Karen, Shizue, and Shirley (2nd pic) at the old Bush Garden 😍✨ Sharing over 6 decades of memories at Bush Garden together!! Shizue started at Bush in the 1960’s and worked until the early 90’s. Back then it was not only a place of work, but a community for Japanese immigrants to feel a piece of home after moving to Seattle. She and Karen met when Karen started working at Bush in 1969, and Shirley joining in the 90’s. 😍 We are carrying these memories with us into the new space, to honor the past and remind us that Community is always the center of Bush Garden’s mission. #herstory #bushgarden #bushgardenseattle #seattlecid #seattlehistory #seattle #seattlehistory

From facing discrimination at every turn to hustling hard to make their dreams a reality, these folks have been through it all. Back when the Smith Tower was the tallest building in Seattle! 😲 Wow - what a cool ass shot! 😂 I’ve always been ‘enamored’ over this building, telling my boys about its history, like all their lives when we drove thru the city. (that for 50+ years it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi - I find that fascinating!!) Apparently I said it so much that they like to taunt me about it today. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ and no! I’ve still NEVER visited the dang place either 🙄 Ps) I still find it fascinating, don’t you?! • • #smithtower #seattle #seattlewashington #SeattleHistory

📢 Want to Support Preservation in the C-ID? Well, here’s your chance! 🏛️ Historic Seattle submitted a landmark nomination application for the former INS Building (815 Seattle Blvd S.) in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. The building has been home to Inscape arts and culture center since 2010. On Wednesday, June 5, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board will consider the nomination for landmark status and the Board loves to hear from the community! 🙌 We need your voice to support our nomination! 🗣️ ✉️ Submit written comments to City Historic Preservation Officer Sarah Sodt (email to [email protected]) by May 31. 📜 Brief history: Short for Immigration & Naturalization Service, the former INS Building (originally known as the U.S. Immigrant and Assay Office) served as Seattle’s detention and processing center for immigrants from 1931 until 2004. In 2008, a group of private investors purchased the building and transformed it into an arts and culture center. Known as Inscape Arts, this place matters not only for the complex histories it contains but also as an example of how art and community can be the impetus for both recognizing the difficult past and supporting culture and creative space. Historic Seattle’s HeartBomb in February with Friends of Inscape took place in front of the building. ❤️ 🏢 The former INS Building has a high level of integrity and ability to convey significance, and we believe the property meets four of the six designation standards of the Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. 🔑 INS Holdings (as property owner) has generally been a good steward of the INS Building. Its use as arts and culture space after federal government ownership has been an excellent example of the adaptive reuse of this historic building. The property owner placed the property on the market a couple years ago, but it did not sell. Its future as arts and culture space depends on who owns the property. While landmark designation does not dictate use, we still believe obtaining this status will help preserve the building for the future. 🏛️(caption cont. in comments)

Thanks to Ruby de Luna @kuowruby for including me in this @kuow piece about the upcoming re-opening of Bush Garden! (full article/audio at link in bio). This OG karaoke bar & restaurant has been hugely influential in my life - a second home where I’ve learned many lessons & made lifelong friendships. “(Karen) Sakata said she’s saved items that may be recognizable to longtime patrons — the shoji screen, the torii gate, and many of the original fixtures — to keep the sense of the old space. “It’s not going to be the old place; it never will be,” Sakata said. Still, she wants to incorporate Bush’s rich past with the present. “But how do we create this new space and energy in here is what I’m really, really looking forward to.”…. “These types of places are even more important after we’ve been isolated and disconnected,” Brothers said. “And I feel like we have to maintain and nurture these places, otherwise they go away.” Let’s all go celebrate & support Aunty Karen and Bush when it un-vanishes later this year - in its new home at Uncle Bob’s Place in the Chinatown-International District! 🎉🍻🎤⛩️ #bushgarden #bushgardenseattle #chinatowninternationaldistrict #unclebobsantos #seattlecommunity #seattlehistory #seattleculture #seattlecharacter #seattlesoul #seattlekaraoke #seattle #KUOW #oldseattle #vanishingseattle #unvanishingseattle #notvanishingseattle

