On May 31, βRemember the Removalβ cyclists and staff from the Cherokee Nation and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians toured the Cowee Mound site near Franklin, North Carolina, with Dr. Brett Riggs and President of the National Trail of Tears Association Jack Baker. The team walked the road Cherokee people used as they were marched from Fort Lindsey in Swain County to Fort Butler near Murphy, North Carolina, in June 1838 before being pushed to Indian Territory. The team will travel to Georgia on June 2 and begin their journey from Georgia to Oklahoma on June 3 traveling through seven states to retrace the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears. #RTR2024 #NeverForget

Remember the Removal riders from the Cherokee Nation and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians met in-person for the first time today in Cherokee, North Carolina! π΄ββοΈπ΄ββοΈβ€οΈ #RTR2024 The day began with an early breakfast prepared by our friends at Birdtown Recreation, followed by team-building and bonding activities, and concluded with a blessing ceremony and send-off celebration at Kituwah Mound! Some riders from the inaugural 1984 Remember the Removal Bike Ride joined the send-off celebration and spoke to the riders about the significance and lifelong impact of the ride. These riders are getting to know each other better as they gear up for the start of the ride!
