On Saturday May 4th, North Pitt United and Penn Hills girls joined forces to compete in a day of 7s rugby. Their first match of the rainy day was against Mt. Lebanon and the girls quickly found themselves down a try. They answered with one of their own, but Lebo responded. North Pitt dotted one down to end the first half, and with the conversion, were up by two points. The second half defense by both teams was impressive and North Pitt scored a converted try shortly before the final whistle to extend their lead to 19-10. The match against a depleted Doddridge team resulted in a 38-0 victory. The girls lined up against State College for their final game of the day. On a sunny and hot Sunday April 28th, seven North Pitt United girls arrived at Mt. Lebanon stadium to face off against the other RugbyPA D2 West teams. Their first match was against the side from Doddridge, WV and the North Pitt girls started with a 28-5 victory. The second match was against a combined side of Penn HIlls and West Allegheny and the NPU girls’ support and speed resulted in a 40-5 win. Their last match was against Mt. Lebanon. The North Park girls were ahead in the first half 12-0 but Lebo stormed back in the second half with two trys, narrowing the game to 12-10. Last week Sunday, eight North Pitt United girls suited up to play 7s at West Allegheny High School. They were joined by four girls from Penn Hills. Together they went 3-0 on the day. They shut out West Allegheny with a score of 0-33. The girls gave up two trys in the Doddridge game but put down six of their own for a final score of 38-10. Their last match of the day was against Mt. Lebanon and a slim first half lead of 7-5 was extended to a final score of 28-12. On Sunday April 14th all nine North Pitt United girls joined with Doddridge to play 15s rugby against Moon. This was the first time playing 15s for most of our girls, and going up against an experienced Moon side provided a daunting challenge. While the scoreline was not in our favor, the girls played great rugby and made new friends. In the following matches, several of our girls donned Mt. On Friday March 22, 2024 three North Pitt United girls and their coach traveled to Penn Hills High School to play under the lights. This was the first live rugby for the newly formed Penn Hills girls team. With eleven total players active, a game of five vs six was decided upon. Jill graciously donned the host’s jersey, giving the Penn Hills team an experienced leader in their first action of the season. Amelia joined the four girls from West Allegheny to create the team of five. Kennedy was on the officiating crew as a touch judge. As play started, Jill took a rumbling run down the side, fending off multiple tacklers and giving a beautiful offload assist to a Penn Hills player for their first try. The inexperience and jitters were evident with the lack of ball control in the tackle, resulting in several knock ons and thrown forwards. The second half was reduced to five vs five and Jill swapped to the West A team. Both sides settled down in the second period and the rugby improved. Thank you to Penn Hills and West Allegheny for the opportunity to play and a special thank you to Sebastian for refereeing this match before his official assignment. What is Tropical 7s? A World Class International rugby 7s festival that is held annually each Easter week, and has become one of the world's leading youth rugby events (170+ teams), bringing together school and university age teams from around the world together for a once-in-a-lifetime rugby tour experience under the warm Florida sunshine. While attracting the world’s elite teams, the competition is open to all teams of various skill levels for boys & girls sides at U18, U16, U14, U12 (Coed) and University/U23 age groups, and in 2024, adult teams. Players at the TROPICAL 7s regularly get seen by recruiters and talent scouts. Many players at the tournament have since been selected for national teams as well as getting recruited by and offered scholarships to play in college in the US. The TROPICAL 7s takes place at the stunning Tampa Sportsplex which consists of 15 professionally maintained full-size pitches, all featuring premium LED floodlights & live stream capability. North Pitt are beyond excited to announce that we have 9 players going to Tropical 7s this year. North Pitt Utd High School boys travelled to Indiana on weds night to play under the lights. This was a rescheduled fixture so it was unfortunate that a number of players could not be there and so we travelled light on numbers. The boys who were there put in a strong performance against an experienced and senior heavy Indiana team. The official score logged with Rugby PA was 47-7. When Indiana pulled a number of their senior players, North Pitt made a strong comeback with a final score of 47-42. On Sunday our High School boys had their first official fixture against Central Catholic at Central Catholic. The North Pitt team, which mostly consists of new players came up against a more experienced Central Catholic side, that boasts a number of seniors and a number of players who have played for several years. Despite this, the North Pitt boys started strong with rigid defense and strong ball carrying attack and were the first to put points on the board. Ultimately the Central Catholic strength and experience came through ending on a final score of 24-47. On Sunday, our HS Boys travelled to Indiana for their first scrimmages against Indiana, West Allegheny and Blair Utd. The day was arranged such that each team played 3 shorts 20 min scrimmages where the boys could get exposure to the 15 a side format of the game. With half of our team new to rugby, this was a great 1st experience for the boys. The coaches are immensely proud of the whole team as they all rose to the challenge and made great strides towards implementing what they have been learning it practice. The day was a huge success because, not only was it a learning opportunity, but the team also walked away with 2 wins and a loss.
