The One & Only #WillieDixon 💯🎸 Willie Dixon (born William James “Willie” Dixon on July 1, 1915 in Vicksburg, Miss.) is credited with writing over 500 songs—and serving as a vital link between blues and rock ‘n’ roll. He was exposed to gospel, blues and country & western music in his youth, when he began singing and writing songs. He moved to Chicago in 1936, where he was a boxer for a short time. An upright bass player, he also performed with Chicago recording bands including the Five Breezes, the Four Jumps of Jive and the Big Three Trio. At Chicago’s legendary Chess Records beginning in 1951, he served as a recording artist, session musician, in-house songwriter and staff musician, producing, arranging and playing bass on sessions for roster artists including Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson. As an artist in his own right, his 1988 album Hidden Charms won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Recording. It’s a long and fascinating history, but a major part of that development is due to the #GreatMigration, during which African Americans in the early 20th century left the Deep South for the economic opportunities of the Rust Belt cities of the north, fusing the country blues with a more urban sound. The Chicago Blues, #Harlem Renaissance, Philadelphia Sound, and Detroit’s #Motown all came from this fertile period of cultural exchange and musical fusion. Willie Dixon composed some of the most popular blues standards, like #LittleRedRooster, #Spoonful, #WangDangDoodle, #MyBabe, and #IJustWantToMakeLoveToYou. He was one of the most prolific songwriters of his era and his influence spread wide through covers by #HowlinWolf, #MuddyWaters, #ChuckBerry, #TheRollingStones and so many others. Today on Balmoral Blues we’ll hear from Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player #BigDaveMcLean. Born in Saskatchewan and later raised in Winnipeg, MB, McLean’s mother was a classical pianist and his father was a minister. He was introduced to blues and folk by his older brother, who had a collection of records. The brothers would later travel to the Mariposa Folk Festival in Toronto, where the young McLean received an impromptu guitar lesson from musician John P. Hammond. As a young man he began playing the club and festival scene in Manitoba, working odd jobs and construction to pay the bills. He released his debut album, “Muddy Waters for President”, in 1989. Over the years he has worked with a who’s who of Canadian blues talent including @ColinJamesMusic and @SteveMarriner. McLean identifies strongly with the prairies, and has played the festival circuit in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. He is perhaps best known for his signature gravelly voice. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including a #JunoAward, and has released 8 studio albums including his newest, “This Old Life”, to be released May 3. Today’s show also features fellow Canadian bluesman, Toronto singer-songwriter and harmonica player #AlLerman. Lerman got his start in elementary school where he discovered a lifelong passion for music. Starting at the age of 11 he began going to see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee shows, kindling his interest in the blues. Considered one of the top harmonica players in Canada, Lerman is also known for his extensive knowledge of the blues and his ability to seamlessly cross genres. Also a longtime member of the Maple Blues Band, he has played with greats including @MuddyWatersOfficial, #KokoTaylor, and #WillieDixon. He has released 5 solo albums and offers ongoing harmonica workshops across the festival circuit. Happy Birthday to Marion Walter Jacobs, Little Walter. While Walter’s music might not be known to all these days, one listen to his classic sides from the early 1950s and it’s easy to realize that’s there’s hardly a single person alive today who doesn’t love a band or artist that was clearly influenced by this man from Louisiana, or at least love a band who was influenced by a band that was influenced by Little Walter. You can take college classes and watch documentaries about the rock and roll explosion of 1955, but Little Walter was exploding before that, his playing clearly not just inspiring other harmonica players but so many people playing other instruments, electric guitar for example. And no matter how good his harmonica playing, his blowing was always wrapped in the song, helping power it along, taking the spotlight but bringing the thing with him, all part of the locomotion, the song moving like a freight train and his playing like the whistle blowing. The world as we know it would be a completely different place without the influence of Little Walter. HEY LOCO FANS - Chicago blues guitarist Jimmy Lee Robinson, also known as Lonesome Lee, was born Apr 30, 1931 in Chicago. Robinson began his musical career as