A glorious day of sunshine… a bit too hot for the dogs but I’m not complaining and don’t want the rain back!!! All the Activity groups did fantastic on the new competition height equipment, I’m so proud of them all. Have to give a shout out to the oldies group who I was worried about all last night and was close to dropping all the heights for them. They loved it and although we took it steady they proved that conditioning exercises and staying active really help to maintain their fitness.

Let's talk about resting. When I first got a puppy I was told a tired dog is a happy dog. Well...I disagree. Here is why: When you give your dog TOO much exercise and high energy games then they crave that more. They don't know what to do with themselves if there is no activity happening. These 'doer' dogs need to be taught how to rest. How do I do this? 1. More crate time-with a kong, bone, licky mat (if they won't eat it) 2. Put them in a room where there are limited choices (no window access to the front lawn and lower traffic volume) 3. Remember that barking is normal behavior for dogs. It is a form of communication. Most dogs bark some of the time and often for very good reasons. Here are some of the most common: 1. They are excited! There are many potential triggers for excitement barking. Perhaps your dog barks when you first come home or when a friend comes to the door. 2. They want something. This is often called demand barking, but in my house, we call it bossy barking. 3. Demand barking is also common when training with food – when dogs get frustrated because the treats aren’t coming fast enough, for example, they may bark to remind you to keep the food flowing. Barking is also one of the ways that dogs have to ask for what they want or need. A dog may bark when she needs to go outside to potty, and this may be a very good thing! 4. They are alerting us to something. Most dogs alert-bark to some degree. They may bark when someone comes up to the house, or when there is an unusual noise, or when another dog in the neighborhood barks. 5. They are afraid. We all have things that scare us and so do our dogs. Understand what your dog is afraid of and either help them to overcome their fears or try to avoid what they are afraid of. 6. They don’t do well when alone. Many dogs will experiment with barking when they are alone and bored. Maybe they bark at the squirrels or the neighbor’s dog. Boredom barking often has elements of alert barking, excitement barking, or demand barking. But barking when home alone can also be a symptom of separation distress or anxiety. This happy boy is Obi and he started his behaviour modification program today to work through some big happy feelings towards dogs! He enjoys doing some zoomies and standing like a kangaroo when he sees or hears a dog and he likes to pull hard and low! We will be building his food motivation and using his love for toys and play to build more value to his handlers. We worked on leash pressure, engagement and how to be clear and consistent in our communication so that Obi understands what’s expected of him! THE THING YOUR DOG TRAINER MIGHT NOT TELL YOU.... We're always thinking about you and your dogs because we care. 🥰🐶🐶 As busy as my day might be, I often think about my clients and their dogs, even those I haven't heard from in a while, because I genuinely care about how they are getting on. Sometimes, I might be reading something which reminds me of them; sometimes, it's randomly in the middle of the night.🤷♀️ I always say, "If you have any problems or questions, please contact me. The one thing I can't do is read your mind if you are stuck." And I really mean this, but I also love to hear about their latest wins or when they send me a photo of their dog. When people come to me for support, the troublesome behaviour has sometimes been going on for a while, and it can cause a lot of stress. As much as I love working with dogs, I enjoy supporting the human end of the lead just as much. People share some intense feelings with me when they talk about their dog's behaviour and how it is affecting both of them. And if there are possible medical conditions, I am always ready to support them however I can. Every now and then, I'll send a 'just checking in' email to my current clients to see how they are progressing with their training. Nothing warms my heart more than receiving a reply saying how great things are going, just like the one below. These emails make my day and put the biggest smile on my face. Knowing I have helped someone and their dog is the best part of my job, and hearing how Tellington TTouch is a part of this is all the more magical. Properly used, the dog crate is a marvelous training and management tool. Improperly used, it can be a disaster. Overcrating, traumatic, or stimulating experiences while crated, improper introduction to the crate, and isolation or separation anxieties are the primary causes of crating disasters. If your dog is not a fan of the crate you've provided for him, and assuming he can't be trusted home alone uncrated, here are some things you can do regarding his dog crate anxiety: 1. Find confinement alternatives Every time your crate-hating dog has a bad experience in a crate, it increases his stress and anxiety and makes it harder to modify his crate aversion. Your dog may tolerate an exercise pen, a chain-link kennel set up in your garage, or even a room of his own. 2. Teach him to love his crate. Utilize a combination of counter-conditioning (changing his association with the crate from negative to positive) and operant conditioning/shaping (positively reinforcing him for gradually moving closer to, and eventually into, the crate) to convince him to go into his crate voluntarily. Then, very gradually, work your way up to closing the door with your dog inside, and eventually moving longer and longer distances away from your crated dog for longer and longer periods of time. Note: If your dog has a separation/anxiety issue, you must address and modify that behavior before crate-training will work. If you feel it is overwhelming to crate train your dog on your own, call us so we can help you! It could be a matter of not understanding the behaviour or not knowing how to correct it. 🐾Changing my expectations🐾 When I first got Otis, I had this picture in my head of us having carefree adventures together. The reality was quite different. Otis would bark and lunge at other dogs and when things got really bad Otis would redirect his frustration back onto me. This meant that walks often resulted in me feeling embarrassed, frustrated, and sometimes defeated. I quickly realised that this wasn’t just a phase but a long-term commitment to training, patience, and understanding. Managing a reactive dog means adjusting your expectations. This is realisation helped me to overcome the disappointment that came from every walk. I was not failing Otis and Otis was not failing me. I just had to figure out the difference between what I wanted from Otis and what Otis required in order to have his needs met. Some of the ways I have adjusted my expectations are; 🐾 Understanding having a reactive dog, that Otis is not an everywhere at all times dog. While I would love for him to be included in everything it’s not fair on him to be overwhelmed the whole time and it’s not fair on me to miss out. 🐾 Taking Otis out for a walk isn’t one to relax and clear your mind. It’s quite the opposite as it means that I am constantly vigilant when out with Otis. Every walk is a training session. I’m always on the lookout for triggers and ready to manage Otis’ reactions. It’s mentally exhausting but necessary. 🐾 Understanding that training isn’t just a few weeks and Otis isn’t reactive anymore. Training is ongoing We’ve spent countless hours with trainers, reading up on dog behavior, and practicing techniques. Progress is slow and sometimes feels like it’s nonexistent, but those small victories keep us going. 🐾The social pressure you can face can be a lot. As a chronic people pleaser learning to advocate for Otis was a big adjustment. It can be disheartening when other dog owners don’t understand your dog’s behavior. Ignore the judgment and focus on what’s best for your dog. Despite how difficult having a reactive dog can be, learning to change my expectations has helped strengthen my understanding of Otis 🧡 If you on a similar path, just know you aren’t alone. 🧡