Rob and Justin Peterson had a problem. The brothers run three bars in Tacoma, including one named 1111. It's billed as "your favorite local dive bar." In a city where space is money, one part of the bar wasn't being used. "It's kind of by the kitchen, where the servers pass by. And nobody in the bar wanted to sit back there," Rob said. Justin had an idea. The brothers had a collection of beer memorabilia, specifically Rainier Beer. So they built a cabinet and filled it with Rainier swag. One day a customer brought in an old DVD of Rainier commercials from the '70s and '80s. The brothers put a TV in the center of the cabinet and played the ads on a loop. "Now it’s like the most popular place to sit in the bar," Rob said. #NotVanishingSeattle: Eastlake Zoo Tavern! The Eastlake Zoo Tavern opened in 1974 at the corner of Eastlake Avenue East and East Lynn Street, in a 1902 building that had housed various bars and taverns since the mid-1930s. In 1974, a group of individuals, many from the nearby “hippie” houseboat community in Eastlake, acquired the building and opened the Eastlake Zoo as an employee co-op. Ownership percentage was based on the number of hours worked and positions, which were held in a rotation. The venue has changed little in 50 years of business, still featuring a cash-only bar serving beer and wine only, the same eclectic décor, and a variety of bar games, as shown in these photos taken back in 2007. Early on, the venue hosted live band performances, but later used that space to expand its game area, which includes pool tables and a snooker table, darts, shuffleboard, ping-pong, Skee-Ball, and other arcade games. Howard Brown (image two), who had been a member of the co-op, took over operations and continues to run the Eastlake Zoo Tavern today. And this week, Howard and the Eastlake Zoo are celebrating 50 years of beers! #OnThisDay in 1956, Tacoma distance swimmer Bert Thomas swam 18.5 miles from West Seattle to Old Town Dock. The swim lasted 15 hours, 23 minutes in 40 degree water. Two support craft assisted his journey, the "Sharon Two" and "Memories." His wife Mary and daughter Sharon were aboard one of the vessels, feeding Bert through a tube every hour, and lighting a cigarette that he smoked while continuing the swim on his back. Bert previously was the first man in history to swim 19 miles from Port Angeles to Victoria BC. The former Marine was determined to complete this Seattle to Tacoma swim on his third try as a belated Mother's Day gift for his mom, Nadine Dimond. A crowd of 5,000 waited below Old Tacoma Dock at 3am on May 15, 1956 to see the last lap of Bert's swim. They also raised $1500 to finance his future swimming plans, including cross the English Channel. Photos from the archives of @TacomaLibrary: * Bert Thomas embraces his wife Mary after completing his historic swim * Bert's mother Nadine Dimond hugs her son after his swim from Seattle to Tacoma * The crowd in Old Town Tacoma awaiting Bert Thomas' arrival.

Attn: Seattle art and history buffs! These hefty chunks of concrete facade came from Seattle's Music Hall Theatre, which stood on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Olive Way from 1929-1992. Pieces of the facade were sold by auction after the demolition, and a few have found their way to Earthwise 32 years later! They were previously used as garden decor, though future possibilities for these pieces don't end there! These remarkable artifacts are ripe with creative reuse potential! More information about the Music Hall Theatre can be found online, and the Library of Congress records of the building are linked here: https://memory.loc.gov/master/pnp/habshaer/wa/wa0300/wa0344/data/wa0344data.pdf Sizes and prices vary, see individual listings Seattle $25-$150 More info and photos here: https://ewsalvage.com/inventory/?search=old%20music%20hall #SeattleHistory #MusicHallTheatre #OldSeattle #Demolition #Salvage #Seattle #SeattleArts #SeattleMusic #SeattleVenues #Facade

Green Lake 9/23 (I'm way, way behind here): 10.4 miles, 10 libraries, 3 pantries, 1 dog treat spot I was going to go to the @fremontartscouncil Luminata (and did), but spent a few hours wandering the streets first, to make sure I'd covered a bit of additional ground. What did I find.... -The lake itself, and some squirrels I spent time communing with -Flamingos. So many flamingos and dinosaurs, seemingly competing -A squash impaled on a road sign. I don't know why. -Stray furniture hanging out in green strips throughout the area, in case you need a desk to study at on the side of a hill -A couple very nice pantries set up in surprising locations (including the giant B in front of Bishop Blanchet High) -and the Luminata, which has its own magic to it Running total at this point: 1406 libraries (and stuff) #Seattle #Seattlewalks #Seattlehistory #freelittleartgallery #littlefreelibrary #littlefreepantry #wandering #bookstagram #sidewalkjoy #streetart #librariesofinstagram

The sky’s awake, so I’m awake. 🌌 . Friday: after work I went and bought a new mattress! Yay!! Mine is way past due to be replaced. It’s arriving today ( Monday). Then I stayed up til about 12:30 and went outside not expecting to see anything… but to my surprise, there was an Aurora Borealis. I didn’t think we’d actually get to see it. It was beautiful. Big bucket list item. . Saturday: I went to check out the @georgetownsteamplant during its open house (they do it once a month). Please follow on insta or sign up for their newsletter. It’s so amazing to see in person. It was a photographers dream. I spent about 2 hrs just walking around, talking to people, and taking photos. I wonder if my grandpa ever visited it. Especially since it’s run by Seattle City Light. I then spent the rest of the day trying to stay cool. It was pretty hot outside. Although the steam plant was the perfect temp. 😜. For dinner, I went to check out @crawfishhouse_seattle and had Crawfish Etouffee for the first time!! I don’t have anything to compare it to, but it was delicious to me. . Sunday: I had the opportunity to capture a model friends engagement! Her (now) fiancé messaged me on insta a few weeks ago and asked if I’d be able to cover it. I was at work at the time and was so excited that I squealed. 😅. I’m so glad I could be there for such a special moment and capture it for them. 💕. They’re so sweet together and I wish them every happiness. Afterward, I walked over to the @seajpnsgarden to view the wisteria that was in peak bloom. It was so beautiful. 😍. Like the weirdo I am, as I was walking around the garden, I offered to take photos of people with their moms, families, and s/o on their phones. No one refused me either. It made me feel good to help others capture their day. My mom and I couldn’t spend the day together, but I was there for a bunch of other moms and families. 🥰. It was a lovely day. . I can’t wait for my new mattress to be delivered and to get a better nights sleep. 🛌
