This was a deceptively tricky and time consuming little binding repair for this @Fender @TheRealMarcusMiller signature Jazz Bass that came in from @JohnRansomTucker. In the end things came out about as good as we could ask without being able to spray finish here in my little shop. A little amber CA glue from @StewMac_Guitar helped blend things a bit with a drop fill and level. And here is the finished result of that @Fender Special Edition 70’s Jazz Bass now that everything is fixed and it is all dialed in. 👍🏻 This one ended up being quite the unexpected journey. Man do I wish slide 1 was the “before” shot… 🫠 It’s not. 😐 All this work to deal with a 1st fret truss rod crack, and in the end it all failed because the truss rod came in over compressed on this 70’s Jazz Bass reissue. One more try tomorrow after I pull the clamps on this nightmare which is back glued up. I swear April 2021 was the official “Sure I’ve got time for a quick 24 hour turnaround setup. Bring your instrument by the shop” turning into the “So… we need to refret, rewire, re-glue, re-drill, etc. etc. etc.” month. In all honesty a lot of the time I prefer the bigger jobs where the end result feels like you’ve really changed the course of an instrument’s future and changed how its owner is going to feel every time they pick it up. I think that’s probably why I enjoy this line of work so much. That feeling of knowing you did something to take an instrument back from the brink is one of the most fulfilling feelings any luthier can have. In this case the ‘74 Jazz that I’ve posted about a couple times already came out incredibly well in the end after a bridge refit, a refret, a new nut, a full rewire, and a setup. Just wrapped up hand carving a brand new bone nut and a setup on this ‘99 Limited Edition, @Fender Crafted In Japan, Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. Carving a nut from scratch can be tricky business in general, but when you throw in binding that the new nut has to fit directly in between into the fold it gets even more difficult.
