📢 4th District yellow curb additions! 📢 Yellow curbing has been extended at the intersection of Tiverton Way and Harvard Drive. This addition was necessary because it was difficult to see oncoming traffic when turning right or left onto Tiverton Way from Harvard Drive. By not allowing cars to park in this area, it greatly increases safety and visibility at the curve in the road. There are several other intersections throughout the 4th District where I have requested similar installations or extensions of existing yellow curbs. If there are other areas where you believe this would be beneficial, please reach out to my office by emailing [email protected] or by calling (859) 280-8241. Additionally, Victoria Way from Bradford Colony to Man O’ War northbound, is now NO PARKING ANYTIME on the entire block. This was done to keep parked cars from blocking the right turn lane. The obstruction from parked cars was causing a long back up of traffic, especially during rush hour. Lastly, I had the yellow curbing refreshed on Spangler Drive next to Kirklevington Park. There have recently been reports that vehicles are still parking in this area. If this or any other violation occurs, please call the non-emergency police number (859) 258-3600). Milling and Paving are underway on Southpoint Drive and work is scheduled to continue through May 25th. The contractors have put up “No Parking” signs along Southpoint Drive. Unfortunately, this work coincides with an extremely busy weekend for Southeastern Baseball. Due to circumstances out of our control, parking and traffic will be impacted. Please be patient, and plan for additional time if you are parking in the area of Veterans Park. Earlier this year, I had the boulders on the baseball entrance side moved to allow for parking on the grass. While those additional spaces can be utilized this weekend, it is likely that parking will bleed onto the neighborhood streets. Please drive slowly and cautiously in the area. Reminder: for a signal detector to work properly at a traffic signal, you must stop behind the stop bar. The stop bar is the line perpendicular to your car painted just in front of the crosswalk markings at most intersections. It's especially important that your car not be positioned too far forward or backward when in a turn lane. Traffic Engineering has added time to the length of the green arrow southbound Nicholasville Road onto Dundee Drive and Wilson Downing turning southbound onto Nicholasville Road. These sensors, as well as the one on Nicholasville Road to turn into Southpoint, have been tested and are working as designed. The long awaited pedestrian refuges will soon be installed at Southpoint Drive and Rose Hurst Way as well as Tiverton Way and La Rue. It is similar to the one in the picture above, which is installed on Euclid in front of the Kroger. The process is ongoing. Here are the next steps for each location: Southpoint Drive/Rose Hurst Way - Installation of this refuge has been delayed to to upcoming paving in the area that will take place later this month. Once that work is complete, the modular median and pavement markings will be installed. The city will coordinate with the pavement marking contractor so that some pavement markings will be installed with the repaving work. -ADA compliant curb ramps will be installed, followed by complete markings and signs. Tiverton Way/La Rue -This refuge has gone down, however there is a delay in installing ADA compliant curb ramps, pavement marking, and crosswalks. Once the ramps are ready and installed, the signs and markings will follow. I continue to make improvements around the 4th District to make our neighborhoods safer. Progress continues on Wilson Downing Road to relocate the natural gas distribution system before construction on the sidewalk begins! Last week, I had a site visit with Columbia Gas of Kentucky to inform me on the progress of this project. During the site visit, the project manager explained that due to the amount of rock they’ve encountered while digging, 2-3 months have been added to the timeline of relocating the gas line. I am committed to safety in our neighborhoods while making our streets walkable, and will continue to advocate to move this project forward until it’s completion. I appreciate your patience. 🌳 The City of Lexington recently introduced a new project called Lex Grow Trees. Its goal is to make Lexington’s tree population healthier and bigger. Thanks to $1.5 million from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, Lex Grow Trees will use this money to plant new trees, take care of existing ones and teach people why trees are so important for our environment, society, economy and health. 🌳 The application window for the first round of grants is currently open. Nonprofits, neighborhood associations, and businesses can apply for money to help with tree projects in Fayette County. Applications are due April 26. Recipients will be notified by May 31, in time to get supplies for planting in the fall. A total of $500,000 is available this round, with a maximum award of $100,000, if approved by Council. At the request of Southern Middle School Principal’s Kevin Payne and the SMS PTSA, I made a video for their Spartan Day celebration. All students were shown the video first thing Friday morning in their AL class to kick off Spartan Day. They asked me to speak about the importance of diversity, respect, listening to voices of others and using our voices. These kids have had to overcome COVID shutdowns and NTI learning. I am proud of all of them. At the request of Southern Middle School Principal’s Kevin Payne and the SMS PTSA, I made a video for their Spartan Day celebration. All students were shown the video first thing Friday morning in their AL class to kick off Spartan Day. They asked me to speak about the importance of diversity, respect, listening to voices of others and using our voices. These kids have had to overcome COVID shutdowns and NTI learning. I am proud of all of them. Last night, current and former council members and mayors gathered to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our merged government. In 1972, voters approved the Charter of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and the merger of the city and county governments. On Jan. 1, 1974, the merged government became Kentucky’s first urban county government. Fifty years later, it remains one of a handful of merged local governments nationwide. At the beginning of last night’s Council Meeting, @mayorgorton presented the proclamation and honored the former officials. Earlier this year, I was able to fully fund uniforms for the Southern Elementary boy’s basketball team. I’ve cultivated a relationship with every PTA in my District, and in schools that 4th District students attend. We are all working together to raise the same kids.
