DEAR AGNES AYRES 🌹 Remembering dear Agnes Ayres, who passed on Christmas Day in 1940 from a cerebral hemorrhage. She was only 48 years old. She was cremated and interred at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in the Chapel Columbarium. Agnes and Rudy were very good friends. In fact, Rudy was the Godfather of Agnes and Manuel Reachi’s daughter Maria. She also named her dog “Tino” after Rudy. She was also gracious enough to play Diana again in “The Son of the Sheik,” (1926) not long after giving birth to her daughter Maria. His final film, “The Son of the Sheik” (1926), was released to the public shortly after his death, to an outpouring of mourning throughout Hollywood. Releasing a film after the death of an actor is a delicate situation, especially when the actor has died young. Only 31 years old, Rudolph Valentino had lived just long enough to promote his final film, dying on August 23, 1926 following emergency surgery for appendicitis. Hollywood had lost its primary dreamboat actor, causing ripples of grief to spread. 100,000 people flooded the streets for his funeral ceremony. United Artists debated whether releasing “The Son of the Sheik” was the right move while fans were still in mourning, but the public insisted on the film’s release. Fans swamped theaters all over the U.S. for one more chance to watch their beloved Valentino on the big screen. This is Vilma Bánky, a Hungarian silent film actress whose beauty earned her the nickname of "The Hungarian Rhapsody." Her biggest claim to fame was her starring role opposite Rudolph Valentino in "The Son of the Sheik" in 1926 (Valentino's last film). But she spoke broken English, in a thick Hungarian accent. This ended her acting career when the talkies came. However, Bánky had just wedded actor Rod La Rocque and wanted to invest more time into her married life. The Son of the Sheik (1926) is the oldest sequel ever inducted into the National Film Registry. When it went into production, Hollywood sequels were highly unusual, but Douglas Fairbanks had just broken new ground with with his hit Don Q, The Son of Zorro (1925), a sequel to The Mark of Zorro (1920). United Artists decided to take a chance on a followup to Valentino’s massive hit, The Sheik (1921). In The Son of the Sheik, Rudy displays impressive acting chops by reprising his original role, now as a middle aged man, as well as playing his son Ahmed, the titular character. His makeup for the role of the father was so convincing that it is said that Valentino got a kick out of roaming around the studio unrecognized. One of the many delights of The Son of the Sheik is the comic performance of Karl Dane as Ramadan. Dane made his film debut in 1917, and quickly became known for playing German villains in World War I dramas and serials. He rose to greater prominence with his supporting role in King Vidor's "The Big Parade" (1925) opposite John Gilbert, where his comedic and dramatic abilities stood out. Sadly, his Danish accent led to a decline in roles during the early sound era, and MGM soon terminated his contract. Following a further run of bad luck, Dane died of a self-inflicted gun wound in 1934. He is interred at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, 26 years after his death. This event may sell out! That’s the steely-eyed Rudolph Valentino exposing his manly chest to Vilma Banky (there’s should be an apostrophe over the “a” in Banky but I have no idea how to do one in Instagram…and don’t want to know). Anyway, “Son of the Sheik” was a sequel to “The Sheik” (1921) and was an even bigger hit, Valentino having passed away two weeks before its release. He was just 31. Rudolph Valentino personally chose his co-star, Hungarian born Vilma Banky, for The Son of the Sheik, and the real attraction between the performers is readily apparent in the film. When she was discovered by Samuel Goldwyn, Banky spoke almost no English, so Goldwyn is said to have taught her to answer "Lamp chops and pineapple" to all reporters' questions. Her extravagant 1927 wedding to silent film star Rod La Roque was arranged and paid for as a publicity stunt by Goldwyn. Cecil B. DeMille was best man and Louella Parsons was matron of honor. The wedding was staged like a film premier on a Hollywood sound stage, with guests in the "cheap seats" reportedly served papier mache chicken. Her career did not survive the change to talkies, but her marriage to Rod LaRoque lasted nearly 50 years, until La Roque's death in 1969. Vilma Banky passed away in 1991.
