Sacrofire - Symphonies… (1997, Soundland Productions) Getting back on track with some death doom tonight. With that cover art and album title, you would be forgiven for thinking this was some long lost late 90s symphonic black metal album. Well, I suppose you would be partially correct in that it is a long lost gem. However, it sits firmly in the death metal camp, or death doom to be precise. And it is heavy as hell! There is not much known about this Floridian band. As you can see from the booklet, there is no mention of the band members. Whoever they were, they were influenced by range of styles going by the ‘greetings’. Vocally, think of early Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost. Musically, this has a lot of similarities with the likes of Cianide and some of the early Dutch death doom scene. Interestingly, along with the intro, the band add the occasional keyboard parts on Descent Of A Prophetic Vision, but they are fleeting and not at all out of place. They just add another flavour to the dramatic assault. And what an assault this is. The riffs, albeit of a mid-paced tempo for the most part, will have you head banging along and pumping your fist throughout the 5 main songs here. A long lost gem in the death doom scene, heck in US metal. LOSS, "Life Without Hope... Death Without Reason" (10"MLP, 2010 - Parasitic Records). Another purchase from the Extreme Record Fair was the reissue of the 2004 demo from this Nashville, Tennessee Funeral Doom/Death Metal act. I really discovered then with their split with NECROS CHRISTOS and I've tried to get some of their releases since then. LOSS is like a sad and destructive tornado for the senses.... they are slooooooow, deeeeeep, down tuned and heavy, absolutely heavy! They are bleak and grievous and particularly droning in their doomy way. I find some similarities with things like WINTER or THERGOTHON or MOURNFUL CONGREGATION. And a good way to achieve some tranquility when you're tired after a stressing day at work... or maybe the contrary! Hehehe... Dream Unending "Tide Turns Eternal" -- 2021 full-length debut from "dream-doom" duo. Dream Unending are a member of Innumerable Forms and Tomb Mold playing traditional Peaceville Three death/doom with psychedelic and shoegaze elements. No, this isn't death metal "Sunbather." The tempos are definitely death/doom, but twelve-string guitars are layered over the heavy stomp of the drums and bass to create delicate and ethereal melodies that flutter above the chaos below. Worm "Foreverglade" -- 2021 full-length from US one-man project. Boy is this album hyped. It's pretty darn good. I was lukewarm on its blackened doom predecessor "Gloomlord," but this strips away a lot of the blackened elements and instead updates the death/doom and funeral doom sound of bands like Skepticism, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema. It sounds awesome - the guitars and keyboards are eerie and the drums are thunderous. I think it's the second best death/doom album of the year and it's frankly ridiculous that I thought there was a better death/doom album this year. This does have the best guitar solos of ANY other album this year. Period. The songwriting is also amazing - it pays homage to the sounds of olde without being straight aping. Goatlord - Reflections of the Solstice (1991, Turbo Music) Today has been damp, cold and dark, so quite apt for some murky blackened doomy death metal, the old school way. The primitive music and sludgy mix and production made this stand out at the time. However, it’s a style that has since been imitated, but never quite reproducing the occult feel of this album. Novembers Doom - Amid It’s Hallowed Mirth (1995, Avantgarde Music) Back to some doom after spending the afternoon listening to old school Spanish black metal. The debut album from this long standing US band just pummels throughout. The guitar riffs are thick and heavy. Paul Kuhr’s vocals are superb, just deep and guttural, but also decipherable. This is proper old school 90s death doom done right. Winter - Into Darkness (1992, Nuclear Blast Records) What a raw, bleak, feral and bludgeoning album! The first doom death album? Definitely up there with the likes of Sempiternal Deathreign’s The Spooky Gloom and Delirium’s Zzooouhh. Even the artwork and layout screams desolation and despair. Originally released in 1990 on the US label, Future Shock, this is the European version released in 1992 by Nuclear Blast. It is yet another album that the Death Is Just The Beginning 2 compilation introduced me to. It featured the album opener, Oppression Freedom, and was one of the heaviest songs I had heard up til that point. I didn’t know what to make of it originally, but the more I listened the more I realized how great it sounded. As soon as I could save up the money, I bought the CD; now one of the oldest in my collection. Thorns of the Carrion - The Gardens of Dead Winter (1994, Wild Rags Records) One of the best US death doom bands. This is their debut album that was, I believe, a remaster of their demo of the same name with some extra live tracks. This is one slow, heavy, impenetrable album. The guitar tone is just crushing, love it! While the music is unmistakably doom it is the vocals that add the death metal element. The use of keyboards and violin adds a sense of frailty and also serve as a brief reprieve from the weight of the murky riffs.
