A few nights go I was perusing through local estate sale ads and I spotted these Victorian Bristol glass vases. I adore Bristol glass! The sale was advertised as a fire sale..it was day 4. I got there 20 minutes early…first in line. The estate sale guy was super grumpy but I continued to be nice. Designing the kitchen at stayat42nd, our airbnb in Forest Park, was such a fun process. I’ve collected blue and white plates over time and knew when we bought this apartment the kitchen would be the perfect space to display them in. I refinished the floor with opaque white water-based stain and stained the cedar floor in the little bar behind the kitchen with a semitransparent deck stain and hand painted a darker Greek key border. We covered the existing shiplap with 1/8” solid birch panels and built shallow open shelving to rest on the countertops. The ceiling fixture is from an estate sale and the federal mirror is from a local antique shop. This is a lovely vintage Mushin Kokeshi By Watanabe Masao (1917-2007). It is said that Mushin is achieved when a person's mind is free from thoughts of anger, fear, or ego during combat or everyday life. It seems that the artist's purpose while creating this Kokeshi was to make anyone who looked at it innocent again. Born in Fukushima, Watanabe Masao is said to be the most popular and prolific of the 20th century Sosaku Kokeshi artists, he began his craft in the early 1950s. This is in perfect condition and looks untouched. Lilacs always make me think of a darling children’s book called A Bear and His Boy, about a bear named Mack who wakes up one morning with a boy on his back. They go on sweet simple adventures together, and at one point stop to smell the lilacs. 💜 We are so fortunate to have a ton of them down one side of our yard. White, and two shades of purple. And they smell glorious. I’ll be bringing them in by the armful until they pass. I woke up again to unexpected sunshine. I’ve got work at home today, but Steve is driving up to NH to bring the first load of Milo’s stuff home for the summer. We’ll head back up again in about a week for the rest and him, but there’s too much for one trip.🫣 It’s utterly insane to me that he’s finishing up his freshman year. Time is a thief. But he’s absolutely loved it, and thrived beyond my highest hopes. Oh to have a full house again soon!
