Mian (55) mies, Boris, sanoo haluavansa 30 yhteisen vuoden kälkeen paussin avioliitosta. Sen hän saa ja Mia joutuu tapahtumien johdosts hoitoon. Tervehdyttyään riittävästi seuraa kesä, johon ei kuulu miehiä eikä edes poikia. Itseäni kesän tapahtumista kiinnosti erityisesti hänen tytöille ohjaamansa runopaja. WHAT I LOVED (2003) by Siri Hustvedt 2024: Book 23 Sometimes rereading a book can be so instructive. I read this one around the time it came out and I remember not really liking it at the time. Which makes it odd choice to read again but @redroomreflections had posted about it and I realised quite a lot of it had stuck with me over the 20 years: not something that’s always true about books I liked. One thing that was really strange was that I absolutely remembered this book as having a massive pace switch where it goes from a relatively restrained first half concerned with the entangled love lives of New York artists to an absolutely thriller styled page turner about one of the children of the lead characters getting caught up in murder and crime. Guess what? It’s not like that at all! In fact I found the book a lot more coherent, though there are bits towards the end where the murder intrigue threatens to capsize the book. I think I can guess why this change in reading happened: when I was in my early 20s reading it for the first time it must have been my own interest in the focus on young people in the second half that made it read like a thriller. Now that the world of family life in middle age is more relevant, the first half become much more compelling. I’m really glad I came back to it - thanks to @redroomreflections for prompting it. #sirihustvedt #whatiloved

C'est avec beaucoup d'émotion que je fais cette publication. J'ai fait la découverte de Paul Auster en cours de littérature comparée lors de ma 1ère année de fac. Je devais étudier "Le voyage d'Anna Blume". Un coup de foudre. Quel plaisir alors pour moi de retrouver cet être de papier, une dernière fois. Paul Auster nous offre une œuvre riche, intimiste dans laquelle il ne se passe rien en termes d'action. Comme souvent le dedans se confronte au dehors. Comme souvent, l'espace du dedans remporte la victoire. Baumgartner, le personnage éponyme est un professeur de philosophie émérite qui vit mal la disparition de sa femme, Anna Blume, qui comme moi était née un 7 mai. Une poétesse dont la vie a été rompue à l'âge de 57 ans peut-être par des Parques un peu trop capricieuses. Pour combler le vide, il s'occupe : il écrit et se laisse porter par le flux de ses pensées. Dans cet ultime récit, on retrouve le Paul Auster de ses débuts et ses thèmes fétiches : l'amour et la mort, le désir qui envahit le corps, l'écriture ou encore la disparition. Lire Paul Auster c'est errer dans son scriptorium et dans son âme mais il nous rappelle toujours à un moment que le roman a pour fonction principale de questionner la réalité. Merci à vous M. Y para cerrar, #botchan de #soseki no sé si voy a llegar a leerlo, pero prefiero viajar con libros de más que de menos… Por primera vez en años, no me acompaña Ágatha, una sensación distinta esta vez. When I was about 20, I read New York Trilogy and was completely flabbergasted. Nothing around me or inside me was the same when I closed that book after reading the final page. Over the years I’ve read almost all his books and I’ve been disappointed a few times wondering what road he chose to suddenly take. I wasn’t always walking beside him. But that first experience and epiphany when reading NY Trilogy stayed with me during all these years and I’m truly mourning the loss of him. The one and only Paul Auster. Es ist eigentlich ein großer Zufall, dass ich ein von Paul Auster signiertes Buch zuhause habe - ich lasse mir nur ganz selten Bücher signieren. (meist nur von Kolleg*innen, die ich persönlich kenne) Ich war aber damals mit einer Freundin bei seiner Lesung im Ronacher und sie wollte ein Autogramm. Also begleitete ich sie, und da wir sehr schnell waren und die Schlange noch nicht lang, holte ich mir auch eines von ihm. Seither bin ich darüber sehr froh. Con las “casualidades” de Auster dando vueltas en mis elecciones libreras, este posteo en su memoria ❤️ 🍿Cabalgando entre la ficción y la autobiografía, en “Baumgartner”, el autor nos deja un personaje entrañable, un profesor y escritor viudo y jubilado que es una eminencia, y a través del cual nos hace reflexionar sobre el significado del paso del tiempo, sobre todo cuando la vida está próxima a concluir. Las etapas del duelo, los derroteros de la memoria y lo que más caló: que las riendas de nuestra vida siempre están a nuestro alcance. Otros de los grandes temas de la novela es cómo amamos en las distintas etapas y lo que representa amar a otra persona. Three days before Paul Auster died, CJ Sansom died. I haven't seen any posts about CJ Sansom, but I have seen several about Paul Auster. And um...well. I didn't like the two books of Paul Auster's I read and I knew that must be a bad thing somehow because he was married to the smartest woman writer, Siri Hustvedt, whose books I value enormously. But Auster...I can't even remember what it was. Some vague sense that either he was pretentious or I was a bit dof (South African word for not very bright.) Now that I have seen the Insta friends who have expressed sadness and written about how much Auster meant to them, my suspicion that me not like him was a bad thing has been confirmed. I will have to try again maybe. Feel free to tell me where to start (again) with Auster. I, meanwhile, have