Son but était atteint: - l’uniformité de la couleur, - l’uniformité de la structure, - l’uniformité du matériau employé. Très vite, il s’est rendu compte de toutes les possibilités plastiques que pouvait lui offrir cette forme, en même temps, il découvrait toutes les difficultés matérielles pour la rendre efficace et expressive techniquement. La modulation de la lumière ne s’exprimant plus par une matière, mais par une forme, une forme obtenue par un mouvement, la dite torsion. Il fallut étudier ce mouvement, sa forme exacte, sa restitution fidèle. Pour les bandelettes à mettre en œuvre, le papier fut jugé trop fragile, les matières textile trop peu élastiques, le plastique, plus particulièrement le polyvinyle, ainsi que le métal furent retenus. On l’a parfois oublié : le peintre belge Jef Verheyen (1932-1984) fut un acteur majeur de l’avant-garde des années 50 à 80. Quarante ans après sa mort, le musée des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers, sa ville natale, le KMSKA avec le Muhka, lui consacre une magnifique expo. Même s’il a toujours gardé ses fans, comme Axel Vervoordt, il était temps de rappeler son rôle dans l’Art moderne international. « Essentialiste», membre du groupe Zéro, son art était nourri de métaphysique, de philosophie orientale, toujours en quête de l’essence de la peinture, de la couleur, de la lumière, dans l’infini. L’expo s’appelle d’ailleurs « Fenêtre sur l’infini ». Comme Rothko ou Ad Reinhardt. En fines couches diluées, il poussait à l’extrême les limites de son art. Il est difficile de comprendre comment il parvenait, à l’aide de brosses, à peindre ces couches (semi) transparentes sans laisser de traces de pinceau. Il crée ses propres espaces sans bords définis, noir, gris, brun, mais sans noir absolu, tant les passages d’une tonalité à une autre, d’une intensité à une atmosphère, sont imperceptibles. Plus on regarde certains de ses monochromes, plus on est envahi. On dirait que chaque parcelle est un lieu constamment en mouvement. Il avait trouvé en Luigi Fontana et son « Concetto Spaziale » une âme sœur. Sur une photo ci-jointe, on voit Fontana percer un tableau de Verheyen. Il était aussi proche de Pietro Manzoni et ses recherches sur l’achromie, comme d’Yves Klein et Walter Leblanc. L’expo montre des oeuvres de ceux-ci (photo du « carré bleu » de Klein). Elle montre les liens possibles avec Permeke et Ensor. Après ses monocromes superbes, Verheyen a adopté peu à peu une panchromie, un éventail de toute ses couleurs dans d’insaisissables arcs-en-ciel, halos solaires ou lunaires, en polyptyques. A la fin, il revint à la forme, des formes qui semblent flotter dans un espace illimité. Going to see @muesli_collective's exhibition at the Louvain-la-Neuve university museum @musee.l_ gives you the chance to see their magnificent weeping canvas, a new hanging arrangement, experiments with new shades (that blue 💙), or to discover some very strange rainbow substances sliding down the windows and some ice floe water preciously locked away in an enigmatic and beautiful vial. Then there's a little poem of my own that the muesli are doing me the honour of displaying. But it's also an opportunity to visit the museum's permanent collection, covering the history of art from ancient Greece to the 20th century. With works by Belgian artists that are a pleasure to revisit, and even (oh, surprise!) works by women artists! #internationalwomensday 😉 #womenartists So it's well worth a look, and runs until 14 April 2024. *** Aller voir l’exposition de @muesli_collective au musée universitaire de Louvain-la-Neuve @musee.l_ c’est se donner l’occasion de voir leur magnifique toile qui pleure, un nouveau dispositif d’accrochage, des essais dans de nouvelles teintes (ce bleu 💙), ou encore de découvrir des substances arc-en-ciel très étranges qui glissent sur les vitres, et de l’eau de banquise enfermée précieusement dans une fiole énigmatique et belle. Mais c’est aussi l’occasion de visiter la collection permanente du musée, qui fait le tour de l’histoire de l’art, de la Grèce antique au 20ème siècle. Walter Leblanc spent his formative years at the @royalacademyantwerp , benefiting from an exceptionally fertile environment that enabled him to refine his skills and cultivate a deep understanding of tradition and techniques. In 1949-51, he studies drawing with Antoon Marstboom and, at his father's insistence, also studies advertising with Franck Mortelmans. From 1951 to 1953, he continues to study drawing, first with Victor Dolphyn and then with Carlo De Roover, and engraving with René De Coninck. He finishes his studies at the Academy in 1954, after a final year of drawing and painting with Gustave De Bruyn, and engraving and ceramics with Olivier Strebelle.
