The Dye Preserve would fall under the category of a “friendlier Dye” course IMO. Generous fairways to greens with softer contours and short grass surrounds and water in play a little less frequency than some of his designs makes for a much more enjoyable round. But this doesn’t mean you can take a shot off. There are still plenty of Dye traits that can pose challenges….pot bunkers, mounds, long fairway bunkers and angled tee shots, some of which force you to a side that you think is safer but will put you in a much worse spot than if you take on the difficult route. Conditions are perfect with fast fairways and greens where it’s tough to see a pitch mark even with wedges, yet well struck shots will hold. The one thing I was not expecting to see was the abundance of Saint Augustine grass surrounding tees and fairways. The Match course at Jonathan’s Landing, a Gil Hanse design from 2022. One of the shorter courses built recently at only 6,500 from the back tees. However with three par 3s from 202-239 this is no pushover. Greens are also fairly small and have some wild slopes. The land at Jupiter Hills isn’t the only wild contouring, I had no idea how crazy the greens and surrounds also are on the Hills course. I would love to get back here on a “calm” day (as in not blowing 30) and really get to see how you can use the contours of the greens to funnel balls to pins or use backstops. Finally had a chance to play the Palm Beach Par 3 yesterday, originally a Dick Wilson and Joe Lee design, renovated by Raymond Floyd. It’s more than just a hit and giggle with holes ranging from 80 yards all the way to roughly 210. The Commander at Lakewood National will be hosting the @kornferrytour in a couple weeks, but it’s ready to go right now. The course is in fantastic condition, fairways are firm, greens are blazing quick and the surrounds of the greens are faster than greens at some places. Both Commander (2017) and Piper (2020) were designed by Arnold Palmer’s senior architect, Brandon Johnson. Ross’ West at Belleair, restored by Jason Stracka in 2022. A beautiful site along the Clearwater Harbor, but until recently you couldn’t see the water while standing on the first tee, a mere 300 yards away. With tree removal, the harbor is now in full view on the entire front side, exposed sand dunes add to the charm and give the feel of a beachside course. Finally had a chance to play the CC of Orlando, a Ross built in 1911 and renovated by Jim Nagle and Ron Forse in 2017. Dead flat course with bunkers everywhere, greens with some interesting contour and short grass run offs. My only “complaint” is that too many of the short grass run offs end up funneling balls into Bermuda rough as opposed to staying in short grass, IMO this takes away from the purpose and creativity of having short grass surrounds. #yaygolf #golf #golfcourse #orlando #florida #donaldross

Burnt Pine is the private club at the Sandestin Resort, a Rees Jones design from the mid 90’s. A few holes touch the Choctawhatchee Bay (pics 1 and 2), but the rest is very much a standard Florida golf course with stakes and lakes and the typical Rees features, green contours with small sections and artificial mounding surrounding every hole. The club also underwent a bunker renovation in the fall, removing many bunkers and reshaping or resizing the rest. Some of the bunker removal made sense with them being out of play. Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club near Destin, originally a nine hole course, expanded to 18 holes in 1988 and renovated by Bill Bergin in 2021. Absence of rough does not mean easy as sandy waste areas with a Pinehurst feel put a premium on accuracy off the tee and precision iron play to avoid short grass run offs around greens, some of which can be punishing. Opening day of “preview play” at Cabot Citrus Farms Karoo course, formerly the Pine Barrens course at World Woods. The new course designed by Kyle Franz. Most of the standout holes on Karoo kept the primary design features of those on Pine Barrens such as the 4th, 8th, 12th, 14th and 15th. The 3rd is a fantastic new hole, playing the opposite direction in the corridor of the old 16th. While all of the exposed sand is the most prominent feature, the size and contour of the greens will be the next thing most will notice. Most greens are now massive compared to the old course, and the contour can be described as aggressive. When the green speeds get cranked up over time, the contours will really show and make approach play much more important. RainDance National, a Harrison Minschew and Fred Funk design about an hour from Denver. 8,400+ from the “Tour” tees plays much shorter than that due to both the altitude and most of the longer holes playing down-mountain. TPC Colorado. Host of a Korn Ferry Tour event annually. Most bunkers have revetted faces, which does look a little strange in Colorado. A few “templates” are present like the Biarritz but this one features a slightly angled green with water left. The fifth course at Kohler is the ten hole Par 3 course, The Baths, is sandwiched between holes 1-2 and 11 on the Meadow Valleys course, designed by Chris Lutzke and the late Herb Kohler. The Lakes course at Lake Arrowhead, across the street from Sand Valley, is somewhat misleading. While there are more “lakes” than its sister course, The Pines, rarely are they in play, set far away from edges of greens, it takes a really bad shot to end up in one of them. A discussion was had in our group about Mammoth being “too easy”. While you may score better here than anywhere else, there is still so much interest in the angles the width in the fairways allow you to play based on hole locations.
