I had the loveliest evening at the opening of the Comme Ca X AWOL Open Call 2024 exhibition in Manchester last night. Beautiful, beautiful work, and so thoughtfully curated. Wish I'd taken more photos, but that just sounds like great excuse to pop back for another visit. Really recommend going to take a look, it won't disappoint. I was not diligent at all in making a note of the other exhibiting artists, I'm so sorry, usually I'm all over that kinda thing. I had my note book with me and everything! Co-collaborator of the Comme Ca Art x AWOL Studios Open Call Exhibition, here’s a bit more about this Ancoats gem! 🏭💘 ‘AWOL Studios located in the heart of Ancoats, is one of the largest creative studios in the North West. We’ve 4 floors of studios, brimming with creatives ranging from artists, fashion designers, tattooists, filmmakers, writers, jewellers, theatre performers, sculptors, photographers and many more! Our home is Hope Mill, a beautiful grade II listed building built in 1824 as a cotton spinning and fustian weaving mill for Joseph Clarke & Sons. Over the next 177 years it has had many other guises, from engineering works to dog bed factory, gradually and gracefully falling into decline and disrepair until it was rescued by Hope Mill Partnership in 2001. With AWOL being the first business to lay down its artistic roots in Hope Mill in 2007 it has become one of the most important centres for the arts in Manchester, allowing for a natural regeneration of this important historic building and attracting a myriad of other creative businesses. Colette Lilley was the overall winner of the AWOL Studios X Comme Ca Art Open Call Exhibition 2023, ‘The process of entering is great in itself as you can reflect upon your practice. It is a fantastic opportunity to get your work seen and be recognised by your peers.’ Colette is an award winning visual artist based in Liverpool. She explores the process of observational drawing in her work. Colette gained a Masters in Art and Design Practice at Loughborough University where she researched the link between Dyslexia and Creativity. A topic still prevalent within her practice as she explores the benefits of drawing. Colette also co-founded Liverpool Artists’ Network (2015), @livartnet ~ a platform whose aim is to connect artists, art organisations, venues, groups and collectives of Liverpool. The Desire Path actually got shortlisted for the The CommeCa Art x AWOL Studios Open Call exhibition this year and I got to see my work printed and hanging in a lovely space for the first time in a while. Introducing Jude Wainwright Jude Wainwright's work is autobiographical, painting self portraiture or meaningful objects and landscapes. She is often repetitive with her subject matter, painting similar subjects multiple times in a ritual of sorts. ‘I am Inspired by the performance of rituals as a means of therapy. Rituals have the ability to empower us – to help us learn, grow and reconnect with ourselves. The idea of regaining ‘control’ through creating repetitive habits in order to soothe feelings of anxiety is something I am drawn to.’ Much like diary entries, her paintings serve as keep sakes, a space for reflection and rumination. Created using photographs taken by the artist’s father, her paintings depict places often visited during family walks in Jude Wainwright's childhood - ‘I enjoy the fact these places have barely changed since I visited them 30 odd years ago.
