattering digital. An adaptation of J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book also came in '01. I didn't see it till a few years ago when I watched the whole series in one sitting. A now ex called me an horrible person cause I'd never seen them so I accepted her challenge 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, they are facking great. In particular, I love how they grew along with their targeted audience. I regret that I wasn't the age of Harry and friends when they came out. I still have to read the books, tho. Apparently, I'm a Ravenclaw thru and thru. Anyway, dafuq was I talking about again? Oh, yes, the rubber. Here are some practical goblins. Warwick Davis is all over this. The man portrayed the head goblin, voiced Verne Troyer's character, and also played a professor. Galaxy Quest / Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Seven ... Now Galaxy Quest is a true facking classic. A fun excursion for fans of Trek and the like featuring a stupidly awesome cast and a plethora of funny bits and tasty effects. Stan Winston's crew handled these. The Thermians have a special place in my heart cause I'm never far away from thoughts of intergalactic coitus. Tony Shalhoub totally did the genital jitterbug with one of these squiddy things 🤣🤣🤣 Spielberg had wanted a more traditional grey alien design for the Thermians, but relented when Stan's team already had these built and were VERY attached to them. They are a Simon Bisley design with ultimate practical realisation headed up by Shane Mahan. The Star Wars prequel was the bloody talk of the year tho and it was an incredibly exciting time to be a fan. It's a cool thing to look back at. I've warmed up to the thing quite a bit in the time since we actually found out it wasn't as great as we all were expecting. I cherish it for all my Gungi homies and for f*cking Watto. Lots of cutting-edge digital stuff, but we did get some lovely practicals. Featured above are the gorg monger, the atrocious Yoda puppet (this was blessedly CGI-ed over in the blu-ray release), Yaddle (a youngy lady of Yoda's species), and the iconic Darth Maul. The Night Flier / Snoe White: A Tale of Terror / Stephen King's The Shining (1997) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Seven ... On the literary side of things... The adaptation of Stephen King's short story "The Night Flier is one righteous hammer of a sleeper jewel. King always has an interesting take on vampires and it tends to translate onto the screen fairly well. Tight atmosphere, groovy cast, and fackawesome rubber effects. These by Robert Kurtzman, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, and co. at KNB EFX. Def get around to uncovering this one. Most of you will definitely see the Snow White story a bit differently after the '97 horror version. This has both Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill. Definitely one of your greasier imaginings of the story, this version leans on the Grimm story's more horrific side, as its title would suggest, plus... surprises. Nick Dudman did the gnarly FX on Sigourney. The 90s were also REALLY about the almighty Stephen King TV miniseries. This year saw him, having never been happy with Kubrick's classic take, strive for a more faithful adaptation of The Shining. The result is certainly that, even if the miniseries isn't nearly as memorable. Rebecca De Mornay provides a, well, different Wendy Torrance and there is some pleasing rubber. Batman & Robin / Men in Black / The Fifth Element / Drive (1997) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Seven ... Some more junk in varying degrees on an higher level of good... Damned if Batman & Robin ain't just finally kinda growing on me. Man, it's still truly awful, but I just love Uma's Ivy (I adore Ivy in general) and the barrage of atrocious really is something that can kinda be admired. Plant Girl accompanied by a pile of practical vegetation, some of which were puppets. I dig the sneckplant the most. A rather sad representation of Bane shambles about behind her too. Work on the massive orchid puppet was overseen by Jim Beinke. Tony Gardner and co. contributed to animatronic work. Bane's make-up was designed and applied Brian Penikas. Ivy's greatly-appreciated costuming was designed by Ingrid Ferrin. Men in Black's still a good time, carrying on the alien fixation we had big time the previous year. Rick Baker and Cinovation populated the film's universe with some really fresh extraterrestrial designs that are some extremely fun curio. While digital work from ILM factored in to a good degreee, Cinovation also made the maquettes that they used to work over. The Fifth Element is one doozy of a bogus head-scratcher. An acquired taste for some, and instant cult cyberpunk