Well, this kinda hurt 🥴😬 On June 15th 1985, Rembrandt's Danaë was attacked. It was slashed with a knife twice and sulfuric acid was splashed against the painting, causing the paint to drip down the canvas. I've read somewhere that roughly 27% of the painting had been destroyed. Restoring it took 12 years & the piece is since being kept behind amoured glass to prevent further attacks. Going into this challenge for #rembrandt125years by @rembrandtartistpaint I knew that my version of the painting had to be "destroyed" in the end. I knew almost the entire figure was gonna be covered up, so I didn't spend too much time on it in the first place. The Poverty Knob Bride For the March/April @rembrandtartistpaint challenge I used a small black and white photograph of my grandparents from their wedding day in the 1950s and used the background and the clothing colours Rembrandt used in his Jewish Bride painting. My grandparents lived in an area known locally as Poverty Knob in England’s West Midlands. They were poor but happy and are frequent inspirations in my work. Something I normally never paint, a person. Quite a challenge, but one I loved to take on! Because the painting is known as ‘The Jewish Bride’, I decided to only paint her.
