“As the previous reviewer pointed out, the bassist, PAUL WEBB, is really something else. His snappy style reminds me of BRIAN ENO’s work on the Talking Heads’ album Remain in Light, or of Tony Levin, or even DAVID GILMOUR when it comes to his fretless bass work (I kept thinking of his solo album About Face as I listened to The Party’s Over)—but he also does some excellent fretless bass work that stands out throughout the album. As I prepared my notes for the review, I can barely count the number of times I wrote some note about the basslines, on songs including “Talk Talk” itself, “Today”, “The Party’s Over”, “Have You Heard the News?”, and “Candy”. Well yes I do and I think this is a much maligned record, distorted by the colosal single “Orinocho Flow” and at times heavy handed production. So much of the record leans into Celtic spirituality and at times it has more in common with @sigurros or Talk Talk’s “Spirit of Eden” which was released on the same day. Starting their career producing some highly commercial (although entertaining) new wave, they then explored some unknown territories that mixed jazz, classical and ambient. It is an anti-heroin song inspired by singer Mark Hollis who knew people in his entourage who thought they could control the addiction but ended up ruining their lives. Against Hollis's wishes the record company edited the song to promote the album as a single. Some music critics consider "Spirit of Eden" and its 1991 follow-up "Laughing Stock" influential to the post-rock genre influencing artists like Sigur Rós, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Low and latter-period Radiohead. "I Believe In You" était le seul single de leur superbe quatrième album studio, "Spirit of Eden". It’s presented as a Japanese pressing with obi and insert on heavy vinyl. The second (purple) disc includes the three superb contemporary non album b-sides* plus three tracks from the Live At Montreux Jazz Festival 1986 DVD (performance and transfer to vinyl is faultless). My eternal regret is never having made it to one of their shows. Up there in my ten favourite albums list - and the best Talk Talk album, which is high praise when you know what they did next... it’s what audio perfection sounds like. Purchased in Berkeley, California. *these three tracks are essential. Mastering this skill is absolutely LIFE CHANGING! But what does being in the asking really mean? Being in the asking doesn’t just mean asking questions, but it means giving other people the floor to place boundaries upon your conversation. Consider someone calling to vent to you. As they share their problems, you might identify several moments where you could offer solutions or support. But before you interject anything, let’s try being in the asking by saying something along the lines of: “Did you want me to listen and hold space for you, did you want me to offer advise and help solve the issues, or did you want me to vent and let off steam with you?” This way, you are allowing the other person to take control and let you know what it is that they need in this moment. Communication is clear, everyone knows their boundaries, and now you can move on and know how you get to stand within this conversation. Now flipping the narrative, if you are in need of a conversation and you call a friend, you can be in the asking by sharing why you called (your agenda) and if they have the space for the conversation. I will revisit some questions to make sure the boundaries haven’t changed as the conversation has moved along. This may look as me asking if it’s okay if I give some advise before I offer the advise, or me stopping part way through my venting to ensure the other person is present and still on board for supporting me. Being in the asking saves so much heartache and time. It allows for honesty, trust, and effective communication.