classic to others, the movie is certainly heaping with epic designs of all kinds, encompassing every aspect of the damn thing. The practical Mangalore are my favourites, tho. FX on these guys were handled by Nick Dudman and co. Costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Gawd bless the French. Drive is a mostly rubberless action film, but the mighty Steve Wang helmed it, so he did give us a nice treat (as if the movie and everyone in it weren't awesome enough already). Walter the Eistein Frog is a fictional TV series that plays a couple times during the film. Judge Dredd / Tank Girl / Batman Forever / Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Seven ... I love Dredd '95, peeps. She's fun and she gets some things terribly right even if other things ended up terribly wrong. Stallone is kinda perfect... in the helmet tho. Dat scowl!!! Prosthetics were overseen by Nick Dudman. Joss Williams oversaw work on the ABC robut, with a team that included Michael Dunleavy, Rob Malos, Brian Morrison, Robbie Scott, Paul Taylor, and Peter White. Chris Cunningham, Paul Catling, Neill Gorton, and Michelle Taylor worked on Mean Machine. Sly's costume designed by Gianni Versace. Tank Girl wasn't as quick a success with me. After many, many attempts it's finally kinda worked its magic on me. I respect the team and Rachel Talalay. It's got hella character. Jet Girl for life. The roo doods were the work of Stan Winston's peeps while the armour suits were provided by Alterian. Yet another one that has charmed up considerably over the course of time is Batman Forever, Joel Schumacher's third entry in Tim Burton's Bats run. It plays more toward '60s Batman homage than anything and I find ut works. One can see Rick Baker's largely unused practical giant bat creaturevery briefly in the film's nightmare sequence or in greater detail in a sadly deleted scene. Two-Face was also modified from his test version (left). Baker's incredible work for the picture underwent many changes as the film took shape. And the OG MMPR movie, bucko!!! The film brought the then-current TV cast into a theatre-grade adventure and didn't re-use monsters or suits. So much great rubber sh*t to see. Studio Kite, Optic Nerve Studio, Criswell Productions, and Global Effects, Inc. all lent their might to these. Total Recall / Class of 1999 / Spaced Invaders / Frankenstein Unbound (1990) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Seven ... I'll probably be at this all fuggin' night. All six posts will be quadrupled today. Cut some big ones again, unfortunately. Forgiveness please 🤣🤣🤣 Total Recall is always hangin' around waiting to be posted. A radical take on its source material that turned out to surprisingly the better for such brash re-working (VERY arguably), the movie is brimming with memorable junk and splendid rubber. Rob Bottin blessed us with the latter. Class of 1999 is the sci-fi-inflected spiritual successor to Mark L. Lester's cult classic Class of 1984. It has epic knock-off Terminator effects but the movie is something quite exceptionally different. With a good vibe and playful cheese, it's one of my faves from the rental era. FX by Rick Stratton and All Effects Company. Spaced Invaders has these lovely, funny practical Martians and their expendable little robut buddy. She's a movie that can grab me on some days and not others. A better nostalgia piece than it is anything else, I suppose. Some great bits tho!!! FX by John Criswell and co., with Steve Wang rocking yet another fantastic paint job. Frankenstein Unbound is, to date, the last film Roger Corman personally helmed. The Return of Swamp Thing / Batman / The Toxic Avenger III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Six ... Well, obviously Return of Swampy is my favourite movie of all time. A couple others come really REALLY close, but this one's got some stuoid charm over me. A Wynorski picture for kids, it's funny, has an awesome feel, and great dang rubber oddities up the wazoo. Swampy suit by Carl Fullerton and Neal Martz. Steve Neill on Leech Man. Arcane's Un-Men by Todd Masters and co. Batman... gawdam beautiful Tim Burton's Batman. The movie was a major event. Tho it didn't exactly do what the comics were doing at the time, it strikes a lovely balance. A workd was created that was exciting to be immersed in. Jack Nicholson became the Clown Prince of Crime with design by the great Nick Dudman. Suzanne Reynolds on prosthetics. Toxie 2 and 3 were released the same year cause it was supposed to be one movie but Uncle Lloydie infamously went, munched the forbidden fruit and expanded it into two. I'm definitely less thrilled thrilled about the results than I am with the first film but, hey, it's more TROMA and that's greatness. Plus, this third one has Toxie