a harmonica player before taking up the guitar. Over the course of his career, he played with some of the biggest names in blues and recorded several albums of his own. Robinson's music was characterized by his soulful voice, his intricate guitar playing, and his deep understanding of the blues tradition. One of Robinson's most famous songs is "Rosie Mae," which he wrote about his wife. The song has been covered by several other blues musicians, including Magic Slim, who recorded a version of the song in 1997. Another one of Robinson's signature songs is "Lonely Travelin'." Despite his talent and influence, Robinson's career was relatively short. He struggled with health problems throughout his life. However, his music continues to be remembered and celebrated by blues fans around the world. One of the things that set Robinson apart from other blues musicians of his time was his versatility as a musician. In addition to playing guitar and harmonica, he was also a talented songwriter and arranger. He was able to incorporate elements of jazz, soul, and other genres into his music, creating a unique sound that was all his own. Robinson was also known for his collaborations with other musicians. He played with blues legends such as Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf, and he was a fixture on the Chicago blues scene for many years. He was a mentor to younger musicians, and he helped to shape the careers of several up-and-coming blues artists. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Robinson's music, with several reissues of his albums and recordings being released. HEY LOCO FANS - Blues guitarist Lefty Dizz was born on April 29, 1937, in Osceola, Arkansas. His real name is Walter Williams and before his four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force ended in 1956, Lefty began to play the guitar. When he returned to Chicago later that year, he came under the tutelage of Lacy Gibson and Earl Hooker. In 1958, Lefty joined Sonny Thompson's road band, playing rhythm 'n' blues throughout the country. During a gig in Seattle, a left-handed teenage guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, hung out with, and was influenced by, Lefty Dizz. In 1960, Lefty moved to Detroit, where he remained for four years, working with Junior Cannady and John Lee Hooker. From 1964 to 1971, Lefty worked with Junior Wells, during which time they toured the U.S., Canada, Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Fiji Islands and Indonesia. Lefty then joined Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers, performing extensively until Hound Dog's passing in late 1975. He then formed his own band, Lefty Dizz and Shock Treatment. His most well-known compositions include "Bad Avenue", "I Found Out", If I Could Just Get My Hands on What I Got My Eyes On", Funny Acting Woman", "Somebody Stole My Christmas" and "Ain't It Nice to be Loved". 738. Chuck Berry - "Little Queenie"/"Almost Grown" 45, 1959. Business just picked up big time because I just uncovered some Chuck Berry 45s! I was never really the biggest Chuck Berry fan for some reason, but I finally came around when I sat down & listened to my dad's copy of the Great Twenty-Eight CD a couple years ago. Some songs are better than others, but Chuck Berry is all right in my book; I don't know what I was thinking! Both of these songs are all-time '50s rock 'n' roll classics & I really don't think anybody reading this needs an elaborate description of what they sound like. You would've had to have lived your entire life sheltered under the biggest boulder imaginable to never have heard either of these tunes. "Little Queenie" was never one of my favorite Chuck Berry songs, but it has grown on me a little bit over the years. Hearing both the Beatles & the Rolling Stones play their vastly inferior covers of "Little Queenie" certainly helped in that regard. However, "Almost Grown" was always a total jammer to my ears even when I was anything but a Chuck Berry fan. Those backing vocals are my favorite thing about the song & it turns out that Etta James helped out in that department, as well as a young Marvin Gaye as part of Harvey & the New Moonglows. Didn't know that until today. I could try to babble on some more, but that'd be pointless because you know damn well that this 45 kicks all sorts of ass. Might as well duck-walk my way onto the next Chuck Berry 45 now & see how that goes.
