At any point in time, you are bound to look around my house and see at minimum one animal ๐. With the dining room and living room being favorite spots. Gemini, our board and train, has been doing great around our three dogs and two cats. Everyone has been living a fairly calm little life with each other.
How has it been 8 years since me and my bestie met each other? That seems absolutely wild to me. Today, Jax's owner shared the two puppy pictures. It was a Facebook memory from his very first day of class โค๏ธ. My goodness time zooms by! Just this week, Jax showed up to training, acted like he was going to Nicholas for attentioned and zoned right in on my attention instead ๐. That was much to Nicholas's disappointment. When I see memories like this, it gets me right in the feels. So much has happened in 8 years and so many dogs that I have interacted with. One thing I didn't realize but has been a blessing are all the amazing clients I am now blessed to call friends โค๏ธ. I am a lucky girl!

We started our day with a lesson at Tractor Supply! This handsome black lab, weighs in at over 100 lbs and is quite strong and excitable. Weโve been working with him on his manners, impulse control and just overall calmness. He did great today! Do you have a dog that is easily distracted and excitable who you feel you cannot control or are even nervous taking out in public? With a strong foundation of basic obedience, your dog will not only learn how to do some commands, but will also learn how to think about their actions and next move(s). They will become calmer and more relaxed in their demeanor. Look at Dakota, go! I love watching Dakota in training she definitely goes by the beat of her own drum. One of my favorite things is doing some urban agility around downtown Sydney. This is when we utilize objects to challenge and work the dogs' brains. The main purpose is to find different ways to work their brains and complete confidence boosting exercises. Take exercises such as this: To us, it would not look very complicated, but to a dog, there are a lot of different things happening here: ๐ธ๏ธ the bench has a different feeling to it. Not all dogs will have walked on it and they have to balance. ๐ธ๏ธ the space is narrow, and the dogs need to watch where their paws are placed. ๐ธ๏ธ the smells of the flower beds are always so tempting. ๐ธ๏ธ they are being asked to jump up on something and are often unsure about it. The height can be a new experience. ๐ธ๏ธ once on the object, we often get them to either sit, lay, or walk. This is an additional thing they have to think through. You do not need to make an exercise complicated for it to be effective. We are always encouraging clients to take a look around and see what is in the environment you explore. It is good for dogs and fun for humans. Reminder- the dogs may be unsure or hesitant in the beginning, but once they accomplish it, the next time is easier and easier. Take time to go slow and work through their confusion.

One of the most rewarding success stories during my time in SC, so far, has been working with the little beagle mix. Though all of my clients and their dogs are success stories in my book, this little beagle mix needs an extra shout out. She won the lottery when she was rescued from the SPCA by the best mom she could ever ask for, living on a 20 acre horse farm. Though sheโs cute as can be, she was a bit of a challenge with her strong will and stubbornness behind that sweet face. But, yesterday she made my entire being smile while she worked, off leash with her mom, side by side with the horses for the first time. Sheโs worked around the horses with me for the last few weeks, but never side by side like this. The obedience has transferred over to her mom so beautifully, and this little pup can now fully enjoying being part of this incredible lifestyle and home. Her mom can also rest easy knowing that she has a reliable dog now, on and off leash, to coexist with her stunning horses and be part of the equine world she so very much wanted this pup to be able to be a part of. I truly couldnโt be any happier and more proud! ๐ Iโm so grateful to have been able to be part of this dogโs training journey. Her whole world has improved for the better! If your dog can do it for me, your dog can (and will) do it for you! You just need to put the time and work into working your dog, so that they learn that you KNOW how to make them do it. That may, however, require you to get out of your comfort zone, develop a different way of thinking and change some of your daily routine. The reason your dog can do something for their trainer and not for you, is simply due to having developed respect for that trainer which was built through working with them. Once your dog learns that you know how to make them respond to you, that you have the power to make them listen and work for you how you want them to, and that you will hold them accountable for their actions, then you will gain respect from your dog and the rest will flow with that. Build the respect through your work, and you will reap the benefits of that respect with a dog who will be responsive in listening to you and have the manners you expect from them. ๐ And the cherry on top: your entire relationship and bond with your dog strengthens! As we all know, today has been filled with rain ๐ง. That has made the outdoor adventures with the board and trains very limited. Do you feel like you canโt find the proper amount of time in your busy day to work and train with your pup? ๐ I offer one on one private training sessions and would be more than happy to work with your pup daily and/or as often as needed to help you achieve your training goals. Private sessions are house calls, so I come to you! And if you canโt be present daily, thatโs ok, initially you donโt need to be. But, once your dog is doing consistently well for me, we will need to find a little bit of time to work in some lessons together to ensure you know how to follow through and maintain the training at home. The Prong Collar ๐ This is a ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐น that will be effective, give you control, give your dog a sense of direction and correction, and when used correctly, be the least harming to your dog. A prong collar enables you to deliver gentle communication to direct your dog to follow you and learn, without hurting them, choking them, or doing any damage at all. The prong collar allows you to communicate with your dog without exerting physical force on your dogโs body. It gives you the ability to calmly use leverage, rather than yanking and cranking on your dogโs neck while using a regular flat buckle collar, martingale collar, gentle leader or halti. Those collars can cause trachea damage or other neck injuries. It also does not limit your dogโs natural gait like a harness may, leading to orthopedic injuries. Instead, you can use a prong collar to guide and teach your dog with ease and comfort for both of you. Prong collars were designed with a dogโs safety in mind. Some go over, and some go under ๐๐ถ. Technically, Sampson did over and under ๐, but I only managed to capture under. The dogs are so quick that I don't often get great photos. When we do our downtown adventures, we enjoy a little urban agility. This is when we utilize items along our journey. It can be a staircase, benches, chairs, something to jump over or walk up onto. We do these routes a lot, and several of the dogs are very accustomed to it and know what is expected and how to do it.
Jax can be such a goof! He took being calm on the bench pretty seriously. He got up there and cozied right in ๐.

It was a chilly training day today, but we did get a downtown adventure in with our Life Skills & Beyond group. A downtown walk had us moving and kept us just a little warmer ๐. Come on spring temperatures! It has been nice to be back into the routine after being away. I do love routine!
Does your dog have some poor habits? The more you allow things to slide, the more you pattern those behaviors in the long-run. If your dog is constantly ignoring you or breaking a command, barking incessantly, chewing on things at home, digging up your yard, etc, donโt think for a second they will just one day choose to stop. This wonโt stop until you do something about it. And the longer you let it go on, the more your dog gets away with it, the more โfunโ it becomes for them, and the harder it will be to break once it becomes habitual. If you see a behavior you dislike, with a puppy or an adult dog, step in and correct them. Teach them right versus wrong right away. Donโt think to yourself, โitโs just a phaseโ, or โit only happens when ___โ because I promise you, it will escalate, unless you intervene. Your own behaviors and actions (or lack there of) have a lot to do with the success of dog training. The way your dog perceives you, if they take you seriously or not, if they respect you or not, will dictate how they act in your presence. No amount of dog training is a substitute for a weak relationship. You have to set rules, boundaries and structure.
