Like most young artists, BS Architecture student Daniella Ybut draws everything she sees around her. Using pen and watercolor, she would paint street houses connected by meshed wires in monochromatic palette. But as we worked closely together under the mentorship program of @theannext, we found an interesting direction that studies shadows and light, slowly shifting her maximalism to minimalism. From houses and streets, she found a profound interest in documenting local and ordinary plants that are periodically made more visible, albeit short, by natural light during specific times of the day. I like undressing a unique space and recreating it for a different purpose. Luckily, I found this space called Archive Haus inside Eastwood City. For the inaugural collection of @theannext titled, Kami Naman Po, @_archivehaus saw my creative vision, gave me their support, and allowed me to play with their beautiful space. Because Kami Naman Po features diverse artworks, it was very challenging to find a common ground that can seamlessly blend all artworks, while still celebrating and highlighting each artist’s distinct composition, characteristic palette, and unique visual narrative. Acknowledging its simplicity in physical form and its complex technical requirements as a tool, he chose to hone the great visual capacities of graphite in capturing a truth he discovered in his artistic journey— that a home, regardless of its size and wealth, over the course of time, will become a rubble of memories cherished and things forgotten. For as long as Nikko Orongan can remember, the mighty river in his hometown has been a backdrop of joyful and nostalgic memories. Its water has reflected his deep thoughts, wild curiosities, and lofty aspirations. Its current has washed away his tears from both victories and failures. To capture the life that water has given him, he manipulated oils to paint portraits and landscapes of familiar waters to make them appear like aging water-colored memories, either forgotten or kept. Guided by the ancient and universal metaphors of water, he captures its cathartic flowing movements, not only suggestive of the passage of time and life, but also of potential form and possibilities. Something I learned about art mentorship is that, you can’t mentor an artist when you are not familiar with the life journeys that defined and shaped him or her. In the case of Sorsogon-based artist John Darrel Evasco, I spent the first five weeks of our seven-month mentorship programme under THE ANNEXT trying to understand his hard life as a construction worker who just wants to build a better life for his young family. But despite the pains of poverty, every time he talks about his family, particularly his little boy, his tone shifts and his mood brightens up. Every time, he would share with me the kinds of cost-effective but beautifully creative plays and toys he builds with him. Combining the strength and precision of his labored hands and the extraordinary imagination he has developed to give his little boy a good and fun childhood, we found a concept that was most personal to him—to build an object that will make his little boy smile and happy and paint it under the shadows of their backyard trees to capture the passage of time. Because his hometown always gets so much rain, painting each composition with well-defined shadows is a form of gratitude to celebrate the rare abundance of sunshine, literally and figuratively. One time, I asked one collector what he thinks of John Darrel’s paintings. He replied, “It brings me joy. It takes me back to a happy place. I think he paints each canvas with happiness and gratitude in his heart, because it is reflected in his painting.” I couldn’t agree more. It took us a few strings of emotions and titles to represent the depth of this painting. And when we finally did, self-taught artist Thirdy Montero was fully convinced that “Leaving to Live for the First Time” is both his first professional painting (and title) and his first dive into his dreams of becoming a visual artist. Like its title, the painting went through emotional layers of paints and strokes, fears and doubts, and hopes and risks. But after three weeks of rigorously painting and editing it, Thirdy was deeply convinced that leaving his previous professional job to pursue painting and live as an artist was a good decision to finally live and be happy. Its water has reflected his deep thoughts, wild curiosities, and lofty aspirations. Its current has washed away his tears from both victories and failures. To capture the life the water has given him, he manipulated oils to paint portraits and landscapes of familiar waters to make them appear like aging water-colored memories, either forgotten or kept. Well-labored and persevering, the hands of John Darrel Evasco are used to creating things for others. In between job sites and raising his young family, he taught himself how to be an artist using oils. Inspired by the simplicity of provincial fatherhood, he reimagined the art of storytelling for his little boy and started creating objects from home-made clay. This form of storytelling led him to create still-life paintings of hand-sculpted clay objects which he would creatively position under the beautiful shadows of their backyard trees. Using muted contemporary palette, he paints his clay objects, positioned in interesting forms and movements, to capture the curiosity, innocence, and wonders of a provincial life for his little boy to enjoy and cherish. Deeply fascinated by the origins of grand manner, Jul Yett taught herself to paint to recreate the idealized aesthetic style of painting that is reminiscent of classicism and renaissance art. Using accessible materials—from staging cinematic shoots to painting them in her humble makeshift studio—she reimagines classical subjects in her own immediate environment and setting. Using the dramatic effects of natural light, she stages herself in creative social characters shaped and strongly influenced by the challenges of being a woman in contemporary times. After she finalizes a bold portraiture of a woman, she paints it and the whole process of painting it in her studio. For Duncan de Guzman, the appreciation for building infrastructures, like a cozy house for his family, comes from a personal story he was born with. Acknowledging its simplicity in physical form and its complex technical requirements as a tool, he chose to hone the great visual capacities of a graphite in capturing a truth he discovered in his artistic journey—that a home, regardless of its size and wealth, over the course of time, will become a rubble of memories cherished and things forgotten. Using a singular piece and kind of graphite for all his paper works, he beautifully manipulates this simple but challenging medium to form visual stories of the past and the present, of the shadow and the light, and of the life lived and the new life to live. Proximity and the absence of a decent phone signal are just two of the many challenges Jul Yett and I had to conquer under THE ANNEXT. As someone who is very used to fast talking, I had to significantly and patiently adjust to what a low, unstable signal can allow me to do and say. I remember repeating an entire three-minute instruction to Jul Yett, because the signal in her location was just unbelievably unreliable. And despite the heavy weekly post-mentorship homework I gave her—all my discovered and/or mentored artists are nodding their heads in agreement—she was never dismayed or felt discouraged. For a self-taught artist who only learned painting more than a year ago in a very humble setting, Jul Yett has remarkably transformed her art practice—from timid portraits to bold, well-composed social narratives that confidently speak of women’s plight in contemporary times. In her rigorous documentation of her immediate surroundings through watercolor painting, Daniella Ybut slowly found her artistic direction. After painting crowded streets and pavements she sees and passes by everyday, she developed a deep fascination for shadows formed and textured amplified by the natural light on interesting surfaces.