Happy Tuesday! I spent a good chunk of my listening power yesterday with Willie Dixon's "I Am the Blues". I came across the track "I Can't Quit You, Baby" while prepping for an unreleased episode of the show and decided to give the full album a listen through. Incredibly catchy, "I Am the Blues" continues a trend I've been finding with a lot of my Blues listening: smooth on the ears and easy to digest. This album features the original recording of "Hoochie Coochie Man" as well as fun tracks "I Ain't Superstitious" and "Spoonful". Today on Balmoral Blues we’ll hear from Phoenix, AZ based bluesman and harmonica player @BobCorritore. Born in Chicago, Corritore’s introduction to the blues came at the age of 12 when he heard @MuddyWatersOfficial on the radio. Soon after he was gifted a harmonica by his younger brother, and began teaching himself to play. In 1981 he relocated to Phoenix, where he formed a duo with fellow musician Louisiana Red. In 1984 he started his radio show, Those Lowdown Blues, which he continues to present. He also maintained a 20-year partnership with former #HowlinWolf drummer Chico Chism, and opened famed Phoenix blues club The Rhythm Room, which now serves as his home base. He is an official endorser of @HohnerMusic harmonicas, and regularly leads master classes. His most recent album, “Crawlin’ Kingsnake”, is a collaboration with fellow blues musician John Primer. Photo by Blues Alley Photo. @JohnPrimerBlues is a veteran Chicago bluesman. Born in Mississippi, he got his musical start singing work songs and church spirituals. After his father’s death in a truck accident, his mother moved to Chicago for work but couldn’t afford to bring a young John and his sister with her. He began frequenting the nearby woods to sing, eventually building himself a diddley bow using broom wire and a brick. Once he turned 18 Primer relocated to Chicago. He soon found a place in his first band, The Maintainers with Pat Rushing, and began booking gigs at West Side bars and clubs. In 1979 he was invited by famed Chicago bluesman #WillieDixon to join his Chicago Blues All-Stars. In 1980 he achieved a childhood dream when he joined Muddy Waters as guitarist and bandleader for his Legendary Blues Band, a position he held until Waters’ death. He released his first solo album, “Poor Man’s Blues”, in 1991, and has appeared on over 100 albums, both solo and as an accompanist. Primer has won numerous awards and is considered a blues great. Moanin’ In The Moonlight - Howlin’ Wolf (1959) 5 out of 5 Stans Howlin’ Wolf’s classic compilation, Moanin’ In The Moonlight, is a veritable bible of essential blues songs that collects his former singles to create a cohesive experience. Acclaimed A and B sides “Moanin’ At Midnight” and “How Many More Years” introduce Wolf’s signature raspy vocals, emotive harmonica playing and the ground breaking guitar work of Willie Johnson. Fun fact, a young Ike Turner plays the piano on both songs showcasing the chops that would help him find later success with the great Tina Turner. “Smokestack Lightnin’” is one of the blues greatest tracks and contains everything that made these old songs so influential and important. McKinley Morganfield, “Muddy Waters”, was born on this day in 1913. He, along with Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf, shaped electric Chicago blues into what it would became during its peak in the 60s. Muddy Waters planted the seeds of British invasion rock n’ roll and blues rock when he and Otis Spann toured England during 1958. Audiences were shocked by the loudness of his performances because, previously, they had only heard acoustic folk blues. This electrified band sound evolved out of necessity of being audible in noisy Chicago clubs; it inspired the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Cream, and The Rolling Stones—who renamed their band after the muddy Waters song, “Rollin’ Stone” The songs on “The Real Folk Blues” were recorded between 1949-1954, but not released on lp until 1965. The record helped introduce modern electric blues to a wider audience—it encapsulates what the Chicago sound was all about! This is a US first pressing in mono. Reissues featured new liner notes and no laminated sleeve. #MuddyWaters 👑 🎸🎤🎶🎼, born April 4th, 1913 is one of the founding fathers of the blues music. Brilliantly talented & innovative Muddy was an original & the Godfather to modern blues & rock & roll. The sensational black American blues singer-songwriter and musician is one of the most important figures in the post-war blues scene, and is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues". His style of playing was quintessential Blues & one of the definitive 1st iterations of rock & roll. Muddy's brilliant chords of blues fusion was described as "Raining Down Delta Beatitude". Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists he admired. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the Chess brothers. In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band featuring #LittleWalter on harmonica, #JimmyRogers on guitar, #ElginEdmonds on drums and #OtisSpann on piano recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and legendary songwriter #WillieDixon. These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready". In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.