been sorry about the loss of CJ Sansom, whose wonderful books about the lawyer Matthew Shardlake negotiating crime and politics in Tudor England I have loved. Me temo que muchos de los profesionales de las letras, los medios y la crítica que han compartido, comentado o dejado su corazoncito digital en la publicación de Siri Hustvedt en Instagram no se han dado por aludidos. Las palabras de la autora tras la muerte de su marido, Paul Auster, no sólo están llenas de dignidad, amor, verdad y sabiduría, sino que, si se leen con humildad y atención (su carta abierta es extensa y merece la pena ir más allá del pie de foto para seguir el hilo completo), también le arrean un par de certeros y necesarios bofetones a la hipocresía y al oportunismo de todos esos cortesanos profesionales, tan poco amigos de la autocrítica o la simple decencia. Lo más triste es que volverán a hacerlo una y mil veces, porque están por todas partes, con voz y voto en el negocio del libro, pero siguen sin entender nada de literatura. Recods del futur Siri Hustvedt Traducció de Ferran Ràfols 2019 (1) @edicions_62 404 p. 4/5⭐️ I jo llegint aquesta obra de Siri Hustvedt mentre s'apagava la del seu marit, l'admirat Paul Auster😪 No havia llegit encara res de la Siri i tenia clar que aquest segon #Maignordamericà havia de caure sí o sí, així que vaig anar a la biblio i em vaig endur aquests records del futur. He de dir que només el títol sol ja em va captivar i, com he dit volia conèixer a aquesta autora d'ascendència nòrdica, feminista i activista. Una novel·la autobiogràfica dels anys de joventut, quan des de la seva Minnessota natal va traslladar-se a Nova York per començar a escriure. Allà va conèixer gent nova, entre elles una veïna, Lucy, amb una història personal difícil, allà passarà per situacions precàries i patirà un ensurt greu que la traumatitzarà i marcarà per sempre. Un text on s'alternen els records, la novel·la que escriu (completament supeditada al seu estat d'ànim), i la transcripció dels diaris personals d'aquella època, en els quals es va dibuixant l'autora, la dona, la persona que és i era. Un exercici, el de la retrospecció o el de viatjar al passat que de tant en tant cal fer per no oblidar el que som i d'on venim perquè "El passat és fràgil, fràgil com els ossos que es fan trencadissos amb l'edat, com fantasmes vistos per la finestra o en somnis que en el moment de llevar-te es descomponen i que l'únic que expressen és un sentiment d'incomoditat o d'angoixa, o més rarament, una mena de satisfacció espectral". M'ha agradat molt la part autobiogràfica i els retalls del diari personal, però no he acabat d'entrar en la novel·la que escrivia. Vull suposar que posant-la l'autora pretenia fer palès el seu procés creatiu a l'hora d'escriure, si més no així ho he interpretat. Heu llegit aquests records del futur? Quel vocione non lo ricordo. Ho fotografato Paul Auster nel 2008 a Capri, in occasione del festival letterario “Le conversazioni”. Tre giorni sull’isola a ritrarre mostri sacri della letteratura. Junot Diaz aveva appena vinto il Pulitzer e forse un po’ se la tirava. Ricordo una simpatica chiacchierata con l’umilissimo e britannicissimo Patrick McGrath, autore di “Follia”. Ma non ricordo il vocione profondo di Auster. Dopo quelle foto in hotel, abbiamo fatto una passeggiata con sua moglie, la scrittrice Siri Hustvedt, per qualche altro scatto all’aperto, ma non ricordo alcuna conversazione. Probabilmente ci siamo limitati a scambiare informazioni essenziali e qualche gesto o cenno con la testa. Una faccia come la sua poi potrei passare ore ad osservarla e tentare di anagrammarla. Quando sono nervoso tendo a parlare. I have been the voice of many famous writers, but being the voice of Paul Auster was somewhat special. I met him in Granada, with his wife @sirihustvedt and his daughter @sophieauster, a beautiful family. We met again in Oviedo in 2006, the first time I worked for the @fundacionprincesadeasturias, and he did remember that I had been his interpreter at Federico Garcia Lorca’s house. When Siri received the Award five years ago, I also became her voice. Today she has published a message (with this picture) here in @instagram that we should all read and reflect upon. My best wishes travel all the way to New York and I hope they reach Siri and Sophie in this difficult moment. The world will be less complete without Paul Auster. Through his literature I got in contact with books which were written by his wife @sirihustvedt, Don DeLillo, Edgar Allan Poe or James Joyce who also opened a complete new inner world to me. La première chose que j'ai faite en me levant c'est mettre Paul Auster juste à côté de Siri Hustvedt dans ma bibliothèque. Ils resteront ainsi pour longtemps. Je les ai croisés à Paris, rue Mouffetard il y a 15 ans. Paul Auster et moi on se tenait tous les deux debout au fond de la librairie, alors que je découvrais sa femme (et quelle découverte, d'ailleurs !), lui je le connaissais déjà. Il m'a dédicacé Brooklyn Follies. Il a aimé mon prénom et s'était appliqué à l'écrire en lettres capitales. J'ai longtemps rêvé de cette vie de couple : écrire à New York, puis voyager pour parler de ses livres. J'étais et reste sous le charme de ce couple, et il faut dire que leurs textes sont à leur image, d'une grande beauté, une façon de captiver chacun à leur façon, tout en formant un tout fort et cohérent. Les romans de Paul Auster ont été de formidables compagnons de voyage (spirituel comme terrestre). Inventif, inspirant, illusioniste. Paul Auster, Paul Auster, Paul Auster.
