Back at the loom (after having gone down the pattern drafting rabbit hole and sewing myself 3 dresses, a blouse, trousers and shorts). Right now trying out new yarns and new (to me) structures and working on expanding my warping skills. This time I decided to make two seperate warps, to avoid having to cut and tie a lot of knots. Half my warp is light and the other half is dark and medium alternating. Still some cutting and tying, but way less. Used the lease sticks of little Erica to help me hold one warp and used the regular warping sticks for the other part. It went on very smooth. And I will definitely think about using this method more often. I took them off the lease sticks onto the warping rod, pulling the rodd through the loops of the chain, alternating between the two layers to have them all lay in the correct order. It was smooth sailing from that point unwards. Another skill added. Now fingers crossed this project works out as planned. Color pallette based on my mother's interior decor choices, since I am planning to gift these to her. Although....I like the way they look at our table too. Making another batch is an option, since when I was emptying bobbins at the end of my warp, I noticed that bright colors on this warp made me think of the tulip fields around my area (see that last picture to see if you agree). We’ve been hard at work today trying to get this four shaft block doubleweave project going. There has been much weaving and unweaving getting the beat even (this is one of those “let’s place the weft rather than whomp it in there” projects) and all of that affects the selvedges so all in all very mindful weaving! This little wonky loom doodle doesn’t look like much to most, but it has told me plenty! And you do have to ignore the colors as I was using cone ends, remnants. I like the sett and some of the combinations of threading and treadling. So I set about building a design from this. It took me awhile. Finished the last big warp today - a color gamp that’s been on my To-Do list for a good 3 or more years! Gamps are a way of sampling within a piece to get visual “data”. This particular gamp will show me how colors interact with each other in weaving. For my quilty friends, this device is known as a warping mill and is used to measure out warp threads before they are wound onto the loom. Various experiments with striping sequences. I have a lot to learn about graphic division of space, and also overlaying color with striping sequences. Less is more. The transition between orange and blue stripes is beautiful. If that transition was the focus of the the piece, and was placed asymmetrically, and I only used those two colours, I think it would make for a very appealing towel. I could stare at these striping details forever! Another thing I learned is that I prefer a darker weft on a paler background, although I do love how lighter wefting sequences shimmer. #turnedtwill #handwoventowel #jstschoolofweaving
This project from #jstschoolofweaving was such an eye opener and so much fun. Amazing to see how many different designs came from the same warp. I was really skeptical about the original colors but I decided to go with them because I wanted to push myself. I looked at many different projects on instagram and Ravelry, and used some of these projects to inspire my experiments. The results was 15 towels. Over the next few days I plan to show them in more detail and talk about why some were more successful than others. I learned a lot about colour choice and design from this project. First up is the series of towels using the same color as the warp. Many of these were almost exact copies of ones #janestafford showed in her videos. I love them all. Using the same colours in the weft and warp always generates interesting eye-pleasing designs, especially in #turnedtwill. My favorite though is the last one, where the colour sequences were based on a plaid draft that I pulled from a book. This is one of my strategies - when in doubt about weft design, use a plaid sequence in the same colours as the warp. It might lead to a busy design, but I absolutely love it! #janestaffordtextiles #handwoventowel #weavingwednesday

Decided to play around with a basic two stripe and twill (2/2, 1/3 and 3/1) and some color play. Also put in some basket weave stripes. Just to show you can do nice stuff on 4 shafts and simple straight draw threading and a warp in just two color blocks to any beginners out there. Took Jane's exercises and designed some placemats around these. Used up some stash in a color, way out of my usual comfortzone, which made my husband laugh and question if I was feeling okay 🤣😂🤣 Still think they make a happy match with our garden table and the new deck I build. Here's an example of a project I thought I could start and finish in a couple of months, but it actually took 7 months! 😂 They weren't difficult, I just didn't have the bandwidth. 🙂 I'm calling these my Candy Apple towels. 🍎 I designed them using the Fibonacci sequence and pattern testing I did in @janestaffordtextiles School of Weaving. Another finished project. Played around with denting and spacing some more and like the outcome. The holes closed up almost completely, but left these transparant spots in the cloth I realy like. Day 70/100 I have been spending quite a bit of time in Beloved's office, watching Jane Stafford's School of Weaving classes. Season 1 focuses on dressing the loom and developing or improving weaving techniques. Her indepth videos have helped me tremendously. Look at my selvages!!!! Sharp, clean and tidy, with no bunching. My weaving speed has increased dramatically!!!! The shuttle flies now that I don't have worry and mess about with edges. Season 5 Episode 3 is the beginning of our study on Huck for 4 shafts at the School of Weaving. Huck can be threaded so many ways, which can be confusing sometimes. Jane makes it so easy to understand by showing us how to draft it and how we can create different combinations in our treadling. We work with 2 units, A & B, and learn how to get weft floats, warp floats and lace in those 2 units which gives us 6 marvellous notes to write some pretty beautiful music :) You’ll also learn to read the cloth so you are able to figure out any 4 shaft Huck pattern you look at!