fightinh the bloody devil. Waxwork / Uninvited / Willow / Beetlejuice (1988) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Six ... Waxwork is another assortment of classic monsters rolled up into one extremely neat, very playful concept and shouldn't be missed if ya enjoyed Monster Squad. Fantastic FX here headed by Bob Keen. The werewolf featured Steve Hardie as the lead. We've certainly got a lot of great things to say about Greydon Clark and Uninvited. It features a mutant cat within a cat, ffs, brought to life using fantastically schlocky puppets, and there's even a bit of body horror thanks to the cat's infectious attack. FX overseen by Allan A. Apone with cat stuff by Debi and Jim Boulden. Extremely memorable to a certain generation, Willow's practical beasties are sassy and most certainly provided nightmare fuel for some. Nick Dudman and co. saw to a lot of these, while Phil Tippett took on the big ol' Eborsisk dragon. Beetlejuice, a glorious oddball from Tim Burton's most vital era, has some heap of gonzo rubber to see on top of its mainstream-brand-of-cult offerings. Beetlejuice's make-up was done by Ve Neill. Return of the Jedi / Space Raiders / Krull (1983) ... FX BY YEAR — Chapter Six ... And, finally, the sci-fi/fantasy quarter's turn. Ah, the long-term effects of Jabba's Palace on this rubber-lovin' mafk... The place was crawling with delicious practical beasties and it stole the movie for me. Many talented talented humans worked the creatures under the Industrial Light and Magic banner. I fuggin' love Space Raiders to pieces, man. My second favourite Star Wars knock-off next to Battle Beyond the Stars, both were Corman pictures. As a matter of fact, Raiders features the space shots, James Horner score, and būbies ship from Battle Beyond recycled into it. I dude wanted more Star Wars and these things have good memories attached to them. The creatures were designed by Michael Stevens. And Krull is bloodu priceless too. An often-overlooked little treasure with bombad rubber. Titanic Derek Meddings oversaw a lot of tremendous stuff, including the gorgeous spider sequence. Steven Archer animated that gorgeous, crystalline thing. Nick Dudman est un concepteur britannique d'effets de maquillage et de créatures pour le cinéma. Willow (1988) ... I've been sneaking in episodes of the TV show Extras wherever I can lately (man, I wish Maggie were a real person) and recently saw Ricky Gervais fight Warwick Davis ffs. Yesterday's Tippett post did the rest of the work prompting this. Willow's practical beasties are fuggin' lit and I'm sure were nightmare fuel for some. Nick Dudman and co. saw to a lot of these, whilr Phil Tippett took on the big ol' Eborsisk dragon (an unflattering tribute to Siskel & Ebert). 🎬🎨 Ian McDiarmid gets his Palpatine makeup done for Return of the Jedi. The casting director for Return of the Jedi approached McDiarmid about playing the Emperor after seeing him in a performance of the play Seduced, where he played a dying Howard Hughes. Despite only being in his 30s at the time, McDiarmid’s performance as the older Hughes convinced the casting director that he was the right actor to portray the ancient Emperor Palpatine in the movie. Once it was clear that the makeup department would be able to convincingly make the 37-year-old actor appear old and wrinkled in the close-up scenes, McDiarmid was offered the part. One of the finished suits now sits, preserved and restored in The Warner Bros HP Studio Tour at Leavesden. The suits (one of many) were worn by performers @spencerwilding and @marnixvdbroeke during shooting at Shepperton studios. I had the chance to make a few sets of antelope prosthetics from start to finish on #CarnivalRow designs by #NickDudman Creature and Makeup Effects Designer - and supervisor @sarah_makeupfx I am not sure if mine were actually used in the end but our team was generous with their knowledge, helped me - and I got to do something new! Thanks to @becciemufx for all of your great tips on assembling and painting and @yaschaputs for help running the horns and @keez1mua for all your knowledge in silicone and @chris_mufx for the photography skills and giggles 🔥❤️

This is a mid-stage of the #BlackBlood illness that #fae catch in #CarnivalRow which includes swollen glands and comes out her ear and spreads. Designed by the brilliant #NickDudman and applied by me. Delighted to have been part of this team! I worked on set applying #prosthetics as a #ProstheticMakeupArtist and in the workshop for Creature and Special Makeup Effects Designer #NickDudman I also was one of the #MUFX techs who made the ears and foreheads in the #silicone department

It seems now like it didn't happen but it was wonderful I met some amazingly talented people while working on this job!
